”Unsolicited calls & messages, How do we fight them off our phones? [Opinion]

0

BY: King Nobert Akpablie | Opinion |

Do you also get worried over commercial messages including Short Message Services (SMS) and pre-recorded voice calls from your mobile phone that you never subscribed to?

I have had to fume helplessly at my phone when such calls and messages come. And frustratingly some of these messages come with undue deductions from your airtime. They are often without an option to opt out.

As the world leaps into complete digitization with organizations especially marketing and advertising firms taking advantage of the opportunities it provides, mobile phone users are increasingly exposed to what is termed telemarketing activities.

Telemarketing is the marketing of goods or services to potential customers over the telephone and the Internet. Although this may provide consumers the platform to make a well informed choice from varieties of products and services, it often turns to be frustrating especially when such messages are sent without the consent of the phone user.

Many phone users in Ghana had to bear the brunt of what is termed Unsolicited Electronic Messages (UECs) from their service providers and marketing firms. In some cases, unjustifiable deductions are made from their airtime when such messages are sent.

“Get up to GHC 200,000 loan in 24 hours! call 02…. now!” except perhaps Kwame Despite, who doesn’t want such money? lol. Very common are such loan offers from Loan Companies.

Although some of these messages may be helpful to some consumers sometimes, it becomes uncomfortable when one is being bombarded regularly and many important messages sometimes remain unnoticed.

The measures to prevent the promotional messages from coming in had been in place for several years. However, not many users are aware. Telecommunication Networks have also not educated their subscribers enough on handling this menace.

As a subscriber to any mobile or internet service, you do have your rights and responsibilities. These include the right to be informed about products and services in complete, accurate, simple and clear language with options to subscribe or opt out.
Telemarketing without the consent of the phone user is illegal particularly when no options are provided for deactivation.
While your rights as a consumer are protected by the law, you are also expected to responsibly prevent these messages from pestering you.

The National Communications Authority, Ghana’s Telecommunications Regulator recently revoked all subscriptions services and later directed Mobile Network Operators to resume such services with specific adherence to the laid down guidelines that protect phone users.

As a phone user read carefully terms and conditions on contracts, promos and adverts and understanding them before opting in. Avoid giving your real number when registering with unimportant or untrusted companies and websites.

Stopping the barrage of these messages is just a dial away. The NCA has announced some short codes for managing such messages.
For MTN subscribers, dial *175# and option 1, AirtelTigo subscribers can dial *100# with option 4 and *463# with option 1 for Vodafone subscribers.

Section 50 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008, Act 772 states that “except in the case of a notice sent by an electronic communications provider to a customer in relation to the service, a person shall not send unsolicited electronic communications to a consumer without obtaining the prior consent of the consumer”.

So next time you receive an Unsolicited Message on your phone without your consent or an option to deactivate, know that someone is breaking Ghana’s law!

BY: KALD |Voltaonlinegh.com |

At least two persons have reportedly died on the spot after two passenger mini buses had a head-on collision on the Hohoe-Jasikan section of the Eastern corridor road.

The accident, which occurred on Saturday, between Akpafu and Bowiri in the Oti Region, also left several passengers with severe injuries, according to information gathered by Volta Online.

One of the vehicles was said to  be traveling from Kadjebi towards Hohoe, while the other was moving from Hohoe to Jasikan.

The injured victims were conveyed to the hospital at Jasikan and Hohoe by personnel of the National Ambulance Service who were called to the scene.

Reports however suggested that, the number of casualties may rise as a result of the degree of injuries recorded.

Though, the cause of collision is yet to be ascertained, some residents blamed it on over speeding on the part of the drivers, due to the good nature of the road, which was about 90 per cent completed .

‘We all know how bad the road has been in the past, but now that it has been worked on, some of our motorists are just driving with reckless abandon,’ a regular user of the road told Volta Online.

Meanwhile, the two deceased passengers have been identified as residents of Hohoe Zongo, who were on board the Hohoe bound bus, returning from a marriage ceremony at Jasikan.

According to a Facebook post by Mr. John-Peter Amewu, MP for Hohoe, the two were members the governing New Patriotic Party in the constituency.

He wrote, ‘I am saddened to learn of the sudden demise of some 6(six) people, including Makaila Ussif (polling station executive for E.P primary school) and Mubarak alias Mangozy(Party Member) who both died in a car accident along the Jasikan to Hohoe road.

The details are still sketchy but I am told they were returning from a wedding ceremony in Jasikan.

My heart breaks for the grieving families;  may God comfort them during this difficult time.

It is my prayer that God will grant divine healing to Yussif Abdul Jaburah(also a polling station executive at Cmb shed) who is receiving treatment at the Jasikan government hospital.’

Few months ago, a school bus transporting SHS students crashed on the same stretch, injuring scores of students.

‘Govt doesn’t grow money on trees to fund Development’ Amewu justifies E-levy

0

BY: KALD | Voltaonlinegh.Com |

The Minister for Railways Development, Mr. John-Peter Amewu has justified the need for the introduction of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy), saying, ‘government does not grow money on trees to fund  developmental projects.’

Speaking at the government’s Townhall meeting in Ho on Friday, the Hohoe MP posited that, the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the global economy, of which the Ghanaian economy was no exception, had compelled the government to adopt difficult but necessary measures to keep the economy afloat.

According to him, revenue measures such as the e-levy was necessary to raise the needed resources domestically  to fund the various developmental initiatives, so much desired by citizens across  the country.

‘We all desire for development, but the truth is that, government does not grow money on trees to fund such development,’ Mr. Amewu stated and urged the citizens to support the government through the payment of the e-levy to help fix the roads, and many social amenities they seek.

Reacting to proposals that, the government should find alternative sources to raise resources for development and jettison the e-levy, which some believed would overburden the citizens, the Hohoe legislator said there was no alternative to domestic revenue mobilization, since external loans would still have be paid for with revenues from domestic sources.

He therefore appealed to residents of the Volta region to consider the benefit of the Levy to the country, and ignore the propaganda of the opposition NDC MPs, whom he said want to make political capital out of the policy.

On his part, Mr. Pius Hadzide, CEO of the National Youth Authority, urged young people in the region to prevail on their MPs to pass the e-levy in order for the government to fund the various youth interventions captured in the 2022 budget.

“It was heartwarming that the Parliament of Ghana accepted the Agyenkwa Budget and passed the appropriation bill. I thank the government and Members of parliament, especially the 17 NDC MPs from the Volta region, for thinking about the youth and passing the appropriation bill,” he stated and appealed to the MPs to conclude the process by approving the e-levy, which is a key revenue measure needed to fund the 13 youth interventions in the budget.

‘There are as such as 13 interventions for the youth in the budget, one of  which is the YouStart initiative, which will build the capacity and provide funding to young entrepreneurs. And The e-levy is a critical source of funding for this initiative,’ Mr. Hadzide stated.

Dr. Archibald Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister  also indicated that, various road projects in the region which have been earmarked in the 2022 budget for construction, could suffer delays should government not raise the needed resources to execute them, hence appealed to all stakeholders support the government in that regard by embracing the e-levy.

Both the Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta and Information Minister, Mr. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah,  who addressed the townhall meeting, also took turns to respond to queries from participants, drawn from various interest groups in the region.
