C’ttee for Volta’s Participation at Sports Festival Inaugurated

The National Sports Authority (NSA) in the Volta region has set up a nine (9) member ‘Working Committee’ after a meeting with the various sporting disciplines on Wednesday, May 23, 2018.

The meeting which was held at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) conference room was attended by Chairmen, Secretaries and Coaches of the various sports Associations in the region,  to deliberate on the region’s preparation and the participation in the upcoming National Sports Festival.

Present at the meeting was the Deputy Regional Minister, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Blagogee, who on behalf of the Regional Minister, promised Team Volta of the Region’s full support in their preparation and participation at the Sports Festival to be held in Cape Coast.

He stated that, they will provide Team Volta with track suits for the festival upon a request made by the new Regional Sports Director, Kwame Amponfi Jnr.

“As a teacher and speaking on behalf of an astute Entrepreneur who is keen in the success of all sectors in the region, including sports, we are ready to support team Volta to Cape Coast. You know I am a Sports enthusiast and would always want the best for the region. We’ll support you to the Festival through funds from the various MDA’s. We will also provide Team Volta with a track suit.”

The nine (9) member Committee who will be having their first meeting on Thursday, May 31 is to be chaired by the Regional Sports Director,  Kwame Amponfi Jnr.

It has former regional P.E Coordinator and Chairman of the Handball Association, Togbe Palmas Howusu, his successor and Netball Chairman, Bright B. Doste and Madam Doris Afari, Athletics Vice Chairperson and Chair of Women in Sports as members. Others are Boxing Chairman, Enam Foster Dagadu, Tennis Coach, James Buta-Buamah, a VRCC rep, Davis Nii Attuquaye Clottey, Media Rep, and NSA, Volta Accountant, Samuel Ahia Nartey.

The Working Committee has been tasked to solicit funds for equipment, food, transport, get sponsorships, and ensure a proper preparation of the various nucleus teams for the participation at the Sports festival.

The Regional Sports Director, Kwame Amponfi Jnr, who chaired the meeting, reechoed that good sports performance is about effective preparation and not magic, so Volta must prepare well.

“Doing Sports is all about meeting standards, so we must justify why we should be taken there to compete. I don’t believe in a large size but a quality team that can produce results. If we would go with 3 athletes and do well, it’s better than going with a full bus and eventually coming back with nothing. I hate failure and for that matter, we must go prepared.”

In that regard, the various Associations declared their status on whether they are prepared to go and others were also to be considered pending a justification to select a team. Out of them, Badminton and Wheelchair Basketball declared themselves not ready for this year’s Sports festival.

Team Volta’s performance at last year’s event held in Kumasi saw individual performances from Boxing (-49kg, Silver), and Tennis (Well behaved).  Handball won Bronze overall in both male and female categories while Taekwondo also won Bronze overall in the male category.

This year’s Sports Festival to be held in Cape Coast comes off from July 29 to August 9, 2018.
