We’ve Met BoG’s Minimum Capital Requirement-Agave Rural Bank

0

By: Tabitha Kugbonu | Voltaonlinegh |

The management of Agave Rural Bank in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region has debunked rumours that it failed to meet Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) minimum capital requirement saying, that could not have been the case.

The rumours in the area suggesting that the Agave Rural Bank could not meet BOG’s minimum capital requirement, thus, creating fear among some customers of the bank, followed a notice issued on August 19 by the Central Bank reminding rural/community banks to meet their minimum capital requirement by 2020 or face sanctions.

The directive was further to Bank of Ghana notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2015/08 dated July 3, 2015 which announced the revision of minimum capital for rural/community banks and microfinance institutions to GH¢1 million to be complied with by December 31, 2017, and GH¢2 million to be complied with by June 30, 2018, respectively.

But the Director of Agave Rural Bank, John Aheto who spoke to Voltaonlinegh on the issue called on customers of the bank and the general public to disregard such claims because there was no truth in them.

Mr. Aheto assured that the bank met the requirement since 2016 and beyond because in 2016, their capital statement according to Auditor’s Financial Statement, was GH¢1,118,708 while in 2017, their Auditor’s Financial Statement was GH¢1,467,000.

He said “on August 17, 2019, we had our Annual General Meeting discussing Auditor’s Financial Statement and over 500 Stakeholders were present at the meeting.

He added that “during the meeting, our minimum capital requirement increased to GH¢1.5 million indicating that, Agave Rural Bank is eligible to work with its shareholders in the rural center” and therefore called on customers especially, not give such rumours their attention.

Ho Water Crisis and Sanitation Concerns

0

By: Yvonne Elikplim Harlley-Kanyi |

Water is undoubtedly a mandatory for life, its scarcity kills thousands of people yearly and continues to threaten the health of humans the world over.

The Ho municipality in the Volta Region is faced with that “Save Our Souls” situation with periodic shortage of water in the valley city.

The Volta Regional Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) gave the signal years ago when it started rationing water for the ever growing population. Occasionally, the rationing gets serious with residents combing the municipality for water.

Dangers of Broken Transmission Line

But reports of the Company’s broken transmission lines for, which reason the pipes were shut for over two weeks continue to haunt many with health worries.

The lack of the commodity is pushing residents to visit cesspits in uncompleted buildings, dug outs and abandoned streams in the municipality for water.

Just as years past, the streams came alive. Tordze, Xadome, Ahorlor and Agblenudome, the only surviving streams in the Volta Regional capital are welcoming hundreds of people who throng their banks.

However, the adorable free flowing streams providing refreshing ecosystem are highly polluted and arguably unsafe for human consumption without treatment.

The World Health Organisation defines improved drinking water sources as sources that are protected from outside contamination, particularly from contamination with fecal matter by nature of its construction or active intervention.

Unsafe water is linked to a large number of diseases transmitted by viruses and bacteria–from hepatitis A and B to Typhoid fever and epidemic cholera.

Experts say nutritional status is compromised where people are exposed to high levels of infection due to unsafe and insufficient water supply.  Malnutrition levels are worsened by increase in parasitic infestations due to unsafe drinking water and poor sanitation.

A major pollutant of the streams is liquid waste from operators of tie and dye. They discharge waste chemicals used in the production of tie and dye into the streams, which changes the colour of the streams and release pungent smells.

Though effects of the chemicals in the streams are yet to be known, Agriculture Extension experts say the land area where the liquid waste is discharged cannot support plant growth.

Farmers also depend on these streams for water to mix pesticides. Sadly, some of them fetch the water with agrochemical containers polluting the streams with particles of the chemicals.

But perhaps the commonest mode of pollution is by defecating in and around the streams. Many houses are without household toilets in the regional capital. Therefore, streams and forests are notable places some people who do not have toilet in their homes frequent for nature’s call.

For instance, the Kabakaba Hill overlooking the town is said to have been turned into a “mass toilet” for about 80 per cent of 700 people in the Bake-Gblefe Electoral area who do not have household toilets and are not prepared to use public toilets.

Apart from the forest, teens and children reportedly defecate in nearby bushes close to their houses, with the fecal matter washed by rain water into homes and streams. No wonder the municipality continues to record low marks in open defecation with only 6 out of the 112 targeted communities being declared Open Defecation Free since 2012.

Unfortunately, water shortages usually lead to locking of public toilets, further promoting open defecation, with some defecating in polythene bags and throwing them into streams.

Checks indicate that some 192,969 residents of Ho are at risk of drinking polluted water through their taps due to frequent burst of water pipes and many more through the streams.

A major concern is how food vendors get potable water to prepare food for the public. School children most of whom take both breakfast and lunch at school are exposed to unhygienic food and unsafe water during such periods. The tendency of these children not washing their hands after visiting the toilet is high because the taps are not flowing in the schools.

Davi Mansa, a food vendor said she could not help but travel 22 kilometers to River Tordze near Kpetoe (Agotime-Ziope District) to fetch water to cook.

She admitted the water is not hygienic but encouraged herself that the “heat will kill all the germs in it.”

Davi Mansa said that was the only way she could keep her business going and also be able to cater for her four children, two of whom are in tertiary institutions.

Her story perhaps is not different from Amanor (Ama’s Mother) who sells “aliha” (corn drink). She lamented the consistent water shortage in the municipality but refused to say from where she continued to get water for her aliha. Amanor’s case is quite worrying because aliha is taken chilled.

Bad enough, the GWCL says repair works on the broken pipeline will take at least, four months indicating that woes of residents are far from over, something against the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 6, which calls for clean water and sanitation for all people- “ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”

The norm now is for people to go to the streams to defecate and bath at dawn while others follow later to fetch the same water in the morning, the effect? Your guess is as good as mine.

Visits to some health facilities in the municipality show that doctors are unable to perform surgeries because there is no water to help in their operations. The situation puts health workers at risk as they need to wash their hands with soap and water after every task- undeniably sanitisers are not 100 per cent reliable. Patients on admission are also unable to use the washrooms when they are pressed.

But nowhere cool. The streets are not spared the stench emanating from gutters playing hosts to refuse, liquid and solid wastes including feces, posing major challenges to efforts of the Ho Municipal Assembly branding of the municipality as the “Oxygen City” of Ghana.

GJA’S Intervention

This is why I commend the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Volta chapter’s resolve to wage war on the poor sanitation situation in the region with focus on the Ho Municipality, the eye of the region.

The Association under the distinguished leadership of A.B. Kafui Kanyi chose the theme, “Environmental Cleanliness; Media as Vanguards, Don’t Drop That Litter” for its 3rd Media Awards.

Journalists in Volta and Oti are expected to look out for insanitary conditions in the regions and alert authorities for redress.

The campaign seeks to among others, get Ho which was once celebrated as the cleanest city in the country back to its glory.

What Can We Do?

It is therefore imperative that the campaign against open defecation is stepped up. Vigorous triggering of communities is very necessary to control the situation with assembly members encouraged to get involved and own the campaign.

Planting of trees should be encouraged, especially along the streams to preserve them and people discouraged from defecating and dumping refuse in them.

Ho is on sanitation time bomb and need I say proper water preservation and judicious use of water is key to avoid the use of unsafe water with its attendant health threats.

Health inspections of public establishments such as schools and hospitals and regular supply of water to them by the GWCL during this period of water crisis is vital.

By: Ewoenam Kpodo | Voltaonlinegh |

The National Readers Association, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in education has commissioned a library at Avatime EP Basic School in the Ho West District of the Volta Region as part of their One District-One Library (1D1L) project.

The library stocked with over 1,500 reading books for both kids and adults was to encourage both the young and the old to read.

The Coordinator, Confucius Caradoc Bedzina who commissioned the library on Monday, August 19, advised the pupils to take reading serious as it formed the basis of their intellectual capacity.

Mr. Bedzina encouraged the pupils to read at least one book in a week explaining that reading was important because “it develops our thoughts, gives us endless knowledge and lessons while keeping our minds active.”

“The importance of reading books to help us learn and understand cannot be underestimated, not to mention the vocabulary and thinking skills we develop.”

He further said, “in the world today where information is abundant, reading books is one of the best ways to be informed” and observed  that  aside reading being a simple fun, it could be helpful to their body and mind without them realising and wanted that they make it a habit.

A teacher in the school, Precious Yao Akagbor on behalf of the school, expressed gratitude and assured that the library would be put to good use and that pupils would be engaged in reading always.

On his side, Appiah Ferguson, the community representative also thanked the donors and requested that the school be provided with more support like computers and learning materials to enhance teaching and learning.

Akufo-Addo’s Gov’t will be Remembered for Keta Port, Eastern Corridor Rd-Awadada

By: Ewoenam Kpodo | Voltaonlinegh |

Awadada of Anlo State, Torgbui Agbesi Awusu II has said the current government would remain in the hearts of the people of Anlo, Volta Region and Ghana should it succeed in developing a port at Keta and constructing the Eastern Corridor Road to connect the Volta Region to the north of the country.

Torgbui Agbesi Awusu II who recalled the past glories of Keta claiming it had a sort of a port even before the construction of Tema Harbour, making the area the preferred destination for national and international trade, said it would be appreciated if the current government could fulfill its promise to construct a port at Keta.

He observed that developing the port and constructing the Eastern Corridor Road would open up the region to national and international businesses, thus, offering whole lots of opportunities for the region and its people and should that happen, “nobody will forget this government.”

The Awadada made this known when the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa and the Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Godwin Edudzi Effah led a powerful delegation from Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) including the Director-General, Michael Luguje to pay a courtesy call on the Awoamefia, Torgbui Sri III at Anloga.

The separate visits to Dufia of Kedzi (where the port is to be sited), Torgbui Joachim Accolatse V and the Awoamefia on Thursday were to officially introduce the Director of Keta Port to them.

The Awoamefia, Torgbui Sri III was grateful to the government for wanting to lift the standard of living of the people through such development projects.

Torgbui Sri said the plan for a port at Keta had been on the drawing board for long saying, “little did we know that the dream of building a harbor at Keta will materialise and lo and behold, it has come to be true.”

He expected that “the government will in no time, build the harbour for us” to provide jobs not just for the people of Anlo but the people of Ghana as a whole.

Board Chairman, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Peter Mac Manu who assured that processes were ongoing to soon get the port developed said “the “President himself has signed the executive instrument that demarcates the area” for the port.

Mr. Mac Manu justified the appointment of a director for the yet-to-exist port saying, adverts were placed for tender for feasibility studies for the port and 19 enthusiastic people, companies were shortlisted with the process ongoing emphasising, “you cannot be doing all these without designating focal person to be in charge and control of the process.”

He said following the headquartering of African Continental Free Trade Area, (AfCFTA) in Ghana, the Keta Port would benefit the people and the country facilitating trade within Africa and the world saying, “we know Keta, historically has been a major trading town and it’s the dream and vision of the President to reignite its former glory.”

Director, Keta Port, Dr. Alexander Yao Adusei urged everyone to see the port as Volta Region development project and not a New Patriotic Party (NPP) one encouraging all to join hands to develop it.

Dr. Adusei said just as the President, the GPHA was in a hurry to get the Keta Port project completed and called for prayers of the people to accelerate it development.

Akatsi North NDC: Rawlings ‘Boy’ Attacks Supporters of Opponent

Dr. Donald Agumenu

By: Abdul-Iddrisu Faisel | Voltaonlinegh |

A Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the Akatsi North Constituency of the Volta Region, Daniel Sakpaku Gadufia, has been physically assaulted on Tuesday, by staff Sergeant Yayra Azametsi of the Ghana Armed Forces, a security attaché of Dr. Donald Senanu Agumenu, an aspirant in the NDC Parliamentary primaries.

A press release issued by the party leadership in the constituency on Wednesday stated that the actions of Dr. Donald Agumenu (Rawling’s aide) and the military officer were threatening and could distort the peace and smooth running of the Parliamentary primaries.

“We are very displeased to announce to you that the actions of a special aide to Former President Jerry John Rawlings and some military officers he brought to the Akatsi North Constituency to distort the peace of the district/constituency”.

The press statement also gave accounts of how Dr. Agumenu traced and attacked the campaign team of his opponent, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Peter Nortsu-Kotoe while they were campaigning at one of the branches in the constituency.

“On Monday, 12th August, while the Member of Parliament for Akatsi North Constituency, Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe was on a campaign tour in Etekorpe, a community in the Metrikasa Electoral Area, Dr. Agumenu drove to the community with the military officers to disrupt the campaign activities of the MP, an aspirant in the upcoming Parliamentary Primaries slated for August 24th 2019.”

The MP’s campaign team was said to have responded swiftly to foil the attack on Monday.

Following Monday’s incident, Mr. Gadufia, a member of the Legetsi branch and a member of the MP’s campaign team was attacked by the military officer; who slapped the victim leaving his clothes in tatters.

The victim was later sent to the St. Anthony Catholic Hospital, Dzodze where he was treated and discharged.

In reaction, Dr. Donald Agumenu and his team denied the allegations describing the developments as very disturbing coming from a clique within the constituency executive who had decided to take sides in the constituency’s parliamentary contest.

According to Dr. Agumenu, “it is not my nature to apply violence in my bid to serve my people in Parliament. I do not have the power or right to use soldiers as alleged by the false statement issued by Dr. Richard Awudza. I will however not be distracted by these actions. Let us forge ahead in our quest to seek refreshing change for our constituency.”

The Akatsi North NDC Parliamentary primaries is being contested by three people, the MP, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, Dr. Donald Senanu Agumenu and Dr. Stephen Torkpo.

By: Cindy D.M Asamoah | Voltaonlinegh |

World Vision Ghana, Nkwanta Cluster in the Oti Region has organised a 6-day Annual Girls’ Vacation Camp aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy in the area.

The camp at Nkwanta which drew about 215 girls aged between 10-18 selected from 15 communities in the Kadjeibi Area Programme and 24 communities in the Nkwanta Area Programme from the region, took the girls through handicrafts including bead making, weaving and basketry.

They also learnt how to make liquid soap, shower gel, banana ice-cream and different kinds of pastries.

Nkwanta Cluster Manager of World Vision, Salomey Yeboah said the camp under the theme, “Empowering the Girl Child for Responsible Living”, was in order to discourage teenage pregnancy, peer influence, early marriage or child marriage as well as empower girls with employable skills among others in the municipality.

Mrs. Salomey disclosed that the World Vision intended to be organising the vacation camps for the girls to achieve desired results.

According to her, their vision was to ensure that every child had life in all its fullness, children  were educated on how to abstain from sex, take care of themselves as they go through physical, emotional and psychological changes during adolescence.

By the end of the training, according to the Project Officer for Education and Life Skills, World Vision Nkwanta, Kennedy Amponsah-Cheremeh, the girls would be able to take positive decisions in future and would be empowered for a responsible living.

Speaking with some of the girls at the camp, they thanked World Vision for giving them the opportunity to learn new things asking that more of such training should be organised for other adolescent girls in the municipality to protect them from pre-marital sexual activities.

They also pleaded with World Vision to extend the vacation camp to cover all girls in the country.
