RAG-Volta Holds First Ever Ladies Refresher Course

0

The Referees Association of Ghana (RAG), Volta successfully ended a day’s refresher course for all female referees in the region.

The course which came off at the RAG-Volta Regional Office at the Ho Sports Stadium on Saturday, May 26 was to equip the female referees with the needed skills which would enhance their officiating in the male dominated profession.

The course was mainly to give the ladies full attention and emphasized on their challenges as their male counterparts mostly overshadow them in such courses when organised generally.

Vice Chairperson of the Referees Association of Ghana-Volta Region, and once FIFA Referee, Innocentia Agbavitor in her opening speech highlighted the importance of the course to the participants, believing it would serve the purpose for which it was executed.
It is said that knowledge is power, hence the decision to organise this course to polish talents and build the confidence level of our ladies before the second round of the women’s league.

This is supposed to be a two or three-day course but due to limited time given, we would use todays exercise as an experiment and at the end, I believe technical and physical capacities of both facilitators and participants would be enhanced, she added.

The first ever refresher course for the female referees saw 15 participants from across the region with 3 facilitators. Class one referees Solomon Mordey and Samuel Sukah who are the Regional Deputy Technical Instructor and Fitness Instructor respectively, took the ladies through the revised FIFA rules and scenarios with support from Central Zone, Ho Fitness Instructor and FIFA referee, Delight Alorbu.

There was time for the referees to also test their fitness level on the field as they prepare for the second round of the National Womens League and the start of the Regional Division Two League.

It is believed that female referees in the country need consistent refresher courses to improve on the level of officiating in Women Football in the country and also help them match up with or even do better than their male counterparts in order to gain promotion to FIFA level.

Football: Midweek Performances of Some Volta Region Players

0
Asante Kotoko's Richard Senanu

It was a thrilling week for Volta players in the Elite Division in Ghana. Player transfer was visible with some making their debut. As a Writer/Sports Journalist from the region, I seek to follow, monitor and expose their exploits to the world. This week, our featured players are Richard Senanu, Godfred Kwadwo Asamoah and Solomon Okudzeto.

Godfred Kwadwo Asamoah is a midfielder who operates mainly through the wings. The budding talent was in high demand last season after an explosive campaign with Kpando Hearts of Lions. Dreams FC confirmed his capture from Heart of Lions after lengthy negotiations. The 21-year-old is believed to have concluded a three-year deal for a transfer fee around GHc150,000. His performance in the Ghana premier league earned him several ‘man of the match’ awards.

Kwadwo Asamoah

Richard Senanu is a midfielder who currently plays for Kumasi Asante Kotoko. He made the move from Uncle T Fc in the second transfer window and had featured for the porcupine warriors immediately. Known for his ability to effectively marshal the defensive and offensive role gives him an added advantage over other squad members. Richard hails from Aflao and had previously played for Aflao Diamond Babies, Ketu United and Kpando Hearts of Lions all in the region. He is a very discipline player, hardly talks or socialize and a former student of three Town Senior High school, Denu. He was the former captain of Uncle T Fc.

He featured in the midweek fixtures for his new side in an astonishing fashion and lasted the entire duration of the game. Kotoko won the game 2-0 against Elmina Sharks. Kumasi Asante Kotoko young striker Mawuli Osei’s future with the porcupine warriors is still uncertain as various media outlets suggests the player has failed to impress Kotoko after his signature was acquired.

Solomon Okudzeto

Solomon Okudzeto is a striker who currently plays for Ebusua Dwarfs, known for his artistry and vision in front of goal makes him a foe to may opposing defense. His famous display against Bechem United in their 1-1 draw in week 5 Of the Premier league earned him the Nasco Most Valuable Player of the match. For many, he is a talent that may soon end Ghana’s search for a potent striker. He has featured for Dwarfs in 12 matches this season with 3 goals.

Prosper Dayegbe Ahiabu of WAFA was named in the starting lineup for West Africa Football Academy as they record a 0-0 drawn game with the Phobians at the Baba Yara stadium. Prosper who currently returned from the national U20 camp lasted the entire duration of the game.

Prosper Atsu Avor starred for Liberty Professionals in their 2-1 win away to Bechem United. The right back has featured in all premier league matches for Liberty this season and yet to score a goal. The right back enforcer joined Liberty from Kpando Hearts of Lions.

Prosper Gbeku was started for home team Wa All Stars as they lost to Inter Allies 1-0.

Solomon Gyesi Okudzeto was names in the starting 11 for Ebusua Dwarfs and lasted the entire 90 minutes. There was Justus Torsutsey in the lineup but started from the bench in Dwarfs 2-0 win over Ash Gold.

James Akaminko and Roland Amouzou Hermann Kossivi were however in action for the loosing team Ashanti Gold. He started the game and lasted full duration in their defeat to Dwarfs.

Goalkeeper Richard Attah kept the post for Elmina Shark in their 2-0 lost to Kumasi Asante Kotoko. He lasted full 90 minutes.

Wahab Ahadzi was in full flight for Berekum Chelsea in their 2-1 win at home against Medeama Sporting Club. Wahab played 90 minutes. Meanwhile Asiwome Joy Fumador was not with the 18 man Berekum Chelsea squad.

Joseph Esso was named in a strong Accra Hearts OF Oak staring line up against WAFA at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. He lasted 90 minutes of the game. Bakai Bless Selase however was on the bench and watch as Hearts drew parity.

Ivan Kpeglo started from the bench for Inter Allies as they beat former league champions Wa all Stars 1-0 at the Wa Park.

These are the players I kept my eyes on; help me discover other guys from the region making it big in football.

C’ttee for Volta’s Participation at Sports Festival Inaugurated

0

The National Sports Authority (NSA) in the Volta region has set up a nine (9) member ‘Working Committee’ after a meeting with the various sporting disciplines on Wednesday, May 23, 2018.

The meeting which was held at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) conference room was attended by Chairmen, Secretaries and Coaches of the various sports Associations in the region,  to deliberate on the region’s preparation and the participation in the upcoming National Sports Festival.

Present at the meeting was the Deputy Regional Minister, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Blagogee, who on behalf of the Regional Minister, promised Team Volta of the Region’s full support in their preparation and participation at the Sports Festival to be held in Cape Coast.

He stated that, they will provide Team Volta with track suits for the festival upon a request made by the new Regional Sports Director, Kwame Amponfi Jnr.

“As a teacher and speaking on behalf of an astute Entrepreneur who is keen in the success of all sectors in the region, including sports, we are ready to support team Volta to Cape Coast. You know I am a Sports enthusiast and would always want the best for the region. We’ll support you to the Festival through funds from the various MDA’s. We will also provide Team Volta with a track suit.”

The nine (9) member Committee who will be having their first meeting on Thursday, May 31 is to be chaired by the Regional Sports Director,  Kwame Amponfi Jnr.

It has former regional P.E Coordinator and Chairman of the Handball Association, Togbe Palmas Howusu, his successor and Netball Chairman, Bright B. Doste and Madam Doris Afari, Athletics Vice Chairperson and Chair of Women in Sports as members. Others are Boxing Chairman, Enam Foster Dagadu, Tennis Coach, James Buta-Buamah, a VRCC rep, Davis Nii Attuquaye Clottey, Media Rep, and NSA, Volta Accountant, Samuel Ahia Nartey.

The Working Committee has been tasked to solicit funds for equipment, food, transport, get sponsorships, and ensure a proper preparation of the various nucleus teams for the participation at the Sports festival.

The Regional Sports Director, Kwame Amponfi Jnr, who chaired the meeting, reechoed that good sports performance is about effective preparation and not magic, so Volta must prepare well.

“Doing Sports is all about meeting standards, so we must justify why we should be taken there to compete. I don’t believe in a large size but a quality team that can produce results. If we would go with 3 athletes and do well, it’s better than going with a full bus and eventually coming back with nothing. I hate failure and for that matter, we must go prepared.”

In that regard, the various Associations declared their status on whether they are prepared to go and others were also to be considered pending a justification to select a team. Out of them, Badminton and Wheelchair Basketball declared themselves not ready for this year’s Sports festival.

Team Volta’s performance at last year’s event held in Kumasi saw individual performances from Boxing (-49kg, Silver), and Tennis (Well behaved).  Handball won Bronze overall in both male and female categories while Taekwondo also won Bronze overall in the male category.

This year’s Sports Festival to be held in Cape Coast comes off from July 29 to August 9, 2018.

Letsa, Amewu & five Others cited for Contempt of Court

0

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. John Peter Amewu, and five others have been dragged to the Ho High Court for contempt.

They are said to have flouted the orders of the court restraining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from holding the regional conference which elected new regional executives in April this year.

The others are the newly elected Regional Chairman of the party, Mr Kofi Makafui Woanya, former Acting Regional Chairman, Esther Edjeani, Chairman of the Vetting Committee, Bob Charles Agbontor, Volta Regional Director of Electoral Commission, Selormey Dogbe and the Hohoe Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Thomas Karkari.

Adjournment

The case which was called on Thursday at the court presided over by Justice Eric Baah, had to be adjourned to June 18 because not all the defendants had been served copies of the contempt notice.

The Ho High Court prior to the elections had placed an injunction on the conference following an application by a disqualified aspirant, George Kofi Boateng who was contesting for the chairmanship position.

Mr Kofi Boateng, a former Regional Secretary of the party was disqualified alongside three other aspirants by the vetting committee chaired by Bob Charles Agbontor in April.

The ex-parte motion was a move by Mr. Boateng to seek redress for what he described as an unfair disqualification from the contest.

However, despite having knowledge of the injunction, the respondents were said to have held the elections thereby exhibiting gross disrespect to the court for which the applicant wants the court to punish them.

Application to set aside injunction order

Meanwhile earlier in court, the party through its lawyer, Mr. Ernest Gaewu had moved an application to set aside the said interlocutory injunction on grounds that the order was made in error and without jurisdiction.

Mr. Gaewu had argued that the court order for the plaintiff to serve the NPP of an exparte motion for injunction together with the writ of summons and a hearing notice was not carried out as it was statutory demanded, and therefore that rendered the order of the court void.

According to him, the administrative officer at the regional office who was served a copy of the notice was not the right person to receive documents on behalf of the party.

However the lawyer Mr Atsu Agbakpe for the plaintiff argued that once there was proof of service on an appointed officer of the party at the regional level, it was a ‘good service ‘and therefore the court should dismiss the application.

LPG Operators call off nationwide Strike

0

The Ghana LPG Operators Association (GLiPGOA) has called off its nationwide strike, started three days ago in protest of the yet-to-be introduced gas cylinder re-circulation policy by government.

This follows an agreement reached by the association with government that the local industry will own and drive the cylinder re-circulation policy.

Mr Gabriel Kumi, Vice President of the LPG marketers association, said in a media interview, Wednesday evening that, “We’ve called off the strike because we had a meeting with the [Energy] Minister on Tuesday and we came up with some proposals which are quite acceptable.”

He added that, the decision to call off the strike was partly due to the fact that they do not want to overstretch consumers, who have borne the brunt of the industrial action, which has also crippled activities of commercial LPG users, especially taxi drivers.

Read: Customers stranded as LPG Retailers join Nationwide Strike

The LPG operators earlier expressed fear of going out of business, with the introduction of the Cylinder re-circulation programme, which will see the bottling of LPG cylinders at designated locations far from human settlements and sold to consumers at retail points, without users having to take their empty cylinders to vending station for refilling.

“We thought that the way the policy was being pushed through was as if there is no existing industry but we are all aware that the LPG industry has been existing for the past 25 years. We are only trying to apply a new strategy to an existing industry.”

“So it is just fair you try and accommodate the current players who have held the fort all this while and try and address all their grievances,” Mr. Kumi indicated and explained that the government was threatening to register new companies to take over the industry but that had been cancelled.
