BY: Daniel Orlando| VoltaOnline

The stage is set for a fiercely contested executive election in the Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), with the final list of qualified candidates now out and elections slated for Monday, June 30, 2025.

Lambert Kofi Atsivor, a media and communication practitioner, Managing Editor of VoltaOnline News portal, and a staff of Ho Technical University’s Public Affairs Directorate, is poised to sail through to the post of Regional Secretary unopposed.

With a proven track record as GJA Regional Administrator since 2019, Mr. Atsivor has garnered peer respect and recognition for his dedication to enhancing the Association’s administrative capabilities and fostering professional growth in the region.

The Chairperson position, however, promises to be a closely contested affair, with incumbent Agbaxode Emmanuel, Chief Reporter at the Ghana News Agency (GNA), going head-to-head with Dr. Harrison Kofi Belley, a Communication Lecturer at Ho Technical University.

For the Vice Chairperson position, Ivy Setordjie of the Multimedia Group awaits her fate of going unopposed or not, as the position has been reopened for nominations following the withdrawal of a second candidate.

The Treasurer position is also set for a keen contest, with incumbent Kpodo Ewoenam of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) locking horns with Nutsukpoe King Freeman of GBC-Volta Star Radio.

About 50 eligible journalists and media practitioners are expected to cast their ballots in the regional elections, making every vote crucial in determining the leadership of the Volta Regional branch of the GJA.

At the national level, 13 candidates have been cleared to contest various positions. Some of the key positions up for grabs include:

President: Albert Kwabena Dwumfour faces stiff competition from Charles Yao Mawusi, a media trainer and consultant. Vice President: Rebecca Ekpe takes on Mary Tawiah Mensah, Foreign Editor at Daily Graphic and a former GJA PRO.

General Secretary: Dominic Hlordzi vies for promotion against Akwasi Agyeman of Adom FM. Organising Secretary: Maxwell Kudekor faces off against Suleiman Mustapha, Acting Editor of Graphic Business. Public Affairs: Abagali Ceasar seeks to redeem herself against Zadok Kwame Gyesi, a former journalist with Graphic Online. Treasurer: Bertha Badu-Agyei of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) goes up against Theodora Amedetor of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

The GJA Elections Committee has scheduled balloting for Friday, June 13, 2025, across the 16 regions, including the Volta Region. This will determine the positions of candidates on the ballot paper. The elections are expected to be keenly contested, with journalists across the country exercising their franchise to shape the future leadership of the Association.

In a statement, the GJA Elections Committee has assured stakeholders of its commitment to transparency, fairness, and adherence to constitutional processes. The Committee also commends the role of petitioners in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
