The South Tongu District Assembly in the Volta Region has awarded Sogakope Market Rehabilitation work project to an Accra-based company, MOHIB HIB Construction Company Limited for works to commence.

The District Development Facility (DDF)-funded project which is expected to be completed within six months at an estimated cost of GH¢242,800.00 is aimed at bringing relief to traders in the market whose  businesses had been affected negatively for decades due to the poor nature of the market.

The scope of work includes demolishing of make-shift market structures, metal containers and concrete platforms, water supply to existing elevated tank, rehabilitation of market sheds, painting of dwarf walls and changing of rotting fascia boards and also paving of an area of 2500m2.

Speaking on Monday, July 8 after signing the agreement, District Chief Executive (DCE) for South Tongu, Emmanuel Louis Agama, stated that the rehabilitation of the Sogakope Market would go a long way to boost the businesses of the traders and also open up the area for development.

Mr. Agama said he was once an assembly member and knew the challenges traders faced in the market and as a result, had decided to restructure the two major markets in the district, Sogakope and Dabala upon assuming the position of a DCE.

He explained that the Sogakope Market rehabilitation project was in three phases. The first phase would see to the installation of major gates around the market which had already been done. The second would have to do with pavement in the market to prevent the market from becoming muddy after rains while the third phase would have stores built in the market.

The DCE said the assembly was of the view that after the rehabilitation works, the two major markets would attract traders from far and near to patronise the markets in the district and appealed to the contractor to work hard to complete the project within schedule while advising residents of the district to cooperate with the contract for work to on.

The contractor, Bill Ben Mohib, on his part, promised to work with due diligence and assured traders and all key stakeholders of his commitment to complete the work within the stipulated time.

Some market women who spoke to Voltaonlinegh were excited about the project and prayed for its success.

The Sogakope Market Queen, Mama Azaglo thanked the assembly for their efforts and promised to provide the needed support for a successful completion of the project.
