Engage Now Africa (ENA), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has graduated 54 participants who underwent adult literacy programme at Ahiagbakope, Ehi- Horme, Kuli and Adzorti all in the Ketu North District of the Volta Region with a call on stakeholders, government and other NGOs to support the initiative.

In an interview with Cecilia Amankwah, Country Director of ENA, she said the international NGO was creating impact in African countries including Ethiopia, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Ghana.

Madam Amankwah explained that ENA’s mission was to heal, rescue and uplift individuals from poverty with the belief that poverty could never be fought by just one person which explained the categorisation of the organisation’s operations  into various areas such as providing potable water to communities, education and adult literacy to help the uneducated  read and write and also do simple Mathematics, medical services, microcredit, eradication of modern slavery among others to help eradicate poverty among these African countries.

The Country Director touched on the adult literacy programme saying, it has been successful as it kept bringing life to the lifeless and hope to the hopeless by equipping them with skills that they could use to be able to stand on their own.

She therefore encouraged the beneficiaries to take their lessons seriously and put them into practice to benefit them and mankind.

Chief of Kuli, Torgbui Avorkli V who chaired the event, underscored the need for everyone to go to school saying, “it’s good to promote our local dialect but u can’t travel outside the country and be speaking your local dialect again that’s why it’s very important for both children and adults to attend school to be able to improve their lives in various ways.”

He thanked the NGO for their support to the community and pleaded with the participants to make good use of all that they had learnt.

A representative from the Non-Formal Education Department, Dzidodo Agozie said in the olden days, it was very difficult for people to go to school but times have changed and for that matter, the uneducated should take it upon themselves to undergo the adult literacy programme without feeling shy because it would help them to build their self confidence which can take them to higher levels.

Skills Development Instructor at ENA, Hannah Appiah disclosed that she spent about 6 days in training the participants on how to make batic tye and dye, liquid soap, hair pomade and shampoo as part of activities the NGO has put in place to improve the lives of its beneficiaries.

According to Madam Appiah, she realised that most of the beneficiaries were prepared to learn and achieve something useful to the benefit of their households.

Some beneficiaries who spoke to Voltaonlinegh.com, expressed their excitement about the initiative and thanked ENA for making it possible for them to be trained to become self reliant.
