Ho Harlem Basketball Club will host ‘After 7’ Basketball Club of Cantonments at the Ho Sports Stadium in a day’s friendly.
The event which begins at 9:00am, on Saturday, May 19, also sees the old players of the host club play against the visitors and as well play the current players of Ho Harlem who have been in consistent training.
The friendly, the first for the Club this year, is purposed to give the players a good test as Head Coach Charles Gomadonku begins his assessment of players in preparation towards the Sports Festival in July/August in Cape Coast.
Regional Basketball Coach, Charles Gomadonku, also known as Joebee, tells TalksenseSports, he expects a good performance from his side.
“I expect to see a very good performance from my boys, not necessarily a win; if we win, it will be a plus. I say this because After 7 Club is a very tough side. The reason we invited them was to gain experience because there are lots of things to learn from them while playing with them.”
Basketball, among other disciplines which weren’t part of last year’s Sports Festival in Kumasi has now been included and it calls for proper preparations from team Volta, who aims at bringing lots of laurels back home.
The Basketball fraternity also has plans of organizing a Justifier in June, to select players for the Sports Festival. Basketball clubs in the regions including AK Riffles from Akatsi, and others from Hohoe, Sogakope, Aflao and Kpando are expected to present players for the justification and selection process when the date is set in June.
A 24 year old driver in Ho, Courage Dogbey who engaged the services of his unemployed friend to abort the pregnancy of his (the driver) girlfriend has been sentenced to two years imprisonment on Wednesday by the Ho Circuit Court, after pleading guilty to aiding and abetment of criminal abortion.
Dogbey’s accomplice, 47 year old Dieu-Donne Mondale, who was also jailed similarly for criminal abortion, accordingly to a Ghanaian Times newspaper report on Thursday, injected the pregnant girl and administer a cocktail of other drugs to terminate her 8 months old pregnancy.
Mondale, who was the second accused pleaded not guilty with explanation, but the court said his explanation was consistent with his plea.
Sergeant Clever Ayayee of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) told the court presided over by Madam Priscilla Dikro that, the 17 year old girl was eight months pregnant at the time.
The court heard that on May 6, this year, the girl told her mother that she was pregnant and mentioned Dogbey as the person responsible for the pregnancy.
Her mother in turn informed Dogbey about the pregnancy, who then contacted the second accused for help to get rid of the pregnancy.
The court heard that, Mondale demanded Ghc400 from Dogbey to buy the necessary medications to terminate the pregnancy, after which Dogbey made an initial deposit of Ghc50 to him.
The prosecution revealed that, on May 9, Dogbey took the girl to the house of Mondale who injected her and also gave the other drugs to her, before collecting an additional Ghc300 from the first accused.
The prosecution said that, as a result of the injection and the drugs the girl took, the foetus dropped into a latrine pit while she was attending to nature’s call the next morning, which caused her to bleed profusely.
She was rushed to the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho, where doctors and nurses worked round the clock to save her life, said the prosecution.
After she narrated what her boyfriend and his friend did to her, a report was made to DOVVSU, whereupon the two men were arrested.
The prosecution said that Dogbey and Mondale admitted to the offence in their caution statements to the police.

It was an exciting week for Volta players in the National Division One League. Player performance has been exceeded my expectations. As a Writer/Sports Journalist from the region, I seek to follow, monitor and expose their exploits to the world. This Mid-week, our featured player is Wisdom Ameded.
Wisdom Ameded, born on 20th July, 1996 is a central defender who currently plays for Vision FC. The talented kid joined Vision FC 3 seasons ago from AC Sondisco. He rose through the ranks and now doubles as the captain for the side. He has featured in all 11 matches for his team this season. Even though he is yet to record a goal this season, his work rate and compulsive nature at the heart of defense makes it practically challenging for opposing team strikers to exert their dominance there. He was voted Vision FC’s player of the season in 2016. His athleticism and good play got him unto the starting 11 and lasted 90 minutes in his side’s 2-0 victory over Okyeman Planers. Goalkeeper Melike Dzado Rich was unused substitute. The goal keeper is expected to return to the starting roll soon.
Goalkeeper Massawudu Inusah was in the post and played full interim as Danbort FC suffered in the hands of Accra Lions. The shot-stopper continues his mixed stay in the goal post with inconsistent cheat sheets records. Vision FC put 3 goals pass him and went unanswered. Massawudu was a former player of Kwamekrom De Youngsters FC.
Kpando Heart of Lions came back to winning ways as they stunned Sporting Mirren by a lone goal. Goalkeeper Gabriel Nudakpa, Musah Amevor, Charles Quarcoo, Abednego Sarfo, all started for Hearts of Lions at the Teshie MATS Park in Nungua. Charles Quarcoo scored the only goal of the match on the 33rd minutes to secure all 3 points and got substituted in the second half. Eric Esso who started from the bench had a feel of the action on the 76th minute. Gordon Akaminko watched the game from the bench as unused substitute. Meanwhile youth graduate Samuel Agbenyega is yet to kick leather for Lions. Dickson Sakabutu was not part of the match day squad as he serves a 4 match suspension after receiving a red card in their game against Great Olympics.
Dickson Sakabatu Appiah, Lions
Jacob Esso was named in the starting line-up for Sporting Mirren and lasted the entire duration in their 1-0 home lost to Kpando Hearts of Lions. The midfield enforcer played against his senior brother Eric Esso who made a substitute appearance for Lions. Meanwhile, Festus Nutakor’s participation was only limited to the bench for Mirren.
Uncle T was treated to a Rosalinda dance by the Wonder Boys. Accra Great Olympics the newest relegated club held the league leaders to a 1-1 drawn game at Prampam. There was no action for Uncle T Striker Wisdom Attamah as he focuses on his tertiary exams. His participation in the league is expected after 23rd May 2018. This result means Lions have closed the gap at the top to 4 Points.
Striker Richard Dzikoe continued to show off his goal scoring form when he netted yet again for Kotoku Royals in their triumph over Akosombo Krystal Palace. Richard Dzikoe started the game for Kotoku Royals, lasted the entire duration in their 2-1 win in Akosombo. His goal brings his tally to 8. Meanwhile, attacking winger Stephen Kofi Nargy Agbo lasted the entire 90 minutes. Selorm Klutse was unused substitute.
Goalkeeper Daniel Aklamanu kept the post for Nania FC in their 1-0 narrow win over Tema Youth at the Legon Park. The young keeper continues to put in some sterlling performances this season. Daniel was a former player of Kpeve Lake United. There was no action for striker Perry Teh Agbo as he continues his recovery process.
Ali Idrissu missed Agbozume Weavers 0-0 home drawn game against Accra Young Wise. His absence was due to the head injury he sustained in their game against Akosombo Krystal Place.
Julius Brempong Ankamah was named in Accra Young Wise starting team. He lasted the entire duration of the game as his team drew 0-0 with Agbozume Weavers at the Somey Park in Agbozume.
Richard Amoah scored a sensational goal to help Accra Lions record a massive victory over Dandort FC. The goal is the midfielder’s second this season. Meanwhile, Fia Patrick and Benedict Wobenu all started in the game for the home team and lasted 90 minutes. The victory takes Accra Lions to the mid table.
Bright Hadzo continues his heroic performance in the National Division League. The goalie that currently plays for Wa Suntaa Sporting Club is yet to concede a goal in the 7 matches he kept the post for. Interesting as it may look, the young chap is on the verge of achieving something incredible. Bright Hadzo was the first name on the team sheet and lasted 90 minutes as Wa Suntaa Sc beat Nea Salamina 1-0.
Eric Esso (in no. 23 jersey)
Ghana (Premier League)
Asiwome Joy Fumador was not with the travelling Berekum Chelsea squad that drew 1-1 with Elmina Sharks in their outstanding premier league fixture at the Baba Yara stadium in Kumasi.
Prosper Dayegbe Ahiabu of WAFA was named in the starting line-up and helped the national U20 team attained a first leg 0-0 drawn game against Algeria in qualifying to the Africa Youth championship. Prosper is a midfielder and a regular element in WAFA’S play this season.
Prosper Atsu Avor former right back of kpando Hearts of Lions was in his usual role as his team Liberty Professionals narrowly lost 3-2 to Aduana Stars. Prosper played all league matches this season.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko striker Mawuli Osei’s future with the Porcupine Warriors is still uncertain as various media outlets suggests the player has failed to impress Kotoko after his signature was acquired.
There was no action for James Akaminko (Ash Gold), Joseph Esso (Accra Hearts OF Oak), and Ivan Kpeglo (Inter Allies) as the Premier league took a week break for outstanding matches to be cleared.
These are the players I kept my eyes on; help me discover other guys from the region making it big in football.
Farmers in three communities of Dafor Agorveme, Afawode and Volo in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region have expressed indignation at what they claim is unnecessary ceremony to hand over irrigation projects to the communities.
The residents, mostly farmers expressed their feelings at a ceremony at Dorfor Agorveme to officially hand over irrigation projects to the communities on Thursday, May 17, 2018.
The Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) irrigation scheme jointly funded by African Development Bank (AfDB), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), and Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), had been sited at Agorveme, Afawode and Volo to enable farmers there to engage in an all year round agriculture production to improve food security and reduce rural urban migration.
A durbar at Agorveme to hand over projects
According to the residents, the projects had been completed and handed over to the communities in August 2016, thus, did not see the reason for another handing over ceremony.
To them, what is needed is the repair of broken down parts of the project and reinstallation of stolen cables to get the facilities working because since the completion of the projects, they have not been put to use to benefit the residents in any way.
Secretary of Irrigation Farmers Association (IFA), also known as Water Users Association (WUA), Madam Grace Atta said members have never used the projects, citing, some faults detected at the facilities coupled with high expected cost of operation as reasons.
Regional Minister, Dr. Letsa (Centre), DCE, Mr. Arku (right)
Meanwhile, Regional Manager of Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), Joseph Nartey in response said, the Authority has taken note of the issues and promised to resolve them.
He however, charged the people to take responsibility of the projects and help in the arrest of individuals who engaged in stealing of cables at the sites and other activities to undermine the purpose of the project.
Inside of the pump house at Volo, North Tongu
An earlier inspection of the project sites by the Regional Minister, GIDA’s team, contractors, District Chief Executive for the area, farmer associations residents and the media revealed no farming activities at the irrigation facilities comprising pump houses, reservoirs and canals expected to water 41 developed hectares of land out of 65 at Agorveme, 20 hectares of land out of 74 at Afawode, and 47 out of 86 at Volo, at total costs of 2.4 million, 2.6 million and 1.4 million Ghana cedis respectively.
Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana (NETRIGHT) has urged the Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Forestry to push for the consolidation of the new Land bill to address systematic barriers that would enhance gender equality and social inclusion in land governance.
Similar, the civil society organization has underscored the need for policies in the agriculture sector to be responsive to gender.
Speaking on the sidelines of a round-table discussion in Ho on Tuesday, the Programme Manager of NETRIGHT, Ms Patricia Akakpo said, barriers to land acquisition, limited or no access to credit and lack of technology was affecting the growth of the sector and the quality of life for female farmers, hence should be appropriately addresed in the proposed land bill which is currently before parliament.
“NETRIGHT wants the gender inclusion issues in the provision should not be watered down, and some proposals that NETRIGHT have made to be included in the Land Bill should also be included.”
She indicated that, women who formed the majority of the workforce in the agriculture sector were faced with many challenges, a reason for embarking on nationwide round table discussions to raise awareness on the key issues on the land bill to solicit inputs from stakeholders, which would help tackle the challenges.
Some of the proposals raised by NETRIGHT Ghana included women’s right to land acquisition, land registration, gender consideration in staffing the customary lands secretariat and proper definition of gender and spouses.
The meeting brought together stakeholders from women rights advocate groups, traditional leaders, the media and legislators to discuss and make inputs into policy decisions on bridging gender gaps in the draft Land Bill.
The draft bill also takes into consideration ‘landguardism’, protection of Zongo lands, a direction on how foreigners could own land and protect the areas of common use like parks, as well as provisions to deal with spousal ownership of land.

Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mr. Kafui Kanyi who led the media at the meeting welcomed the initiative and promised on behalf of his members to be of support and urged the Committee to ensure the safety of journalists during the celebrations.

The Technical Economic advisor to the Vice President, Dr Samuel Kwadwo Frimpong, has said beneficiaries of the Nation Builders Corps (NaBCO) will be the first to be considered for government employment should there be employment opportunities in the public sector.
His assertion was based on the fact that they would have the required skills and experience needed in public service to implement the various government policies geared towards building a strong economy.
He urged graduates to take advantage of NaBCo to gain the needed skills and experience and position themselves for permanent employment in the future.
Dr. Frimpong addressing NASPA members
Government, he said, had initiated a lot of policies focused on creating jobs and building a robust economy which would require experience and skilful personnel to take over and implement them effectively.
Dr Frimpong was speaking to some national service persons in Ho during the launch of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) Ho Municipal maiden Excellence Award over the weekend.
The economic adviser, who was part of the team that developed the NaBCo concept, advised people to focus on the opportunity NaBCo offered and ignore detractors whose ambition was to direct focus on the modest stipend being paid to rubbish the programme.
Unemployment situation
According to him, the high rate of unemployment was negatively affecting the economy of the country and for that matter something ought to be done to address the issue.
‘Every year, we have about 60,000 graduates doing national service. Out of this figure, only 10 per cent get employment, leaving a chunk of 90 per cent to survive on their own’.
He said the unemployment situation was high because people were not patriotic and also were not interested in volunteerism.
