By: Nelson Ayivor | Voltaonlinegh |

Former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie has picked nomination form to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ketu South Constituency of the Volta Region.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, July 12 at the forecourt of the party’s constituency office at Aflao, Madam Gomashie said she considered her decision to represent the constituency in Parliament as divine because no woman had ever made it to Parliament from the southern part of the region.

The Deputy Minister in the Mahama Administration tipped to win the primaries by over 80 per cent of the constituents according to opinion polls conducted by an independent group (Scorpion Research), noted that “women have never represented us in Parliament, we need to change the narrative and inspire the young women to dare to be anything they want to be, we want them to look at what we have done and build upon it.”

Madam Gomashie (right) accompanied by scores of supporters

She observed that in other jurisdictions women occupied high public and political positions such as presidents and prime ministers hence, the need to empower women to aspire to greater heights adding, she was inspired by the fact that many young women considered her as their role model and that she would continue to play that same role even in Parliament.

She noted that having served in government and acquired some experiences from the 31st December Women’s Movement, she felt well positioned to join the competition to represent  the people adding,  there were some things a woman could do and do it well.

“I am convinced that I will win this election. I have no doubt in my mind that the people of this constituency believe in me and know that if given the opportunity, I will do the very best that I can.”

Madam Gomashie disclosed that during her tenure as Deputy Minister, she saw the difficulties and challenges she faced as opportunities to think outside the box and do something extraordinary saying that becoming a member of Parliament (MP) would put her directly in charge of the affairs of the constituency to take decisions that would inure to the benefit of the good people of the constituency.

She promised to abide by all the rules guiding the conduct of campaign activities ahead of the primaries, unite members of the party by running an all-inclusive campaign so that “we can work for the NDC to win the 2020 general elections”  and bring prosperity and development to the people.

Abdul-Iddrisu Faisel Writes: The Trajectory of Women’s Unwillingness to Accept Frontline Political Roles

0
Abdul-Iddrisu Faisel

In recent times, the call and advocacy for empowering women in political participation and leadership, has gained a considerable momentum, with civil society organizations (CSOs), leading the advocacy.

From the local and community level all the way to the highest levels of government, women are often underrepresented in leadership positions, left without a voice in decision-making and ignored as an electorate. Women hold only 22 percent of national parliamentary positions globally.

What it means is that women are underrepresented in all facets of the political process often due to socio-cultural barriers, the absence of training and resources for women’s political organizing, standards of living and precarious economic challenges; a situation many advocates find worrying and discriminatory.

Findings have revealed that the obstacles to the political participation of women span over the lack of public/social support and political party support, entrenched traditional views, to include lack of confidence, financial means, capacity building opportunities and access to technology, gender discrimination, division according to ethnic lines, violence, and intimidation.

Having established these obstacles, it is interesting to note that, lack of confidence on the part of our female counterparts to frontline political activities is one of most common reason for their failure in this regards. While there are rare cases of women wanting to actualise their political dreams on the African continent, the hard truth is that, a significant number of them simply lack the confidence.

My observation in the just ended SRC elections at the Evangelical Presbyterian University College, Ho is that, women in most cases prefer playing supporting roles when it comes to politics.

If we want women participation in politics, then of course, the best place to begin from is taking up the challenges of students’ leadership.

Prior to my picking of nominations to contest as the SRC President in the University, I set out a plan to pick a lady as a running mate (Vice President), something that has never happened in my school.

Initially, I thought the recent achievement by some female students in other tertiary institutions like the University of Development Studies and our own Ho Technical University, would have served a great motivation to the ladies in my University, but that was never to be.

I spoke to a number of outstanding ones who showed interest in the portfolio, but turned down my offer after a second thought.

At some point, I offered that a lady becomes a President, while I support as a running mate but that too would not be. The reasons given by each of the three ladies I contacted all boiled down to lack of confidence.

Each of them rejected the call on the ground that they would not be able to handle the pressure of the campaign and its attendant accusations. In simple terms, none of the three was ready to assume a frontline role.

At some point also, I pushed a number of them to contest as Women Commissioner, Secretary and Sports Representative, yet again, they would not indulge in politics.

Interestingly, each of them assured me of their readiness to support and campaign ‘behind the scenes’ for me. Though I found their positions worrying, I had to settle for it along the line.

When we finally began the campaign, each of the times I invited a lady to join me on our trails, I ended up being disappointed. They would come up with several excuses, just to dodge facing their colleague students and talking to them. I ran my campaign entering one class to the other, only in the company of my male supporters.

Behind the scenes, however, my female supporters did a great job. They carried the message and were able to convince a substantial number of their counterparts to support me.

At one point, one remarked that “all a man needs to win an election is the support of women and without that no man can win an election.” But the question is, are women prepared to take up the challenges of politics?

Let me state that, I won the elections, with the greater work being done by my female colleagues/supporters.

Along the line, during conversations I had with a number of them, 98 per cent of them were ready to serve on committees under the SRC -an agenda captured in my manifesto to ensure a gender balanced appointment onto the committees. But these are people who are not ready to become SRC President themselves.

For me, though the narratives are changing with quite a number of women accepting challenging leadership positions and roles in society, I believe a lot more needs to be done and the best place to start a conversation on  women empowerment and involvement in politics, is our tertiary institutions.

Society must endeavour to create equal opportunities for both men and women, and where necessary, put in some exceptions to be able to whip up the interest of women in assuming certain leadership roles.

It is high time our female counterparts realised that there is no ‘penis’ attached to politics.

It is therefore prudent we intensify this campaign to encourage and ensure both quantity and quality of women taking part in governance.

Studies have shown that increased women’s participation has resulted in a bigger economic benefit, increased cooperation across party lines and more sustainable conflict resolution. It is important to raise women’s engagement in politics by raising their awareness of opportunities available, building confidence and skills.

NGOs have been a very strong driving force behind the increase in the number of women in the political arena by linking local campaigns to global actions and trends.

While I observe that political parties are essential vehicles that could enable women’s participation in the political system, the real ground and a place for a start is students’ leadership.

I would be glad to see a female student as the next SRC President of my University.

The District Development Facility (DDF)-funded project which is expected to be completed within six months at an estimated cost of GH¢242,800.00 is aimed at bringing relief to traders in the market whose  businesses had been affected negatively for decades due to the poor nature of the market.

He explained that the Sogakope Market rehabilitation project was in three phases. The first phase would see to the installation of major gates around the market which had already been done. The second would have to do with pavement in the market to prevent the market from becoming muddy after rains while the third phase would have stores built in the market.

The DCE said the assembly was of the view that after the rehabilitation works, the two major markets would attract traders from far and near to patronise the markets in the district and appealed to the contractor to work hard to complete the project within schedule while advising residents of the district to cooperate with the contract for work to on.

The contractor, Bill Ben Mohib, on his part, promised to work with due diligence and assured traders and all key stakeholders of his commitment to complete the work within the stipulated time.

Hohoe MCE, Mr. Ofori (middle)

By: Ewoenam Kpodo | Voltaonlinegh.com |

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Hohoe in the Volta Region, Andrews Teddy Ofori has denied the claim of under-performance and other allegations leveled against him by a member of the assembly, Stephen Ahlidzi, describing it as “misleading, non-factual and untruth.”

Mr. Ofori said these claims by the Assemblyman were calculated attempts aimed at discrediting his person and the gains made by the Hohoe Municipal Assembly.

The Assembly member for Gbledi Electoral Area in the Hohoe Municipality, Stephen Ahlidzi on June 20, 2019, at a press meeting at Hohoe called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove Mr. Ofori over his incompetence.

Mr. Ahlidzi alleged that since the appointment of Mr. Ofori in 2017, there was nothing to boast of as an initiative of the Assembly and the MCE pointing to the Assembly’s heavy equipment being in disrepairs, bad roads scattering the Municipality, failure in forming the One District One Factory (1D1F) Committee and selection of factory types most suitable for the Municipality, and lack of transparency and accountability among others as reasons for demanding his removal.

However, the Assembly in a press conference addressed by the MCE on Tuesday, July 9 said the claims were mischievous and untrue saying, the assembly had achieved unprecedented feats in the 40 years of its existence.

According to Mr. Ofori, he took over the administration of the Assembly when it was performing poorly in the region and through dent of hard work and judicious use of resources, moved it to an “enviable position of number one among 25 municipal/district assemblies in the Volta and Oti regions for five consecutive times.”

The MCE among others, mentioned the tremendous improvement in the financial performance of the Assembly in 2018 which exceeded projected internally generated revenue of GH¢990,890.00 to GH¢1,008,427.35 representing 102 per cent, a performance “better than that of 2017, 2016, 2015 and years preceding 2014.”

He disclosed that the Assembly inherited debts from the previous administration which ought to be paid to enable construction works to go on in the municipality.

“Over twenty-four contracts were awarded towards the tail end of 2016 and which debts of GH¢3,099,706.20 we inherited and have used the past two years to pay.”

Mr. Ofori revealed that aside projects awarded by his predecessor, his administration had initiated projects including 10-seater WC with biogas for Hohoe E.P SHS, Akpafu Sec Tech School, Afadjato Sec Tech School and St Mary Seminary SHS, solar-powered borehole for Akpafu Sokpo, Fodome Agbesia and Likpe Alavanyo, CHPs Compound at Likpe Koforidua, which were at various levels of completion.

On roads, he said the Assembly reshaped a number of roads in the municipality adding, “selected roads would soon be constructed under the Sino Hydro Infrastructure Project Fund.”

The MCE assured that his administration would remain focused to implement policies of government to better the lives of his people and welcomed the Public Relations and Complaints Committee of the Assembly to investigate the allegations made against him to ascertain the truth.

I Never Lied about 1D1F Initiative in South Tongu-DCE

0
Mr. Agama, 3rd from right

By: Tabitha Kugbonu | Voltaonlinegh |

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for South Tongu in the Volta Region, Emmanuel Louis Agama has insisted that through the district assembly, a banana farm project was awarded to RADIKAL Ghana, an Indian company in line with government’s 1 District-1 Factory (1D1F) initiative.

Mr. Agama said he was not lying to the good people of the district when he said his administration had lobbied for development projects including the banana farm project to come to the district.

In October 2018, the DCE together with DCEs for Central Tongu and Ada East cut sod for the commencement of a 5,000-acre banana farm at Kpotame in the district aimed at giving employment to over 600 indigenous citizens for the first phase which would be mainly for export purposes. There was to be a second phase which would process the banana from the farm into chewing gum among others for local consumption and for export.

Meanwhile, almost a year later, nothing could be seen by the residents and this got most of them talking and wondering if indeed the project was really under the government’s flagship programme, the 1D1F especially when the company was wholly  private-owned.

The comments by the residents became even louder when the DCE during the Volta Regional Town Hall Meeting on Friday, June 28 at Ho Technical University, touted his tenure’s achievements in bringing development projects to the area and among other things, referred to the banana farm project.

In reaction, Mr. Agama told Voltaonlinegh that the project was a Public-Private Partnership and assured the people that work had already started on the land and called on those playing politics with the issue to stop.

He explained that the 1D1F did not mean that government would establish these factories but rather, it would partner with private entities and provide the enabling environment to facilitate the establishment of these factories just as the South Tongu District Assembly was providing support to the banana plantation by making it possible for a tractor to plough the land with pumping of water from the Volta Lake into the farm ongoing.

According to him, these activities had been facilitated by the assembly to ensure that the project came into being to provide jobs for the teeming youth in the area and said that was what the 1D1f initiative was all about.
