The senior national men’s Cricket Team have been crowned Champions of the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) T20 Africa Cup, North West Africa Qualifier after beating Nigeria in the finals at the Tafawa Balewa Square.
The current ICC World Africa T20 Champions brilliantly accomplished this feat by winning all 6 matches played in the competition from the preliminaries.
In the final game against the host nation on Sunday, April 29, Ghana won toss and opted to field with Julius Horlali Mensah who took 5 catches, named Man of the Match.
Nigeria, with revenge on their minds after losing thrice to Ghana on home soil, went all out and scored 109 runs, for 9 wickets. Ghana scored 110 runs, for 3 wickets in 16.2 overs and won by 7 wickets.
Ghana has thus beaten Nigeria 4 times within 2 weeks; twice in the ICC tournament and twice in the ACA tournament.
The ACA T20 tourney which began 2 days after the ICC competition wrapped up with a short closing ceremony and dinner at the Tafawa Balewa Square.
Chairperson of ACA, Jackie Janmohamed in her closing remarks congratulated all the teams for having a good tournament and exhibiting good sportsmanship. She urged all, to keep the spirit of the game high and raise the standard in Africa.
Ghana’s David Nii Ashong Ankrah was adjudged player of the tournament. He also won the best fielder Accolade. Simon Ateak won the Best Batsman Award, while Nigeria’s Felix Iteougu Chibuike was adjudged the Best Bowler.
Gambia’s Captain Mbaye Dumbuya received an Award for being the best behaved player. There were other Awards, which went to the Umpires, sponsors, Officials and players.
Ghana and Nigeria, have however qualified from the North West region for the upcoming ACA T20 Africa Cup at a yet to be named venue and date. The maiden ACA T20 Africa Cup which was launched in Nigeria (North West Africa) will have similar competitions in Eastern and Northern Africa.
