VRCC Grateful to UNFPA For Supporting The Region

The Volta Regional Coordinating council (VRCC) has acknowledged activities of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as it applauded themĀ  for the great support they have offered the people of the Volta region in the past one year.

The UNFPA as part of their activities through the VRCC in the region assisted some young females to go into apprenticeship in areas including bakery, sewing, hairdressing, manicure and pedicure, decorations and among other trades.

The beneficiaries from different district across the region, who were present at the Government of Ghana/UNFPA Seventh Country Programme 2020 End of year review meeting, expressed gratitude to the UNFPA and the VRCC for the privilege given to them.

They said the various training they had as young ladies have helped them to be financially stable and also prevented them from being dependent on young boys for money in their various communities which in a long run push them to compromise sexually.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, thanked the UNFPA for their funding support and partnership with government in the campaign on improving sexual reproductive health, gender equality and a campaign against gender-based violence.

According to him, the review meeting offers such opportunity to access the benefits of interventions carried out by sub implementing partners during the 2020 program implementation.

He said the VRCC with the support of the UNFPA have been undertaking activities in the region in addressing the progress on child marriage and gender-Based violence particularly by empowering girls through livelihood skills training.

He said, the skills trainings are aimed at improving economic status of girls and reducing their vulnerability to gender-Based violence as well as its consequences including force marriage and cohabitation.

He commended sub-implementing partners and the development partners for their contribution to the development and growth of our region. ā€œI wish to also commend the chiefs and people of the UNFPA operating districts for their continue willingness to host important interventions. They have shown commitment to national developmentā€

ā€œOn behalf of the council, I wish to single out UNFPA for supporting agents and critical development interventions in the Volta and Oti regions since 2014. These interventions are aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality, promoting family planning, ending teenage pregnancy and domestic violence as well as promoting quality adolescent sexual and reproductive healthā€ he added

Meanwhile, Madam Victoria Fato, A representative of the VRCC observed that, the role of the UNFPA, sub implementing agents and development partners are commendable and encourage them to continue their support to the region in the subsequent years.

Anlo-Afiadenyigba To Get New Police Station After Attack On MP Elect

Various stakeholders in the Anlo-Afiadenyigba community, including the Chief, Torgbui KadzahloĀ  have put up measures to close down the Anlo-Afiadenyigba police station in the community and all personnel therein.

According to Torgbui Kadzahlo, the post office which has not being in use for several years, will be renovated and use as a new police station to serve the community.

He indicated that, they have sent an appeal to the head of the Police hierarchy in Accra to transfer all the police officers from the community and bring new ones. This he said will boost security in the community.

The Chief’s reactions follows an armed robbery attack on the Member of Parliament elect for Keta Constituency, Dzudzorli Gakpey last week Thursday.

The incident which nearly caused the life of the newly elected member of Parliament, sparked confusion among the residents of the community regardingĀ the inability of the police to rescue the Victim or apprehend the armed robbers.

Speaking on the situation, the presiding member for the Keta Municipal Assembly, Amos Ametsimeh also reiterated that, the community lacks maximum security, hence the need to put stringent measures in place to curb issues of robbery.

He however called on the youth to corporate with relevant stakeholders in the community so as to initiate their plans.

Chief Adds Voice To Plight Of Agbozume Kete Weavers

The Chief of the Royal Family of SOME, Togbe Atiane, has agreed to challenges raised by some Kete Weavers in the Agbozume market regarding issues of middlemen.Ā 

According to Togbe, the activities of theseĀ  middlemen is crippling progress of the weavers in these recentĀ  times .

He said, Kete weaving has since been the source of livelihood for many residences in the area decades ago when their forefathers brought it from Ketu in Nigeria.

Togbe Atiane further explained that Kete weaving has taken the image of Agbozume across Ghana, Nigeria and beyond adding that, the Agbozume Kete is the original among all kete products across the West Africa sub region.

He emphasized that due to quality product delivery of the weavers, some people were influenced to travel across the country to establish the weaving industries in Nigeria.

He therefore appealed for government support to curb this and many heavy burden on the citizens of Agbozume so as to sustain the business.

Abount two weeks ago, Voltaonlinegh reported that Kete Weavers of Agbozume in the Ketu South Municipality of Volta Region have appealed to Government and other stakeholders to help curb the canker of middlemen in the Agbozume Kete market.

According to the Weavers in the report, this urgent request is to eradicate the cheating meted by middlemen in the Agbozume Kete Market on them.

Mr. Edem Joshua Galley, a Weaver at the Agbozume, explained that Kete weaving has since been a source of their livelihood and a profession for many people of Agbozume for many years.

He said, the trade which had helped a lot of people in the area to even attain higher education is no longer lucrative and attractive due to cheating and other financial challenges.

Mr. Galley stated that, the number of weavers in the business now as compared to some year ago is on the increase which makes the weaving business a-hand-to-mouth one in the area.

He further revealed that the act of these middlemen in the market has worsened the weaving profession in a way that many weavers are running the business at loss these days.

He also calls on Ministry of Trade and Industry to intervene in their affairs adding that their intervention can help boost the kete industry in Agbozume, Ghana and beyond.

He said authorities should assist by putting in proper measures to bring some sanity in their operation in the market so as to make a living.

Election2020:Ā  President Akufo-Addo Gets Second Term

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been declared winner of the December 7, 2020 Presidential elections, paving way for his second term as the President of the Republic of Ghana.

The NPP candidate secured a total of 6,730,413 votes, representing 51.59 per cent to his beat closest contender John Dramani Mahama of the NDC, who polled a total of 6,214,889 votes, in Monday’s presidential polls.

Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission and the Returning Officer for the 2020 Presidential Elections announcing the results of the polls on Wednesday evening, said the total vote cast of 13,434,574, representing 79 percent voter turnout, was without the votes of Techiman South Constituency.

She however explained that the 515,524-vote margin between NPP and NDC candidates could not be overturned by results from Techiman South, which was under dispute.

Prior to the announcement, supporters of the opposition NDC earlier massed u at the precincts of the EC Head office in Accra to protest what they claimed was the manipulation of results in favour of the incumbent and demand the declaration of their candidate John Mahama as winner of the elections. They were however put in check by the heavy security guarding the premises.

Election2020: Ā Akufo-Addo Wins Four Regions; As Mahama Takes Early Lead In Presidential Polls

The Electoral Commission has begun churning out certified results from Monday’s presidential elections more than 24-hours after close of polls.

The commission at a midnight press conference on Wednesday said it has received results from 14 out of the 16 regions of Ghana at its national collation centre but have so far certified seven of those results.

These are, Central, Oti, Ahafo, Volta, Bono, North East and Upper West regions.

Out of the seven, President Akufo-Addo of the NPP has so far won in four regions, namely, Central, Ahafo, Bono and North East Regions; while John Mahama of the NDC won in the other three regions of Oti, Volta and Upper West regions.

However, the cumulative votes of the 3 regions won by John Mahama puts him in the lead with a total of 1, 997, 450 votes, while President Akufo-Addo accumulatedĀ  1, 500,310 votes from the four regions. Leaving a margin of 497, 140 votes between the two.

The EC chairperson, madam Jean Mensah addressing the press conference said the commission was working with political party agents and other stakeholders to certify the results from remaining regions and declare the final result later on Wednesday.

Touching on the commission’s inability to declare the results in 24 hours as announced prior to the polls, Jean Mensa explained that they had to revise their schedule due to rains and other technical challenges that were recorded at some collation centres across the country but assured the process should be done and dusted by close of Wednesday.

Per the provisions of the 1992 constitution, a candidate in a presidential election requires more 50 per cent of vote cast to be duly elected as a president of Ghana.

Confirmed: Amewu Wins Hohoe Seat for NPP With Over 5000 Vote Margin

Energy Minister and NPP Candidate for Hohoe, John-Peter Amewu has secured a historic win in Monday’s parliamentary elections with 5,131 vote margin.

Mr. Amewu beat off stiff competition from the NDC’s Prof. Margaret Kweku to annex the once opposition safe seat to the camp the governing NPP, for the first time since the beginning of the 4th republic.

He polled 26,952 votes as against the NDC’sĀ  21,821 votes, overturning the party’s almost 29,000 vote deficit in theĀ  2016 elections to clinch the historic feat on his their attempt at the seat.

Mr. Amewu just as his contender, served as an MCE for Hohoe under erstwhile Kufuor led NPP government between 2001 and 2009 . He also served as the Regional chairman of the NPP between 2014 and 2017, before being appointed as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on the assumption of the Akufo-Addo government in January 2017.

Election2020: NPP on the Verge of History in Hohoe; As Akufo-Addo Makes Huge Gains in Presidential Polls

The governing New Patriotic Party is on the verge of a historic feat in the Hohoe Constituency as President Akufo-Addo has made significant gains in the opposition, National Democratic Congress’ stronghold.

Results of Monday’s presidential elections in the area, saw the President polling a total of 14,389 votes compared to his 2016 performance of 6,869 votes.

On the other hand, the NDC’s John MahamaĀ  witnessed a marginal decline in his 2016 performance of 35,117 votes to 33,542 votes in 2020.

In the parliamentary race, Energy Minister, John-Peter Amewu is highly tipped to flip the Hohoe seat to the camp of the NPP for the first time since the start of the 4th Republic in 1992.

Provisional results from 117 out 124 polling stations in the Constituency put Mr. Amewu in the lead with 24,074 votes as against the NDC’s Prof. Margaret Kwaku 19,883 votes.

If confirmed, Mr. Amewu will be the sole NPP MP in theĀ  next Parliament from the Volta region, as the NDC is most likely to retain the remaining 17 seats in the region.

Election2020: NDC, NPP Applaud Smooth Voting Process

Functionaries of the governing New Patriotic Party and opposition, National Democratic Congress in the Volta region have lauded the smooth conduct of the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the region.

The officials who were on separate monitoring rounds earlier in the day, told press men the exercise has generally been peaceful, contrary to earlier claims of planned intimidation and harassment by some security elements ahead of the polls.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, NDC MP for North Tongu after casting his vote at the Aveyime Salem Methodist primary polling station, commended the Electoral Commission, the security services, party agents and officials as well as voters for an excellent proceedings so far.

He said “I am also particularly happy that contrary to earlier threats that so called secessionists will try to undermine the voting process and forment trouble and prevent people from voting. So far there is no sign of them,”

He added that “I am glad to observe that the security presence appears to be very well laid out. And so I want to hope that the day will end very peacefully. I also hope that we will have an incident free, fair, peaceful and credible elections at the end of the day.”

The Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, Kafui Agbleze who have been touring centres in Anloga and Keta noted that “the process is smooth so far.” He said there have been some alarms raised, but his checks indicated they were false.

The Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP, Makafui Woanyah also expressed satisfaction with the process so far, adding that all the false alarms raised by the NDC are much ado about nothing.

So far, all 18 constituencies in the Volta Region have experienced a smooth process with some voters being subjected to facial recognition. Whereas most of the centres started on time, a few delayed due to late arrival of materials.

Election2020: Heavy Rains disrupt Voting In Parts of Volta

An afternoon downpour in parts of the Volta region on election day has disrupted voting in some constituencies of the region.

The rain which lasted for about an hour led to a temporary halt in the exercise in areas such as Dzodze in Ketu North, Hohoe, Have-Ando in Afadzato South and parts of the Akatsi South Constituency.

Volta Online Editor, Daniel Yao Akpabli reports from Dzodze that, the downpour which came as a surprise to many, according to some voters was a sign of the peaceful nature of the process in the area.

He however noted that, prior to the rains, many polling stations visited recorded little above 50 percent of voter turnout.

Mr. Prosper, Kpatakpla, and Mr. Oscar Haligah, the Presiding Officers for D/A Mite Primary and JHS respectively noted that the exercise since morning was generally peaceful but the rain interrupted the processes.

They however observed that, even though the rain delayed the processes, the numbers will add up by close of the voting time as they were hopeful that, the few remaining ones will turn out.
ā€œIf not because of the rain, we would have even been done with the votingā€ Mr Oscar explained.

Meanwhile, the presiding officers in Both D/A Junior High School and Primary at Tadzewu, Mr. Amevor Abel and Ms. Ernerstina Awuye-Kpobi said no case of abnormality was recorded.
They said, they are putting in every measure to ensure that, voters strictly observe covid-19 protocal.

Meanwhile voting in other parts of the Ketu North Constituency including, Penyi, Devego, Dalame, Kuli, Dzogbepuime, Tornu, Tamekorpe, Dalikorpe, Kave, Torve, Dekpor, Afife and its adjourning area went on peacefully.

Akatsi South Presiding Officers Deny Accredited Media Coverage

The media covering the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary election in the Akatsi South Municipality is greeted with dissatisfaction with the attitudes of some presiding officers officiating the exercise.

While some Presiding officers are good toward the media, some in the polling stations are tight-lipped on information available to be given to the accredited media house to help inform the public on proceedings stating that, they have orders from above not to disclose any information.

In the Akatsi Court Hall A, the presiding officer who only gave her name as Saraphine, kept frustration the Finder’s Newspaper Reporter with the excuse of she being busy till the reporter decided to leave the polling station.

At Torve 2B, the presiding officer, Mr. Godwin Setsoafia said, he is not to give any information to theĀ  Reporter while the Presiding officer in Torve 2A said anything regarding the exercise under his supervision should be directed to the Returning officer in the Municipality.

At the PTC Tobaco block 1, 4 out of the 5 Presiding Officers have declined to speak to the media in exception of Mr. Emmanuel Ahiaba who granted the media an interview.

The four said, they were ask not to speak to any media organizations but were not able to disclose where the order came from.

Mr. Awitsi Jerry Kwame, Presiding officer at CHPS compound Gadzekpo, told the media, it was part of their electoral rules not to talk to the media but directed them to get information from the Party Polling Agents at the station instead. He also added that, it is an order from above not to speak to the media regarding proceeding during the entire exercise.

The situation is described by many accredited media house as challenging as it is affecting their smooth coverage of the process.

Speaking to the Returning Officer of the Municipality concerning the development, Madam Akorfa Buabasa Asamoah, expressed dissatisfaction regarding the conduct of her officers toward the media describing their attitude as worrying

She noted that, the work of the media in this exercise cannot be downplayed adding that, how to relate with the media formed part of their training prior to the election exercise.

She said the media should be treated with some sort of care for they are the mouth piece of the commission in the process.

She further assured the media not to be much worried for her outfit will bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, checks conducted in some polling station later in the day in the Akatsi South Constituency pointed out that, the situation remained the same.
