Edward Kpodo (right)

It was an exciting week for Volta players over the weekend. Player performances have been outstandingly in the domestic league. There was however some level of inactivity from the Division one players. One debut was marked for a new club while others chalked new triumph. As a Writer/Sports Journalist from the region, I seek to Follow, Monitor and Expose their exploits to the world. This week, our featured players are Edward kpodo, David Ayi Akwetey and Nii Armah Okai.

Lasted a year with Ulisses, he returned to Berekum Chelsea in June 2015 but did not feature for the club as they failed to receive his International Transfer Certificate from Ulisses until December 2015. In February 2016, Kpodo moved back to Armenia, signing a one-year contract with Gandzasar Kapan. After a year stint, Shirak Gyumri snapped the signature of the stalwart defender to help their quest within the season. His ability to marshal the defense was so much visible and it wasn’t surprising when top ranked team Banants approached. He was part of Berekum Chelsea CAF Champions League squad that made it to the group stages in the continental tourney. He was also a winner of the Ghana premier league with Berekum Chelsea. He also played for the national.

The MATS Park became a fortress for Mighty Jets in their latest attempt to fall Accra Young Wise. The Jets put a goal pass their visitors as they tried to wrestle their season back to good ways. The result means they are 4 points away from the drop zone and will seek to escape with more wining feats. Meanwhile, Accra Young Wise places 5th with 19 points on the table.

The Legon Park witnessed a barren game between home team Nania FC and regional brothers Sporting Mirren. Nania are just a point away from the relegation zone and are now in dire need of points if there are to survive the league. Public Hearing on Keta Delta Block Begins Monday

0
File photo

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold Public Hearing beginning Monday, June 4 to Friday, 8th June, 2018 in four municipal and district assemblies in the Keta Delta Block.

The 5-day Public Hearing which is in accordance with the Environmental Assessment Regulations 1991, LI 1652 (Regulation 17) will elicit concerns and expectations from citizens of Ketu South, Keta, South Tongu, all in the Volta Region, and Ada East District Assembly in the Greater Accra Region on the proposed onshore oil exploration.

The Hearing will be held at the respective district assembly halls except for Ada East (at St. Peter Claver Catholic Church, Ada-Foah) from 9:00am each day. A final session will be organised for civil society organisations, media, society groups, NGOs and the general public at Keta ICT Centre.

The basin stretching five constituencies was awarded to an oil firm, Swiss African Oil Company in 2016, to carry out onshore exploration for the hydrocarbon, which is believed to be in large deposit in the area.

The Keta Basin

But even before the company commences exploration, there had been concerns from a section of the Ghanaian public warning that such a venture could endanger the environment and lives of the inhabitants as the exploration would be done on land unlike the offshore.

Recently, a group, Keta Municipal Vegetable Farmers and Marketers Association took to the streets of Anloga in the Municipality to oppose the use of the 3,000-square- kilometer-basin for the planned onshore exploration activities which they feared would be unfavourable to them.

With inscriptions such as ‘Keta Basin was designed by God for Shrimp farming,’ ‘Oil Exploration will destroy our fragile ecosystem,’ No Niger Delta Militancy in Anloland,’ among others, they sought to relate the yet-to-happen Keta Delta to Nigeria’s Niger Delta situation where crude oil exploration and drilling activities by Shell company adversely affected the inhabitants.

Meanwhile, PenPlusBytes, an NGO that has done extensive media training in oil and gas in collaboration with voltaonlinegh.com will provide digital coverage of the hearing. The general public are encouraged to follow Facebook and twitter handles @penplusbytes @oilgasghana @voltaonlinegh with the hashtag, #ketaoil to contribute to the discussions.

GHA Begins Processes to Repair Damaged Portions of Sogakofe Bridge

0
Sogakope Bridge

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has commenced procurement processes to repair damaged portions of the Lower Volta Bridge, Sogakofe in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.

The Authority said it had begun the procurement processes in April this year and had submitted bids for the repair work on the Bridge on May 17, 2018.

This came to light when a delegation from the GHA led by the Director of Bridges, Mr Yakubu Koray on Friday, met with a cross section of concerned Tongu citizens at the District Assembly Hall, Sogakofe. The delegation listened to the concerns and suggestions of the people with regards to fixing the bridge.

Participants at the meeting

Mr. Koray enumerated the Authority’s progress on efforts to have the bridge fixed. He disclosed that a team from the Authority will on Monday, June 4 conduct bid evaluation leading to the selection of a contractor for the repair works on the bridge.

He appealed to the citizens to be patient with the Authority, explaining that all the materials needed in repairing the bridge would have to be imported into the country, thus, it will take the selected contractor about three months to start work on the Bridge. He added that work will however be completed within a month once it starts.

Discussions to fix the damaged portions of the Lower Volta Bridge, the Longest in Ghana had become necessary after an accident occurred on the bridge Thursday evening claiming the life of a 20-year old Bestway Mortor, injuring three others.

The accident happened when one motorist tried to swerve a pothole and collided with another rider coming from the opposite direction who also tried to overtake.

Appeal Court Judge Cautions Judicial Staff to Observe Official Hours

0

A Justice of the Court of Appeal, His Lordship Justice N.C.A. Agbevor has cautioned staff of district courts against abandoning their duties for private gains and asked that they rather comply with legitimate hours for court activities which is from 8:30am to 4:00pm.

He described situations where courtrooms are left empty without judicial staff during official hours, as heartbreaking and called on the staff to eschew indiscipline behaviours.

“Some staff go to work at 10:00am because they say there are no cases. I have inaugurated about 5 District Courts in this region but have noted that after the inauguration some places become virtually empty which I believe would not be the case here”.

His Lordship Justice Agbevor gave the caution at a ceremony to inaugurate a district court at Ve-Golokuati in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region.

The district court being inaugurated

According to him, government has put in place measures to ensure that the Judiciary lives up to standard and policies are being embarked on to hold judicial staff accountable for their actions.

He said the Judiciary cannot work against the ideas of the ruling government, neither would they oppose the legislations of the Assemblies, thus, he entreated District Chief Executives, Chiefs and people to ensure that issues of indiscipline among judicial workers are quickly brought to the appropriate authorities for rectification.

Justice Agbevor disclosed that Afadzato South District Court exists to coordinate and work hand in hand with other institutions in the District to ensure peace and development.

He therefore, asked the people to corporate with the staff towards achieving a common goal of strengthening the peaceful co-existence among the citizenry and appealed to them not to interfere in the process of justice delivery since that will hinder the peaceful environment needed to work.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa underscored the existence of a court system in any society in advancing the true course of justice.

“There is the need for courts to be established closer to the people to create the opportunity for them to seek redress on alleged infractions against the constitution or the laws of the State.”

He called on the people of the district to resort to legal means (the court) for resolution of their conflicts.

The District Chief Executive for the area, Lawyer Wisdom Seneadza said the presence of the Court in the District was a major relief to the people since they will no longer have to seek the services of a court outside the District.

He expressed optimism that the presence of the district court will relieve the District Police Service of the financial burden of having to persecute offenders of the law on behalf of the Attorney General outside the district and as well help distinguish between cases that can be adjudicated at traditional customary courts which was not the case in the absence of a court.
