The Electoral Commission has begun churning out certified results from Monday’s presidential elections more than 24-hours after close of polls.

The commission at a midnight press conference on Wednesday said it has received results from 14 out of the 16 regions of Ghana at its national collation centre but have so far certified seven of those results.

These are, Central, Oti, Ahafo, Volta, Bono, North East and Upper West regions.

Out of the seven, President Akufo-Addo of the NPP has so far won in four regions, namely, Central, Ahafo, Bono and North East Regions; while John Mahama of the NDC won in the other three regions of Oti, Volta and Upper West regions.

However, the cumulative votes of the 3 regions won by John Mahama puts him in the lead with a total of 1, 997, 450 votes, while President Akufo-Addo accumulated  1, 500,310 votes from the four regions. Leaving a margin of 497, 140 votes between the two.

The EC chairperson, madam Jean Mensah addressing the press conference said the commission was working with political party agents and other stakeholders to certify the results from remaining regions and declare the final result later on Wednesday.

Touching on the commission’s inability to declare the results in 24 hours as announced prior to the polls, Jean Mensa explained that they had to revise their schedule due to rains and other technical challenges that were recorded at some collation centres across the country but assured the process should be done and dusted by close of Wednesday.

Per the provisions of the 1992 constitution, a candidate in a presidential election requires more 50 per cent of vote cast to be duly elected as a president of Ghana.
