Government Scales Down 2025 Indece Day Celebration

The government has decided to scale down the grand celebration of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day anniversary due to economic constraints.

At a press briefing, Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu MP, announced that this year’s celebration will be held at the forecourt of the Jubilee House, instead of rotating among regional capitals.

According to Mr. Ofosu, the decision to suspend the rotational policy was made to save costs, as last year’s event alone cost the nation GH¢15 million, hence the government aims to prioritize responsible financial management while focusing on essential duties.

He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the rotational celebration of the Independence Anniversary across various regions, citing the need to cut costs.

The Regional-level celebrations have been cancelled, while celebrations at the District levels will be moderate and supervised by Regional Ministers.

There will be no parade or march past of security agencies and school children during the National Celebration, he added.

In addition, activities for the commemoration have been revised, with the 28th February Crossroads Shooting Incident to be commemorated, and the President’s Special Awards for Children to be presented.

A Guard of Honour will be mounted by the Security Agencies, and Cultural Performances and Recitals will be held as part of the celebration at the presidency, where the President will deliver a National Address.

Engineers at the Ghana Water Headworks in Kpeve have completed repairs on the broken-down pump that disrupted water supply to Ho and its environs for weeks.

A notice from the Regional office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) confirmed that the repair work was completed on Saturday evening, with supply being restored.

The pump, which broke down for the third time since January 2, has been restored, and water supply is expected to normalize soon.

The Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, had visited the plant last Monday with the Ag. Managing Director of Ghana Water to assess the situation.

To mitigate the effects of the water shortage, the Regional Minister arranged for water tanker services to critical institutions such as hospitals, schools, and prisons.

Residents, who had to rely on alternative sources of water, can now heave a sigh of relief as water supply is restored.

Ho Water Crisis: Tanker Services to be Extended to Critical Institutions

BY: Lambert Coffie | VoltaOnline

Critical institutions such as hospitals, schools, and other essential facilities in the regional capital, Ho, will receive emergency water supplies through tanker services, as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of the current water crisis in the area.

The decision, announced by the Regional Minister, James Gunu, would commence on Tuesday, February 4. This follows the recent shortage of potable water in the regional capital, resulting from frequent mechanical breakdown at the Kpeve Water Treatment Plant.

Addressing journalists before visiting the treatment plant on Monday, the Minister assured that his outfit would work assiduously with stakeholders to resolve the challenge and restore water supply to the affected areas as soon as possible.

“We understand the difficulties that the water crisis has imposed on our people, and we are committed to finding a lasting solution to the problem,” he said, adding that, “we are working to ensure that our hospitals, schools, and other critical institutions have access to water, despite the challenges we are facing.”

Meanwhile, the Minister has spent his first working day at the treatment plant, accompanied by the Ho Central Member of Parliament, Mr Edem Kpotosu, and the Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr Adam Mutawakilu, as well as other stakeholders to assess the situation on site.

It was discovered that the facility, which was designed to run on three pumps, was currently operating with only one pump, resulting in its frequent breakdown.

According to officials of the Ghana Water Company Limited, efforts are underway to resolve the issue, with an assurance of early completion to restore supply by the weekend.

To boost pressure, the MD has directed that two pumps be brought in from another substation. As a long-term solution, the Minister said the government was committed to expanding the water treatment facility to improve water supply to the catchment areas.

Since the beginning of the year, residents have been left without potable water supply due to the breakdown of the shaft, a situation that has left many scrambling for the commodity from various sources for their daily chores.
