The Overlord of Gbi Traditional Council, Togbega Gabusu VI has called on Muslim faithful to pray for the Eastern Corridor Road project which was awarded some years ago to be completed.

Works on the Eastern Corridor Road project stalled for lack of funds and non-payment to contractors resulting in the contractors abandoning the project.

The road which cuts across eight administrative districts of the Volta Region and is expected to reduce travelling time from the south to the north of the country is in deplorable state with the worse and dangerous portions between Hohoe and Jasikan, Jasikan and Kadjebi as well as areas around Kpassah and Damanko.

Ramadan Conference 2018

Togbega Gabusu asked that Muslims put the prayer for the completion of the road before Allah and added that he would readily visit any mosque to offer sacrifice of praise if that prayer request is answered.

He was speaking at a durbar last Saturday to climax the 24th annual national Ramadan Conference held at Hohoe, Volta Region from 27th-29thApril, 2018.

The conference brought together delegates of Muslim Umah from all ten regions of Ghana as part of the preparations to embark on their spiritual journey.

Togbega also spoke briefly on the theme of the Conference, The Need for Peace, The Role of the Muslim. He underscored the need for religious tolerance among Ghanaians for peace and development

“Human beings all over the world believe in a Supreme Being. It is required of each of us to live in peace with one another whether Muslims, Christians or Traditionalists.”

Delegates at the Conference

National and regional Imams, government officials, chiefs and other dignitaries who were also in attendance added their voice to the call for peace among Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, in a communique compiled by Chairman, Alhaji M. Ghazali Yakubu and Secretary, Hon Alhaji Baba N. Dawud of the sub-committee appointed by the delegates, and issued at the conference said it is expected that Muslims commence this year’s Ramadan fasting on Tuesday, May 15 or Wednesday, May 17.

“The first day for the sighting of the moon shall start on Monday, 14th day of May when Sha’ban shall be 29 days. If sighted, Tuesday, 15th day of May becomes the first day of Ramadan 2018. If not sighted, Tuesday, 15th May shall be the 30th day of Sha’ban then Wednesday, 16th day of May shall automatically be the first day of Ramadan 2018.”

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.

GJA-Volta Marks World Press Freedom with a Business Development Forum at Nkwanta

Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Volta Region chapter on Wednesday, April 25, marked the 2018  International Press Freedom Day ahead of the mandated May 3, with a business development caucus at Nkwanta, capital of the Nkwanta-South Municipal.

The forum formed part of GJA regional chapter’s flagship project to spur the founding, development and modernization of businesses in the Volta Region, with backing from the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) Volta-Eastern chapter.

The forum which was facilitated by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) and the Nkwanta Municipal Assembly and themed, Reviving Local Industries, provided the platform for business people to interact with bureaucrats, business development officers and journalists.

Among the business people in attendance were cassava, yam and rice farmers and marketers, gari processers, traders, garage owners, dressmakers, carpenters and honey makers.

There were also representatives of the Ministry of Trade and Industries, National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI) and Gratis, makers of light processing industrial machines.

Mr John Thasun, Nkwanta Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE), said agriculture is the bedrock of the economy of the area with about 140,000 population.  The municipality which shares borders with Togo has a dual vegetation area; forested as well as deciduous and with a mixed climate.

The Municipality has sprawling valley bottoms and rolling hills and with an expansive National Park, Kyabobo- 360 square kilometers.

The area, experts say, has the capacities to be an expansive granary of the country and a tubers production haven.

The MCE believes these factors coupled with the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs and a cashew cultivation agenda, among other programmes including, artisans skill upgrade programme, would raise the economic stakes of the area.

Human Resource Manageress of Agya Appiah Bitters Limited, Mrs Tenkorang stressed the need for all businesses to be registered so they could be traceable and available for genuine business transactions.

Anthony Bells Kafui Kanyi, GJA Volta Chairman also emphasised the need for journalists to pursue stories that would bring up issues that negatively affect businesses, such as bad roads, credit sourcing, unreliable power supply among others for discussion.

Earlier, Journalists stopped over at Volta Red, an oil palm processing factory near Kadjebi, where the managers said business was good but wanted government’s support with some form of irrigation to considerably increase production on their farms.

Ghana will on May 3, host this year’s International World Press Freedom Day on the theme “Keeping Power in check: Media Justice and the Rule of Law.

Stigmatising People Living with HIV Cruel- Dr Ashinyo

0

The Volta Regional HIV/TB Coordinator, Dr Anthony Ashinyo has appealed to the public to desist from the discrimination and stigmatization of persons living with HIV.

According to him, labeling persons living with HIV as promiscuous, deviant and deserving of the epidemic is cruel and inimical to efforts and programmes to end the HIV epidemic.

Dr. Ashinyo said there are different ways that a person can get infected with HIV including use of non-sterile equipment, multiperson use of injecting equipment, through delivery, contact with body fluid, breastfeeding, and not just through unprotected sex.

He made this known at a day’s workshop organised by the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) to hold an interactive session with Health Reporters and Senior Editors from the Eastern and Volta regions on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at Ho in the Volta Regional capital.

The workshop aimed to increase knowledge on HIV and AIDS, focus on regional perspective and challenges in reporting on HIV and AIDS issues, share current information on the epidemic and progress made in the national response

Also, to empower media personnel to initiate more programs and stories on HIV and AIDS and update media on new terminologies used in writing HIV and AIDS news.

He said AIDS is not a deadly disease describing it as, “syndrome of opportunistic infections and diseases that develop as the body’s immune systems are suppressed due to HIV infection.”

He therefore, advocated for people to undergo tests to know their HIV status to take caution to remain negative if tested negative or get support (Antiretroviral therapy)to manage one’s status if tested positive in ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat.

Heart-Heart Ambassadors who were in attendance also added their voice to putting an end to discrimination and stigmatization of persons living with HIV.

They called for a change in how the epidemic is referred to in many Ghanaian languages, for instance in Ewe, “ Dikanaku” (Grow-lean-and-die) which suggest the disease is deadly and scare people from even attempting to know their status.

Meanwhile, technical coordinators of the two regions in briefs on regional response updated the gathering on the achievements of the Commission in their respective regions.

They included building capacity of focal persons to effectively coordinate decentralised response, use of social media to disseminate information among key stakeholders and reaching out to persons living with HIV, among others.

However, lack of financial resources, loss to follow-up, non-availability of lay counselors, lack of food and good nutrition to prisoners and false claim of HIV cure, etc were pointed out as challenges to ending the AIDS epidemic.

Dogboe Becomes Ghana’s Youngest Ever World Champion

Dogboe, Ghana's youngest world champ

Young Ghanaian boxer Isaac Dogboe has become the country’s eighth world champion after knocking out Jessie Magdaleno to claim the WBO Super Bantamweight/junior featherweight title.

The bout came off at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia, USA, in the early hours of Sunday.

Both undefeated boxers came into the fight with high hopes, after the pre-bout weigh-ins were dominated by foul words labeled at each other.

Dogboe had described his Mexican opponent as the “worst world champion ever” with Magdaleno also referring to the Ghanaian as a noise maker.

However, it was Magdaleno to have the better of the opening exchanges by handing Dogboe, a first round knockdown.

The 23-year-old recovered in the second round, combining a couple of jabs which proved too fast for the Mexican to handle.

The Ghanaian dominated the contest right from the second round and finally landed the winning punch in the eleventh round.

First, the ‘Royal Storm’ knocked Magdaleno down but the champion quickly rose to continue with the bout.

However, a second knockdown proved damaging as the referee had to stop the bout in Dogboe’s favour for a TKO.

The young Ghanaian boxer’s record now stands at 19 bouts, 19 wins, with no losses or draws.

Dogboe also becomes Ghana’s youngest ever world champion and eighth in history – after winning the WBO Super Bantamweight/junior featherweight title.
