Accused Enters Docket with Weed in Pocket

An accused put before the Hohoe Circuit Court for alleged possession of weapon without authority had his case compounded with a fresh charge of possessing an illegal substance suspected to be Indian hemp at the same court.

Kofi Amenyenu, aged 32 years is a trader cum farmer and a resident of Gbi-Wegbe in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.

On June 11, 2018 at about 9:00am, the accused who is facing a charge of illegal possession of firearm before Hohoe Circuit Court was called to open his defence.

His demeanor in the courtroom became suspicious and upon that the prosecutor, ASP Joseph Quainoo decided to search him. This led to a fierce struggle with the police for about ten minutes but with the assistance of two other police officers who are witnesses to the case, the accused was overpowered.

A search conducted on him instantly revealed quantity of plant materials suspected to be Indian hemp wrapped in a black polythene bag, an earpiece, a techno mobile phone, a box of matches and a cash amount of Gh₵135.00

The suspect was immediately sent to the Hohoe Police Office where a report was made. The plant material suspected to be Indian hemp was sealed in the presence of the accused along with an independent witness and would be forwarded to the forensic science laboratory in Accra for analytical examination and report.

The accused is now facing a charge of possessing narcotic substance without authority.

He is currently on remand at Kpando Prisons to reappear in court on Monday, August 6, 2018.
