A torrential downpour on Tuesday afternoon displaced several residents in the Ho Municipality, submerging homes and destroying properties. The unexpected rains, which lasted nearly two hours, triggered severe flooding across multiple communities, causing widespread distress.
Worst-hit areas—including Tsiyikpota, Akpenamawu, Redeem-Road, Bankoe, Agortome, and parts of Sokode-Lokoe—remain in a state of devastation, with affected residents counting their losses. Many were seen desperately salvaging personal belongings from flooded homes, while others have sought refuge with friends and relatives.
The floodwater also overran bridges on major roads, temporarily halting vehicular movement and exacerbating the crisis.
The disaster has reignited calls for immediate intervention from the Ho Municipal Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). Residents insist that desilting choked gutters in the area could have prevented the flooding.

“The water had nowhere to go because the gutters are full of debris. If the authorities had cleared them, this wouldn’t have happened,” lamented a resident of Akpenamawu.
Another resident from Tsiyikpota expressed frustration, saying, “We are tired. Every time it rains heavily, our homes get flooded. We plead with the Assembly and NADMO to act now.”
Residents argue that clearing the drains would enable free flow of rainwater, reducing the likelihood of future disasters. In addition to immediate relief, they are demanding long-term flood mitigation measures, including proper drainage systems and routine maintenance.

With the rainy season intensifying, pressure is mounting on local authorities to take swift and decisive action to prevent another catastrophe.
