The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) in the Volta Region joined the rest of the world to commemorate this year’s marks Global Hand Washing day on the theme “Our Future is at Hand – Let’s Move Forward Together.”
The state agency, which is responsible for rural water and sanitation services in the country, as part of the global day observation, last Friday, October 15, embarked on public sensitisation drive on radio and some selected institutions, including schools across the region.
In Ho, officials of CWSA were engaged in a radio discussion on Global FM and later engaged with staff and students of Kabore School Complex.
They also donated a handwashing facility to the school and demonstrated to them, proper hand washing skills.
Speaking on the theme at the ceremony, the Human Resources Manager, Madam Sally Donkor said, over the years, research has proven that handwashing has been and will continue to be one of the most effective ways to prevent infections. Adding that, in this COVID-19 era, handwashing was by far one of the most important behaviours to adopt to stay safe.
‘As we enter a new normal, beyond COVID-19, our future is at hand.’
She noted that, this year’s theme was a call for coordinated action on the part of all stakeholders to actively work toward universal hand hygiene.
This call, madam Donkor indicated, CWSA was committed to, through the combined power of providing access to safe WASH services and promoting healthy behaviours.
During the radio engagement, the Regional Hydrogeologist, Mr. Benjamin Yeboah stated that, in line with SDG 6, which is, “access to clean water and sanitation for all”, the Agency was working hard to make sure, most rural communities have access to sustainable clean water.
According to him, “we can only cultivate the habit of hand washing when communities have access to clean water, hence the Agency is undergoing a reform to enhance management of Water systems in the communities which will in effect provide sustainable water to the rural communities in the region.”
On her part, the Assistant Extension Services Specialist, Madam Shallom Abla Lumor said, the global handle hygiene commemorations has been replicated across CWSA’s Water Systems in the Region, including Taviefe, Akatsi, Matse, Dzolo, Adidome, Mafi Kumase, Ziope, Akpokofe, Shia, Amedzofe, Adaklu, and Vakpo.
She noted that, since 2008, Global Handwashing Day has been celebrated annually on October 15 to promote handwashing with soap and water as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent disease and save lives.
“When handwashing with soap is practiced at key moments, such as after using the toilet or before eating, it can dramatically reduce the risk of diarrhea and pneumonia, which can cause serious illness and death. Handwashing with soap also helps prevent the spread of other infections and viruses including influenza and COVID-19.”
