Volta Regional Minister Attends 2026 CEANA Convention in Washington DC

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has joined a high‑level Ghanaian delegation at the 33rd Council of Ewe Associations of North America (CEANA) Convention, taking place in Washington DC from September 3 to 7, 2026, under the theme: “Preserving Our Culture, Inspiring Generations.”

He was accompanied by H.E. Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah‑Atokple, Volta Region member on the Council of State, Hon. Emmanuel Bedzrah, Member of Parliament for Ho West and Chairman of the Volta MPs Caucus, together with a number of MPs from the region.

Hon. Gunu described the convention as a privilege to engage with the Ewe diaspora on issues of development and progress of the Volta Region. He emphasized the diaspora’s role in driving investment, skills transfer, innovation and sustainable development, pledging to strengthen partnerships that create greater opportunities for the people both at home and abroad.

The 2026 CEANA Convention was officially launched in Ho, Ghana, in March at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). At the launch, CEANA President Mr. William Kumah called for stronger collaboration between the diaspora and local communities to advance development, particularly in healthcare and education across Eʋe Land.

Mr. Kumah, explained that CEANA is exploring partnerships across Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Europe to bring expertise and resources together to improve healthcare delivery and education. He highlighted a vision to transform UHAS into a centre for advanced medical research and treatment, especially in cancer care.

He noted that diseases affecting Africans often differ from those studied elsewhere, making local research critical. He stressed the need to build a future where quality healthcare can be accessed within the region, without the burden of traveling abroad. According to him, many patients are unable to afford overseas treatment, and delays in seeking care often result in avoidable deaths.

The CEANA Convention continues to serve as a rallying point for Ewe associations across North America, fostering unity, cultural pride and collaborative initiatives that benefit communities in Ghana and beyond.
