By: Rita Kafui Nedjoh | Voltaonlinegh |

The Mental Health Unit of Peki Government Hospital in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region has graduated 16 young rehabilitated mental health clients with life skills to aid them financially.

The patients who graduated with a certificates and starter packs went through a nine-month training in mushroom farming, snail farming, and beads with slippers making under the mental health client rehabilitation project of the hospital’s mental health unit.

The mental health rehabilitation project is an initiative which seeks to develop the necessary emotional, social, vocational, financial and intellectual skills needed to live and learn in the community with least amount of professional help to ensure an effective reintegration of recovered clients into the society.

It is a collaborative effort of Peki Government Hospital and Ebenms Fungi Production with support from the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Peki.

Head of Mental Health Unit, Peki Government Hospital, Mercy Sitsofe Tettey noted that mental health “is no respecter of persons” hence the need to join hands together to explore the potentials of the youth masked by their mental disability momentarily for the development of society.

Madam Tettey said effective rehabilitation and reintegration of mental health clients ought to be a collective effort of health care providers, clients, care givers and the society to eradicate the mentality that mental disorder patients “are useless” in the development of the society.

She congratulated the beneficiaries and commended the various stakeholders and individuals who supported the project.

South Dayi District Director, Ghana Health Service, Patience Nunoo lamented the neglect of mental health patients by their relatives due to stigmatisation and the non-availability of facility to accommodate, rehabilitate and integrate them back into society.

Madam Nunoo decried the difficult situations under which mental health nurses in the district operated and mentioned the absence of motorbikes for defaulter tracing, risks in handling more aggressive clients, accommodation for mental health clients and staff and non-availability of free medicine as examples.

She disclosed that the district from 2017 to the first quarter of 2019 had recovered and managed a total of 1,658 mental health cases, 330 vagrants, 159 defaulters and 201 relapse due to non-compliance, refusal to turn up for revisit and unavailability of free medicine.

She therefore called on the Member of Parliament for the area, philanthropists and individuals to help sustain the project to aid the reintegration of mental health patients into society.

Executive Director, Ebenms Fungi Production and trainer of the beneficiaries, Togbe Dzempe II of Takla Traditional Area commended the hospital for making the dreams of his foundation possible.

Togbe Dzempe noted that Ebenms Fungi Production is an incorporated company involved in the production of mushroom, ‘shito’ with mushroom base, honey production and snail farming.

He called on individuals and organisations to support the course with material and financial resources to help the foundation reach out to more of the less-privileged in society.

MTN Urges Subscribers to Report MoMo Fraud Cases Promptly for Redress

By: Voltaonlinegh |

Volta Regional Team Lead of telecoms giants, MTN Ghana, Mawuli Katahena has implored the general public especially subscribers of the company’s 10-year old mobile money (MoMo) service to timely report any irregularities in their transactions to forestall losing their monies.

Mr. Katahena said there had been instances when MTN had saved people by restoring their monies to them, blocking accounts of customers who had defrauded unsuspecting people, etc because they (victims) called the company’s toll free number 100 on time.

“Any time you mistakenly send money to a wrong number, someone tricks you to send money to his/her account, quickly call 100. We’ll reverse the transaction or block the account and you’ll get your money in 48 hours.”

He underscored the need for reporting the cases on time saying, any delay could give the other person(s) chance to go ahead and withdraw the money in which case MTN would be unable to block the account for any reversal to be made.

He made this known at a community interactive programme dubbed community forum which came off on October 1 at the Ho Central in the Volta Region’s capital.

Tuesday’s forum drew a cross-section of the public including traders, transport operators, dressmakers, beauticians and tertiary students for interactions on MTN’s investment in community development and its products and services.

Mr. Katahena also spoke to the participants about the recently increased Communication Service Tax (CST) from 6 per cent to 9 per cent (effective October 1) explaining, it would be applied to every recharge purchased such that “if you recharge GH¢1.00, a 9 per cent CST fee of GH¢0.07 will be charged leaving  you with GHS0.93.”.

Head, Ho branch office, MTN, Mawunya Agogo mentioned some life-changing projects MTN had under its social responsibility wing, MTN Ghana Foundation, initiated in the region  in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment.

Mr. Agogo disclosed the region had witnessed many of such projects because of its contribution (loyalty) towards MTN’s success story in the country which the company “appreciates a lot.”

Corporate Services Advisor for Southern Ghana, Kennedy Ofosuhene told Voltaonlinegh that the event, the second of its kind in Ho and the third in the region, “is one of our strategies to get closer to our stakeholders, tell them what we are doing especially, the investments we are making to enrich their lives, the products and services we’re modifying and bringing out new ones and also ensuring that we serve them better.”

The participants were grateful for the interaction which they claimed clarified a lot of issues for them especially issues regarding MoMo transactions and fraud.

By: JAB | Voltaonlinegh |

About a thousand children at Peki in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region are to benefit from free healthcare under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on Saturday, October 5.

The exercise being championed by Miss Gbi 2018, Florence Makafui Allavi with support from South Dayi office of National Health Insurance would ensure that the beneficiaries benefit from free basic healthcare.

Ms. Allavi who won the crown during the 2018 Gbidukor (Gbi State) Festival of the chiefs and people of Peki and Hohoe said the pageant gave her the opportunity “to go out there to solicit support to help children access healthcare.”

“I find it disheartening when children are denied basic healthcare because they are not registered on the National Health Insurance Scheme. So I am excited that we will get to register up to 1,000 children in the Peki area,” she added.

The beauty queen would also use her platform in getting women to undergo free breast care education and breast cancer screening in the Peki community as part of breast cancer awareness month.

The 23 year old indicated lack of knowledge on the subject as a motivating factor in embarking on the exercise.

According to her, “I have witnessed cases that ended up at prayer camps because it was thought to be spiritual. So this is so very important, I hope future queens will also focus on this area to ensure that knowledge on breast care and breast cancer becomes a household thing within Gbidukor and by extension the country.”

The exercise being undertaken with support from Peki Government Hospital and Peki Queen-mothers Association is an initiative borne in collaboration with Hohoe-based youth group, 2H City Connect and Gbidukor.

The two activities set to take place on the 1911 Park in Peki Blengo forms part of Miss Allavi’s projects as the reigning Miss Gbi who had already conducted similar exercise in Gbi (Hohoe) earlier in July.

The Miss Gbi pageant is held during the annual Gbidukor Festival (Gbidukorza) celebration which was instituted some 24 years ago.

Gbidukor is made up of two traditional areas; Gbi (Hohoe) and Peki with Hohoe area referred to as Gbidzigbe or Gbi north and Peki area, Gbinyigbe or Gbi south.

The 2019 Gbidukorza is scheduled to take place in Peki from Friday, 6th to Monday, 9th December, 2019 on the theme “Promoting Health and Safety Standards, Our Shared Responsibility”.

Increased ‘Talk Tax’, Utility Tariffs Take Effect Today

0

By: KALD | Voltaonlinegh.com |

Two major consumer tax and tariffs are set to go up effective today, October 1, 2019 following their upward reviews.

The recently increased Communication Service Tax  (CST) from 6 to 9 per cent, and the about 8 per cent total increment  in both electricity and water tariffs,  would see  consumers pay extra more for these services, which are essential to every day life.

According to the  Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, the CST which was reviewed upwards in the 2019 mid year budget, would be applied to every recharge purchase.

With Communication Service Tax now increased from 6%,  9%  CST will be applied to any recharge purchase.

So for every GH¢1 of recharge purchased, a 9% CST fee of GHS 0.07 will be charged leaving GHS0.93 (not GHS0.91)  for purchase of products and services,” the Chamber explained in a Facebook post on how the tax will be charged by the telecom service providers.

This, means the telecom operators would  deduct  and pay to the Ghana Revenue Authority, 7 pessewas, representing the 9 per cent CST on every GHs1 of airtime bought, leaving consumers with GHs 0.93 to buy products and services such as data and call bundles.

Prior to today’s implementation, three of the telecom operators,  MTN, Vodafone and Airtel Tigo have  in the past weeks sent SMS communication to their subscribers regarding the coming into effect of the revised CST from October 1, 2019.

Utility Tariffs

Similarly, consumers would from today also pay 5.94 and 2.22 per cents more respectively  for  electricity and water, following a recent  review of tariffs by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC).

This is a second tariff increment in three months, which according to a statement from the utility regular was done using  the Automatic Adjustment Formula  (AAF), taking into consideration various variables including the exchange and inflation rates.
