Date for 2018 National Sports Festival has been fixed after a technical meeting held on Thursday, May 3, by federation reps and the National Sports Authority at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The revived annual event which sees all 10 regions battle in selected sporting disciplines comes off at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium from July 29, through to August 9.
This year’s event will also see additional sporting disciplines like U-15 boys’ soccer, scrabble, chess, hockey, and 2 more Para sports, making a total of 15, compared to last year’s 11.
The purpose of this event which is to help select national players for the various national teams was revived in September last year in Kumasi.
Disciplines competed for last year included Boxing, Taekwondo, Athletics, Handball, Tennis, Volleyball, Girls soccer, badminton, table tennis, 3 Para sports, and Netball with Greater Accra and Ashanti regions dominating at the Festival.
This year’s event is expected to be better in terms of organisation and competition.
Currently, Greater Accra remains the only region to have organised inter district sports festival (in April) to select athletes for the big event happening in Cape Coast.
The rest of the nine regions either, handpicked players or organised a day’s gala to select their athletes.
