At least four second cycle institutions in the Volta region have recorded cases of the novel corona virus pandemic, three weeks after partial re-opening of schools for final year students to prepare for their exit exams.

According to information available to Volta Online, the affected schools include, Mawuli School and Mawuko Girls’ SHS in Ho, the Bishop Herman College in Kpando and Dabala Senior High/Technical School.

Volta Online gathered that as of Friday June 10, three cases were confirmed at the Mawuli School and Dabala SHTS respectively, while Bishop Herman College had two cases with a case confirmed at Mawuko Girls’ SHS.

Although, school authorities are tightlipped on the matter, Volta Online understands health officials are working with the affected schools to manage the cases, while they make effort to reach out to the parents of the affected students with the news.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kwesi Djokoto, the Deputy Regional Director in-charge of Public Health, has assured all stakeholders of the safety of the students as the authorities were on top of the situation.

“We have expected that from the day of re-opening to the first three to four weeks, infections may be recorded as we have over 50,000 students from various locations returning to schools in Volta and Oti region put together.”

“With such a number, infection may occur, but what is important is that, our systems are designed to detect them (infections) in time to allow for sample collection and contact tracing as well as other measures to contain the situation.”
