Prospective SHS Students to Choose Up to 11 Schools in 2023 Placement Exercise

0

BY: News Desk | Voltaonlinegh.com |

Prospective SHS students will now have the option to select as many as 11 Senior High/TVET schools during the 2023 computerised school selection and placement exercise,  Volta Online has gathered.

This marks a departure from the previous system, where each prospective student was entitled to select only six schools during the school selection exercises in previous years.

Sources familiar with the development have indicated that the Ghana Education Service and the Free SHS Secretariat are introducing this new school selection process to address challenges associated with self-placement and other issues that arise when placements are released.

Under the new arrangement, candidates who have recently completed the Basic Education Certificate Examination will be required to complete two sets of school selection forms. The first set will include their initial six school choices, while the second set will include an additional five school choices. This means that candidates will have a total of eleven schools to select, and these five additional choices must differ from the initial six.

Cape Coast based ATL FM reported that Katakyie Kwame Opoku Agyemang, the Free SHS Coordinator in the Central region, confirmed the new policy during an interview. He stated that JHS graduates will still select the same six schools as they did last year but are now required to choose an additional five schools, bringing the total to eleven. Importantly, the additional five schools must not overlap with the first set of six schools.

“In other words, one cannot choose the same schools in both sets,” the official stated. He also added that parents are expected to accompany their wards to their respective schools to be sensitised about the new school selection process.

Furthermore, the official confirmed that the timeline for the school selection exercise for prospective students will be from September 18 to 22, 2023.

BY: Daniel Orlando | Voltaonlinegh.com |

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has intensified public engagement in tertiary institutions across the country to engage, educate, and enforce laws that govern tariff adjustments and ensure consumers receive satisfactory service from service providers. As part of PURC’s engagement efforts, a lecture session on electricity and water tariff determination was held for tertiary students at Ho Technical University in Ho.

The primary objective of the lecture session was to provide insight and education to students and staff on utility tariffs and energy conservation.

The Executive Secretary, Dr. Ishmael Ackah, stated that the commission has a comprehensive approach to ensure accountability among players in the supply chain. His department has a tariff-setting process that consists of two windows: the Major Tariff Review (MTR) and the Quarterly Tariff Review (QTR) to establish a fair price for services provided to consumers.

Dr. Ackah explained that the Major Tariff Review involves assessing both operational and capital expenditures of the utility companies, which are benchmarked against all regulations and stakeholders’ submissions. Meanwhile, the Quarterly Tariff Review monitors the exchange rate and inflation.

Dr. Ishmael Ackah

He also engaged students in understanding how power and water supply are produced, transported, and distributed. He stressed the importance of the regulator ensuring an efficient and robust system to address inefficiencies from the service providers.

The students were introduced to the PURC Tariff Reckoner and the PURC Electricity Consumption Estimator (PECE) App, which enables consumers to monitor and calculate consumption rates.

A Senior Lecturer at Ho Technical University, Dr. Richard Akplotsi, expressed his enthusiasm about the Commission’s engagement with students regarding the pricing regime and factors considered in tariff adjustments. He called for a strong collaboration between the university and the commission to conduct more research on how to improve consumer satisfaction with services.

Coalition Cautions EC against Restricting Voter Registration to District Offices

BY: Lambert Coffie | Voltaonlinegh.com|

A group calling itself the ‘Coalition of District Assembly Assembly Aspirants’ (CODAA) has cautioned the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) against its intention to restrict the upcoming limited voter registration exercise to its District Offices.

The EC has set to conduct the limited voter registration exercise across all its 268 district offices from Tuesday, 12th September to Monday, 2nd October 2023,with the focus of registering some 1,350,000 during the period.

But at press briefing in  Ho, the national Convenor of CODAA, Mr. Mawunyo Agbe, who doubles as the Presiding Member of Ho Municipal Assembly, described the EC’s decision as an affront to  local governance.

He queried how prospective first-time voters – largely SHS graduates  would travel long distances to register for the voter I.D. card in their district capitals, amidst the current economic difficulties.

Mr. Agbe further questioned “What would motivate these young, first-time voters to take such a risk? Even so that, we all know the voter card now has no other use, aside for voting.”

The group, thus, want the exercise extended  to the electoral areas, in order to lessen the burden on first time applicants, and also  help whip up public interest in the upcoming District Level Elections, the intended purpose for the registration exercise.

Below is his full statement.

PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE COALITION OF DISTRICT ASSEMBLY ASPIRANTS (CODAA)

Good morning ladies and Gentlemen of the press, permit me to stand on all the exiting protocols established for the day. I am here on behalf of all members of CODAA across the length and breadth of the country to welcome you all to this all- important press conference.

Ladies and Gentlemen, on Thursday 17th August 2023, the Electoral Commission provided pieces of information on the upcoming voter registration exercise as well as the District Assembly Elections, and as part of the legal framework pursuant to regulation 2(1) of 2016(C.I.91) as amended, the electoral commission would embark on a voter’s registration exercise in all 268 district offices of the commission from Tuesday, September, 12 to Monday October,2, 2023 and hoping to register 1,350.000 new voters by the close of the registration exercise this year.

The COALITION views the above decision and notice by the EC as frivolous and one that falls short of promoting Local Governance in Ghana, especially in terms of participation in District Assembly elections by eligible voters.

Ladies and Gentlemen, permit, me to ask if it is not insensitive or absurd to demand from an 18year old who perhaps has just completed SHS to board a vehicle and embark on a 20 to 50 kilometers journey to the District Electoral Office to register for a voter ID card? Under this excruciating economy, what will be the motivation of these young first-time voters to take the risk? Friends from the media, let’s take Ho West for example, what will be the motivation for an eighteen-year-old to move to say, from Abutia Kisifli to Dzolo-Kpuita at a transport fare of not less than ghe 80.00 to go register to vote? Is it that the EC does not consider the district level elections as equally important as other elections that they mandated by law to organize and supervise?

Also consider such an 18-year-old as part of his or her additional responsibility to transport two additional guarantors to the district office. The COALITION believes all the above financial cost is absolutely needless.

The EC equally has no consideration for the loss of productive hours.

It is a well-known fact that, congestion often occurs at the various District centers especially taking into consideration the target of 1,350,000 it is seeking to achieve. A second look at the target set by the Electoral Commission seems already not feasible, because if it takes approximately 10 minutes on average to register one person within the 21 days period the Electoral Commission is seeking, to do this and with the above arrangement how possible can it be, for example, if there are two centers at each District and with an exercise billed to start from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (9hours daily).

A careful look at the exercise can only end in registering just about 900,000 persons which would be a 40% short of their set target. Ladies and Gentlemen, checks indicates that, participation level successive District Assembly Elections (DLE) are not encouraging, in 2019 November District Assembly election figures showed less than 40% turnout across the country, the above abysmal performance, we expect must be considered by the EC before arriving at its modalities, especially considering the decision of bringing to the District’s Office to register.

What is shocking is that, it has eluded the EC that registration if done at the various electoral areas whips up the enthusiasm in voters that districts assembly elections is beckoning and the only resultant effect in decentralizing the registration process only ends up massive participation.

Ladies and Gentlemen, with the above challenges enumerated, the COALITION demand that, the Electoral commission quickly change its position and deploy electoral materials to each Electoral Area to achieve the needed proximity by cutting down costs, wastage of man power, the associated risks and a decision that would also end up boosting participation across the length and breadth of the nation.

The District Level Election (DLE) in Ghana are essential part of the nation decentralized governance system and COALITION is bent on protecting and promoting it from the structural obstacles currently being deployed by the Electoral Commission of Ghana which would lead it to a total collapse.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the press the COALITION will consider other legal options should the EC refuses to change its stance.

Thank you all for coming.

BY: News Desk | Voltaonlinegh.com|

As part of the ‘Young and Safe’ Project in the Ho municipality, Love Aid Foundation, a member of the project consortium, has organized a stakeholders’ dialogue session on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) on Monday, August 28, 2023, in Ho.

The event brought together relevant stakeholders from Civil Society Organizations, Media, Government Agencies, and youth groups to deliberate on sexual and reproductive health concerns among young people.

Miss Princess Lovia Tetteh, Executive Director of Love Aid Foundation, in her welcome remarks, underscored the urgency of initiating discussions about SRHR, which, she noted, directly impacts the well-being of the youth on a daily basis. She emphasized the need for frank conversations on the subject to safeguard the lives of the younger generation.

Emmanuel Agbesi, Curriculum Developer with Love Aid, highlighted the role of stakeholders in guiding and counseling the youth, touching upon the importance of approachability and relevance. “It matters how we package our message and advice,” he stressed, stating the critical aspect of effective communication. He further highlighted the challenges faced by the youth, such as the surge in poor decision-making, the adverse impact of social media, and the weight of peer pressure.

Participants later held a breakout session to digest the SRHR curriculum and offer strategies to ensure an effective campaign on the subject matter. Among their proposals were making SRHR information sources accessible to young people and promoting discussions within households. In addition, they advocated for experts to intervene in schools and homes to reshape mindsets and educate parents on sexual and reproductive changes, among others.

Mr. Joshua Ayayi, Programmes Officer at Love Aid, took participants through the use of the GBV App – ‘Let’s Talk Ghana’ – to report sexual abuses and violence in real time for prompt action from authorities. The event concluded with assurances from all to work collaboratively in providing a safe environment for young people to thrive.

“The Young and Safe” Project is being implemented by a consortium of organizations including Node Eight as the lead, Ho Municipal Assembly, Ghana Education Service, and Love Aid Foundation. Over the course of three years, the project aims to build a “youth inclusive city” through youth participation in “City Governance,” Health and Wellbeing, and Sustainable Employment for young people in Ho.
