Speaking at the inauguration of the Municipal team earlier, he stated that Ghana Statistical Service is collaborating with other key stakeholders to conduct the census across the country.

He described the census as “a statistical operation covering the whole country which allows for the collection, processing, publishing and dissemination of information on the structure of agriculture and the state of development of the rural areas.”

By this, data will be collected directly from the households and some institutions on their agricultural activities including crop farming, tree planting, fishing, fish farming, and livestock rearing.

Information will also be collected from communities mainly on the geography, availability of basic facilities, socio-economic conditions, transport infrastructure, availability of community services, potentials for development and constraints to development.

The MCE added that the objective of the Ghana Census of Agriculture (GCA) is to produce and disseminate complete and reliable agricultural data to meet the needs of policy makers and other users to support informed decision making and for monitoring development programmes aimed at further developing agriculture and the rural areas.

Mr. Thasun therefore, appealed to farmers and institutions to cooperate and support the enumerators with the necessary information when they visit.

HTU Chooses First-ever Female SRC President

0
Vera Agbenya, HTU SRC President

Ho Technical University (HTU) went to the polls on Monday, April 30, 2018 to give the nod for the first time, to a female to steer the affairs of the student body.

Vera Fafa Agbenya made history when she secured 1,245 votes signifying 51.6% as against his male contender, Bright Delali Atakuma’s 1,140 representing 47.2% to become the University’s first female President of Students Representative Council (SRC), 50 years after its establishment.

Elections in HTU had witnessed female SRC President Aspirants but unlike Vera, none came out victorious as males continued to carry the day after vote counts for the past 50 years.

However, by dint of diligence and determination, Vera won the position that has been construed to be the preserve for men.

Immediate Past President, Frederick Cobby Mudey was happy about the outcome of the election. He disclosed that he supports women empowerment and sees Vera’s victory as historic and a dream come true.

“It is an honour handing over as the jubilee President to a history President. I always fight for women empowerment and I think the time has come where people are hearing our voices because Cape Coast Technical University recorded their female President-elect few days to our history”

It is my belief that, she will deliver as expected from her in order to dispute the critics of women not being able to withstand pressure from such an office, ” he added.

Meanwhile, 2013/2014 HTU SRC General Secretary, Courage Christson Tetteh said, Vera’s victory was as a result of conscious efforts made towards the progress of women and not just by chance.

“In the month of May, the current Women Commissioner, Lily Dzamesi along with Global Shapers Ho Hub, LIFE-MAC Network Foundation, Feminine Star Africa and Barcamp Ho, launched a Woman Acceleration Summit to commemorate the International Women Day and pressed for the progress of women. It is therefore, not surprising to hear that a female President has been elected following this event.”

He added the Institution had its first female rector four years ago and a historic first female SRC President was just what it needed. He therefore, urged the President to excel in discharging her duties to prove the point that the position of SRC President is not solely for men.

Free Access to Journalism Profession Cause for Worry

0

Though she recognised the good works of committed and hardworking journalists in the country whose investigations have brought relief to people, solved age-long problems and exposed wrongs in society, she added, “we can do it better.”

According to her, there are those result-oriented journalists in the media. However, there are others who are there causing harm to the image of journalists and one gets to hear phrases such as “so-called journalists” among others and blamed that on free access to the profession by persons with little or no formal training in journalism.

The Group News Editor said currently, there are no restrictions as to who qualifies to be in the media as is the case when it comes to the fields of law, medicine, architecture, etc, where these professionals are trained and licensed to operate.

Madam Eyram Bashan was speaking on Joy News Prime at 7 last evening ahead of World Press Day today, May 3 and monitored by voltaonlinegh.com.

According to her, the media (airspace) is so critical to the development of every nation and it must take proper training of its workers to make the needed impact.

She said there are “numerous sub-standard journalism training schools in the country,” and contributing immensely to the problem.

On remuneration, Dr. Etse Sikanku, Communications Consultant agreed the economic situation in the country is not helping and called for the need for media personnel to be well paid to motivate them to do more.

Meanwhile, President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo has been speaking ahead of the commemoration  of this year’s World Press Freedom Day to be hosted by Ghana on the theme: “Keeping Power in check: Media, Justice and the rule of law”

0
A section of Eastern Corridor road

The Overlord of Gbi Traditional Council, Togbega Gabusu VI has called on Muslim faithful to pray for the Eastern Corridor Road project which was awarded some years ago to be completed.

Works on the Eastern Corridor Road project stalled for lack of funds and non-payment to contractors resulting in the contractors abandoning the project.

The road which cuts across eight administrative districts of the Volta Region and is expected to reduce travelling time from the south to the north of the country is in deplorable state with the worse and dangerous portions between Hohoe and Jasikan, Jasikan and Kadjebi as well as areas around Kpassah and Damanko.

Ramadan Conference 2018

Togbega Gabusu asked that Muslims put the prayer for the completion of the road before Allah and added that he would readily visit any mosque to offer sacrifice of praise if that prayer request is answered.

He was speaking at a durbar last Saturday to climax the 24th annual national Ramadan Conference held at Hohoe, Volta Region from 27th-29thApril, 2018.

The conference brought together delegates of Muslim Umah from all ten regions of Ghana as part of the preparations to embark on their spiritual journey.

Togbega also spoke briefly on the theme of the Conference, The Need for Peace, The Role of the Muslim. He underscored the need for religious tolerance among Ghanaians for peace and development

“Human beings all over the world believe in a Supreme Being. It is required of each of us to live in peace with one another whether Muslims, Christians or Traditionalists.”

Delegates at the Conference

National and regional Imams, government officials, chiefs and other dignitaries who were also in attendance added their voice to the call for peace among Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, in a communique compiled by Chairman, Alhaji M. Ghazali Yakubu and Secretary, Hon Alhaji Baba N. Dawud of the sub-committee appointed by the delegates, and issued at the conference said it is expected that Muslims commence this year’s Ramadan fasting on Tuesday, May 15 or Wednesday, May 17.

“The first day for the sighting of the moon shall start on Monday, 14th day of May when Sha’ban shall be 29 days. If sighted, Tuesday, 15th day of May becomes the first day of Ramadan 2018. If not sighted, Tuesday, 15th May shall be the 30th day of Sha’ban then Wednesday, 16th day of May shall automatically be the first day of Ramadan 2018.”

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.
