Free Access to Journalism Profession Cause for Worry

Group Managing Editor of EIB Network, Eyram Bashan has expressed worry over the activities of some journalists in the country which seek to discredit other committed journalists and put into disrepute the profession.

Though she recognised the good works of committed and hardworking journalists in the country whose investigations have brought relief to people, solved age-long problems and exposed wrongs in society, she added, “we can do it better.”

According to her, there are those result-oriented journalists in the media. However, there are others who are there causing harm to the image of journalists and one gets to hear phrases such as “so-called journalists” among others and blamed that on free access to the profession by persons with little or no formal training in journalism.

The Group News Editor said currently, there are no restrictions as to who qualifies to be in the media as is the case when it comes to the fields of law, medicine, architecture, etc, where these professionals are trained and licensed to operate.

Madam Eyram Bashan was speaking on Joy News Prime at 7 last evening ahead of World Press Day today, May 3 and monitored by voltaonlinegh.com.

According to her, the media (airspace) is so critical to the development of every nation and it must take proper training of its workers to make the needed impact.

She said there are “numerous sub-standard journalism training schools in the country,” and contributing immensely to the problem.

On remuneration, Dr. Etse Sikanku, Communications Consultant agreed the economic situation in the country is not helping and called for the need for media personnel to be well paid to motivate them to do more.

Meanwhile, President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo has been speaking ahead of the commemoration  of this year’s World Press Freedom Day to be hosted by Ghana on the theme: “Keeping Power in check: Media, Justice and the rule of law”
