Young Ghanaian boxer Isaac Dogboe has become the country’s eighth world champion after knocking out Jessie Magdaleno to claim the WBO Super Bantamweight/junior featherweight title.

The bout came off at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia, USA, in the early hours of Sunday.

Both undefeated boxers came into the fight with high hopes, after the pre-bout weigh-ins were dominated by foul words labeled at each other.

Dogboe had described his Mexican opponent as the “worst world champion ever” with Magdaleno also referring to the Ghanaian as a noise maker.

However, it was Magdaleno to have the better of the opening exchanges by handing Dogboe, a first round knockdown.

The 23-year-old recovered in the second round, combining a couple of jabs which proved too fast for the Mexican to handle.

The Ghanaian dominated the contest right from the second round and finally landed the winning punch in the eleventh round.

First, the ‘Royal Storm’ knocked Magdaleno down but the champion quickly rose to continue with the bout.

However, a second knockdown proved damaging as the referee had to stop the bout in Dogboe’s favour for a TKO.

The young Ghanaian boxer’s record now stands at 19 bouts, 19 wins, with no losses or draws.

Dogboe also becomes Ghana’s youngest ever world champion and eighth in history – after winning the WBO Super Bantamweight/junior featherweight title.
