The POS Foundation, main facilitators of ‘Justice for All’ programme, has appealed to the President to grant amnesty to petty drug offenders who are serving jail time for drug use in order to decongest the prisons in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Country’s Prisons.
Executive Director of the Foundation, Mr. Jonathan Osei Owusu made the appeal when they presented some Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Ho Central Prisons on Friday.
According to him, one of the ways to decongest the prisons is to grant amnesty to petty offenders who are in prison for drug use who, according to him, pose no danger to society but themselves, and as such urged the President of the Republic to act in that regard.
Items donated to the Prisons, include Nose masks, Gallon of Sanitizers, Veronica Buckets, Liquid soaps, toilet rolls, bags of sacket qater, and medical supplies – to be use in the infirmary which have been upgraded to a health centre.
Deputy Director of Prisons, Martin Darku who received the Items on behalf of inmates and officers was very appreciative of the gesture as it was timely.
Mr. Darku use the opportunity to appeal other benevolent organisations to come to their aid amidst the covid 19 as there is too much congestion in the Prisons.
He also appeal to POS Foundation to include the Ho Central Prisons onto the Virtual Court to assist remand prisoners get justice.
The Ho Central Prison was originally built to accommodate 150 inmates but currently accommode over 400 inmates.
