Scare as Dilapidated Health Centre Closes down

By: Benjamin Owusu | Voltaonlinegh |

The people of Kwaakuae in the Krachi West District of the Oti Region are raising concerns over closure of the health centre in the area saying it will deprive them of access to health care delivery.

The only health centre in the farming community has been closed down due to its dilapidated nature to avert any unforeseen happenings to the staff and the general public who will be accessing it but residents fear its closure will be disastrous.

Visibly developed cracks in the building

A visit by Benjamin Owusu to the community revealed that the shut-down clinic had visible cracks and was vacated by the staff who took the decision for fear of a possible collapse leading to their entrapment.

The reporter also found out that a newly constructed health centre attached with yet to be completed staff quarters remained under lock and rather serving as an abode to reptiles.

Other checks revealed that another health facility at Bobodin with its auxiliary structures has also remained in the bush after completion and not serving the purpose for which public funds had been advanced for its construction.

The yet-to-be-used new health centre at Kwaakuea

Speaking in an interview with the Assemblyman for the area, Francis Manu, he bemoaned the closure of the only health facility in the community saying, it remained a big headache as residents were being compelled to walk for long distances to nearby communities to have access to health care services.

Mr. Manu disclosed that the contractor at site abandoned the project as a result of lack of funds of which he (Mr. Manu) prompted the Member of Parliament for the area, Helen Adjoa Ntoso for assistance.

He appealed to the appropriate authorities to act swiftly and complete the staff quarters and get centre operational to take care of the health needs of residents.

Some residents who spoke to Voltaonlinegh argued that if the facility was not completed on time and operational, many might lose their lives to sicknesses because of the distance they needed to travel to access a health facility.
