The exercise which was in two phases had the first phase at Dzodze, the Ketu North capital.

Medical Doctor with the Foundation, Kafui Gbewonyo said the exercise was aimed at diagnosing the students and their parents and offering them free medication and in few cases, refer them to a medical facility for treatment.

He said the team is made up of close to 50 volunteers comprising doctors, pharmacists, nurses, healthcare assistants and other healthcare professionals.

Doctor Gbewonyo added that the exercise was also to touch lives of pupils of school going age.

According to him, the doctors as part of their benevolent act are on a three-week Ghana Medical Tour to three different regions in the country.

He said the exercise started last week in the Eastern Region town of Kibi, the President Nana Addo’s hometown where over 300 patients were screened and provided with free medication.

He said at Dzodze, the exercise saw over 500 partakers benefiting from the free medical exercise.

The Proprietress of the School, Lawrencia Mawutor Agbenyefia expressed her greatest appreciation to the team of doctors for the service saying, in this era of strange disease all over the world such activities were needed to keep the students and the community healthy.

Some of the participants commended the team for the exercise and asked them to make it a yearly event.

The occasion was graced by the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Yao Letsa.

Beach Soccer: Victory against Gt. Accra in Unity Cup finals wasn’t easy- Caesar

Volta Beach Soccer Team

Head Coach of Volta Beach Soccer Team, Julius Caesar Beckley has told TalksenseSports, “it wasn’t easy beating Greater Accra in the 2018 Beach Soccer Unity Cup.”

Team Volta defeated the defending champions 4-3 on penalties to lift the second edition of the Unity Cup at the Laboma Beach Arena, in La on Friday, May 25, 2018.

Being runners up in the first edition, Team Volta put in much effort to achieve their target of winning the cup through the group A stages, where they saw off teams like Central (2-0), and Eastern (5-1).

Greater Accra in the other group (B) had to also beat Western, 6-1 and managed a 3-2 penalty shootout victory against Ashanti after a 2-all regulation results.

Caesar, proud of his team’s performance, said the commitment to their target won the game for them.

Coach Caesar Beckley

“On a more serious note, winning the cup was our target before the competition begun. In the maiden edition, we were in the finals and lost to Greater Accra. They have quality players, most of whom are in the national team, the Black Sharks; they also have the national and assistant coaches. They are the defending champions as well as playing at home so it was very difficult but we put all our efforts into that game and it paid off. I feel so proud of myself and also proud of my players.”

This year’s Unity cup, dubbed the Sports Festival, which was played on the African Union Day, saw 2 new participating regions, Ashanti and Eastern.

The National Beach Soccer Super League which saw four exciting seasons some years back is hopeful to bounce back in late June in the Western Region.

Meanwhile, defending champions and 3-time winners, Sunset Sports Keta, will be participating in a tournament in Nigeria in June, to prepare for the league.

Volta, have had teams like Sunset Sports Keta, Havedzi Mighty Warriors, and Tegbi Youth who pulled out in the second round of the last edition of the league.

Use Ewe in your songs – Ambolley tells Stonebwoy

0
Gyedu Blay Ambolley

Veteran Ghanaian highlife artiste, Gyedu Blay Ambolley has urged respected Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy to make good use of his Ewe language in his songs, instead of writing songs in Jamaican Patois.

According to Ambolley, the move could help save local Ghanaian music from dilution and a takeover by foreign genres.

Speaking recently in media interview, the highlife musician insisted that young Ghanaian artistes must learn to write good music from their own local language and stop copying blindly from other foreign cultures.

“Stonebwoy is an Ewe boy, he has to use music from his tribe, Stonebwoy is singing more Jamaican Patois than his own local language,” Ambolley lamented.

Stonebwoy

The Ghanaian dancehall artiste recently made media headlines for being fluent in Patois that, Jamaicans were unable to differentiate whether he is one of them or a Ghanaian when he performed in that country.

However, Gyedu Blay Ambolley was disappointed Stonebwoy cannot boast of a single song in his mother tongue, Ewe.

He questioned why the artiste will leave Africa to follow Jamaicans, who have their culture.

“It’s the Jamaicans that came out with that, our brothers that were sent away to the other side of the world, they came with that Patois, it’s their identification, they took them away from Africa. Africa is the source. So why is it that you have to leave the source and follow the branch,” Ambolley expressed worry.

The celebrated musician added it is totally wrong for up and coming artiste to neglect their origins to follow foreign culture.

Put into Practice What You Have Learnt-Ablakwa

0

Member of parliament (MP) for North Tongu in the Volta Region, Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on some youth in his constituency to use the skills they have acquired to impact positively on their lives and that of others in their communities.

He made the call during a presentation of certificates to 52 young men and women who have undergone training in bee keeping and snail rearing on Sunday at Aveyime Battor.

Mr Ablakwa sponsored the 52 youth selected from all the six traditional areas within the North Tongu District to undergo bee keeping and snail rearing in Ho organised by Centre for Scientific and industrial Research (CSIR).

The intent was to help the vulnerable youth group in the constituency without the means to acquire skills to start off something on which to live on.

The MP assured the participants of his support if they put the opportunity they got into proper use to benefit themselves and others in the community. To him, all he needed to support the youth is a sign of seriousness trying to start something small based on the skills acquired.

“I will support them with capital so that they can really take off. I’m looking at creating more and more opportunities for our youth in the constituency and I find this partnership with CSIR very laudable and we’re going to continue to maintain our partnership so that we can empower our youth.”

Kpassa Chief Levies Residents to Construct District Hospital

0
Ubor Konja Tassan VI

The Paramount Chief of Kpassa Traditional Area, in the Nkwanta North District of the Volta Region, Ubor Konja Tassan VI, has levied residents in the area, Ghc5  each to finance the construction of a health facility.

The project estimated to cost Ghc 4 million, is a self help initiative  to save lives in the district, which is without a district hospital.

Residents of the area travel to neighbouring districts in the Volta and Northern Regions to access healthcare.

According to Obrempong Ba K. Owusu of Nkwanta based Beyond FM,  Ubor Konja Tassan disclosed that the project which is estimated to cost about 4 million Ghana cedis would also cover the construction of  medical quarters for a resident doctor posted to the district.

According to the Paramount Chief, it is nerve-wreckling to know that Nkwanta North attained a district status over decades but does not have a hospital for which thousands of residents travel long distances to Nkwanta South, Bimbila and other districts to seek medical care.

He added that several appeals have been made to successive governments but yielded no result.

Ubor Konja therefore appealed to the government to support the traditional area to construct a befitting district health facility to enhance healthcare delivery to residents in the district.

The Assemblyman for Kpassa West Electoral Area, Mr Tadin Noah and some residents had already made their contributions as a demonstration of their support towards the construction of the hospital.

Telecommunication Gap in Nkwanta South Affecting Food Marketing

0

The absence of mobile telephone network at Chaiso, a heavy agricultural, mountain bottom community in the Nkwanta-South Municipality of the Volta Region is drawing back fluid agro-business linkages.

Trading in tonnes of cassava, cocoyam, plantain, banana, maize, palm products, including akpeteshie, among others, is sluggish and unenticing.

Speaking with voltaonlinegh.com, Mr John Paul Anewaba, former Assembly Member for Chaiso observed that fluid communications between the food producers and marketers should be of mutual benefit to both sides.

He said apart from the setback to agro-business, the telecommunication gap has also made the area unsafe as armed-robbers prowl around occasionally knowing that hints would not get to the police easily.

Mr Anewaba said this security situation is a disincentive to food marketing in the area.

According to him, one tower should be adequate to join Chaiso and surrounding communities such as Kpeve, Duflomkpa, Ahondwo, Salifu and Bontibor to the rest of Ghana.

Mr Anewaba appealed to the Ministry of Communications to actualize the special arrangements with the telcos that requires the state to bridge the gaps in the telephone networks.

To him, the situation is also affecting the management of medical emergencies in the community where people sometimes have to scale trees, mounds, just to reach help on phone, describing it as pathetic.

The Nkwanta area, with varied vegetation zone, is considered a potential food basket of Ghana.

The Volta Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association in conjunction with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and the Nkwanta Municipal Assembly marked the 2018 International Press Freedom Day, celebrated every May 3, at Nkwanta.

The programme was part of the Volta-GJA’s running collaboration with Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) Volta-Eastern Chapter to promote business development in the region.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has inaugurated sub-committees to herald the party’s unity walk slated for Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the Ketu South Municipal capital, Aflao in the Volta Region.

A communique signed by the Regional Secretary of the Party, Simon Amegashie-Viglo divided the 35–member Committee into five Sub-Committees to see to the successful organization of the walk.

The Sub-Committees are: Grounds Committee with Henry Ametefee as Chairman, Publicity Committee, Fifi Kwetey (MP for Ketu South), Chairman, Protocol Committee, Stan Dogbe – Chairman, Transport and Logistics Committee, John Kwadwo Gyapong (Regional Chairman), Chairman and Finance Committee with Emmanuel Bedzrah (MPs Caucus Chairman) as Chairman.

Several hundreds of supporters of the party are expected to converge at the border town clad in party paraphernalia for the Volta Region NDC unity walk.

The walk has been a key feature of the NDC’s plan to reunite members of the party who were left divided, trading blames after suffering a heavy defeat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 elections.

The expected massive reception at Aflao, the stronghold of the NDC will boost the morale of the party ahead of their bid to recapture power in 2020.
