GHS Debunks Ebola Outbreak in Ghana

0

Ghana Health Service (GHS) has debunked claims of an outbreak of Ebola in the country and asked the citizenry to disregard reports circulating on various social media platforms suggesting that there is an outbreak of the disease and the Health Authorities are trying to suppress the information.

The social media reports purporting an outbreak in the country follow recent reports of an outbreak in north-western city of Mbandaka in Democratic Republic of Congo in which at least 45 people were believed to have been infected and 25 deaths being investigated.

The Service in a release signed by Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Director General of Ghana Health Service on May 21, 2018 assured the public that there is no outbreak of Ebola in the country.

It said Ghana is free of Ebola and the Service would be the first to inform Ghanaians in case there is any evidence of the disease.

“We want to state emphatically that the report is false and misleading and that there is no such incidence of Ebola in Ghana. Ebola is a highly infectious condition such that when there is an outbreak in a community there is no way the National Health System can keep it secret from the public. The Health System is part of the global community and mandated by International Health Regulation to report all such conditions if they occur.”

The release allayed fears of the outbreak here in Ghana and indicated, “surveillance system has been intensified including the Points of Entries to detect any case should it occur.”

Ebola is an infectious illness that causes internal bleeding and often proves fatal and can spread rapidly through contact with small amounts of bodily fluid, and its early flu-like symptoms are not always obvious.

Ebola was discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, the virus has emerged periodically from its natural reservoir (which remains unknown) and infected people in several African countries with latest outbreak ending in 2016.

Ho Harlem Falls to ‘After 7’ in Basketball Friendly

0

Ho Harlem Basketball Club has failed to clinch a home win against After 7 Basketball Club from Cantonments in a match played at the Ho Sports Stadium on Saturday, May 19, 2018.

The host, who had to merge both old and new players to play their guests, lost 53-55. The game really saw skills, tactics and wonderful throws within the 4 quarters.

The guests, being a swift attacking side, with excellent fast breaks got the first basket and were leading 15-10 at the end of the first quarter. Ho Harlem gave After 7 a good response in the second quarter, reducing their deficit to two (2) at 28-26. The visitors had to stretch the home side again in the third quarter with 6 points but Harlem fought back to reduce the points.

After 7 continued their dominance in the last quarter but signs of fatigue saw Ho Harlem fight really hard to end the game at 55-53.

The game between old Harlem and the current Harlem players ended 65-43 in favor of the latter. The curtain raiser sort of game saw the current players punish the oldies with pace and strength.

Another game was played between the Current Harlem players against a new set of After 7, which ended 35-31 for the home side. This match saw new set of Ho Harlem players and it concluded the day’s activities. It was however not much different from the main friendly game of the day.

Head Coach and player of the Oldies, Charles Gomadonku, spoke to TalksenseSports about the effect of the friendly against After 7.

“Playing ‘After 7’ is something that has given us a good experience. We knew how tough they were and prepared for them. Our performance wasn’t bad but I think if we had trained as a team for a while, we would have done better because the score line was close. Although they couldn’t get used to our rim faster, they got the win due to most of their player’s national team experience. We really had a good game and it has taught us a lot.”

This exercise has been a good one in terms of preparation towards the Sports Festival. Volta Basketball however plans for a Justifier, where teams from Ho, Akatsi, Sogakope, Kpando, Hohoe, and Aflao converge to select players for the Sports Festival.

Portions of the deteriorated Eastern Corridor road

The Vice President,  Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured that, the government of President Akufo-Addo will ensure the completion of the abandoned Eastern Corridor Road project, as an affirmation of the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to the people of the Volta region.

Dr. Bawumia speaking to Chiefs and elders of Gbi Traditional Area in the Hohoe Municipality on Saturday, May 19, 2018, averred that, the road was a measure of the NPP’s credibility, hence the government was working around the clock for work to resume  on the abandoned road network later this year.

According to him, the road is important to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and discussions have already started regarding the completion of the project.

“I am very confident that the work on the Eastern Corridor Road starts again sometime this year. We are very focused on it, the president mentioned it in the State of the Nation’s Address, Ministry of Roads is very aware of it and we believe that it is a road which really measures our credibility as a government that we have to deliver on Nana Addo’s promise. By the grace of God, we’ll do it before the end of this first term.”

Dr Bawumia’s assurance was in response to the appeal by Togbega Gabusu VI, Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Council for the completion of the road project when he and his entourage paid a courtesy call on Togbega at his palace at Hohoe as part of a day’s Ramadan Tour of the region.

Criminals Render Volo Irrigation scheme Idle

0

A GH¢1.4 million irrigation scheme at Volo in the North Tongu District in the Volta Region has been abandoned following activities of some criminals in the area.

The criminals have succeeded in stealing electricity cables which supplies power to the irrigation facility where water is tapped from the river (Volta) and pumped into a reservoir for irrigation purposes.

Irrigation facility

The facility, which was completed in August 2016 and partially handed over to the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), comprises a pumping station and a reservoir with 13 canals that can irrigate about 86 hectares of arable land.

The idle pump station

The other two irrigation projects in the area are the Agorveme and Afawode schemes constructed at a cost of GH¢ 2.4 and GH¢ 2.6 million respectively to promote an all year- round production of cereals such as rice and maize, as well as vegetables.

The three projects were funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) through a Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP).

Event

This came to light last Thursday when the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, together with officials of the GIDA, handed over the facilities to the beneficiary communities at a durbar at Dofor Agorveme.

He entreated the farmers, particularly the youth, to put the irrigation facilities to good use by increasing their production.

According to him, agriculture was a priority of the government, for which reason a number of interventions had been put in place to increase productivity and ensure food security in the country.

Arrest

The Regional Manager of GIDA, Mr Joseph Nartey, said some suspects involved in the theft had been arrested by the police and arraigned.

He added that the authority was in talks with the Electricity Company of Ghana to restore power supply to the facility for it to resume operations for the benefit of beneficiary farmers.
