Hon. Kudjoh Attah, District Chief Executive of North Dayi, has lamented about the inability of some Person’s With Disability (PWD’s) to fully apply for the right relief items to enable them become financially independent under the LEAP programme.
He noted that, some beneficiaries are unable to put into good use the equipment given to them because, they applied for the wrong equipment.
He said this when addressing a ceremony to hand over some equipment to PWD’s in the North Dayi District
He explained that, some members applied for refrigerators, fufu and corn processors whiles there is no electricity in their community or homes forcing them to either sell it or use it for storage or other purposes which does not achieve the purpose of the program.
He however advised PWDs to ensure that when applying for equipment they should always apply for the right equipment which is suitable for their environment and business idea to help develop themselves rather than applying for items they are unable to use.
The DCE has however assured that due to the challenges faced in the previous years, the application process has been reviewed to make it easy for members of the PWD group to apply and apply for the right support they need.
According to him the LEAP program has helped to empower and established lots of the PWDs in the district as some of them have also been able to employ abled persons into their businesses.
“In 2016, there were about 400 PWDs complaining of neglect but as at 2021 only about 50 of such people are complaining which is an indication that the LEAP program has positively affected the lives of the PWDs”
He added that, under his leadership since 2017 till date, about 70 percent of the PWDs are empowered under the LEAP program.
