Keta-Anloga Municipalities Inaugurate Inter-Party Dialogue Committee

Two Directors of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Keta and Anloga Municipalities, Mrs. Lina Bensah and Mr. Godwin Agbenyo, respectively have  inaugurated an inter-party dialogue committee to ensure that the upcoming Ghana’s general elections runs free and fairly.

The move, according to them, will help unite the political parties, security experts, the media as well as other stakeholders in the Municipality to drive at recording peaceful, free and fair elections.

Torgbui James Ocloo V, the Dufia of Keta and the Chairman for the Committee, said he will work to ensure all stakeholders play integral roles toward achieving the aims of the Committee.

He however called on the leaders of the political parties to avoid all manner of violence and abuse during the elections.

He also urged the Police, the BNI and the Media to work unanimously so as to maintain peace and order in the upcoming elections.

Reverend Noble Kukubor, a representative from the Local Council of Churches, also reiterated the need to ensure peace before and during the elections.

He said, the Local Council of Churches, have also taken strides to put peace messages across through few activities they have organized.

Three Victims of Ho Gas station Fire Dead [Update]

At least three victims of last week’s fire outbreak at the Mighty Gas filling station in Ho have died, information reaching Volta Online indicates.

The victims, two males and  a female reportedly gave up their ghosts on Saturday and Tuesday respectively at the Ho Teaching Hospital, where they were receiving treatment with 12 others for injuries sustained in a fire that swept through some vehicles at the Gas station last Wednesday dawn.

A source close to the family the decease woman told Volta online that, the mother of three was at the filling station that morning to buy LPG for her bakery business when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The swift response of personnel of the Ghana National Fire to the incident at the time, curtailed the fire from escalating and resulting a major disaster.

Meanwhile, Volta Online understands two of the victims who are critical condition have been transferred to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, while the rest are responding to treatment at the Teaching Hospital.

For Immediate Release

Date:  November 11, 2020.

This statement is to confirm that indeed there was an incident at the LPG filling point at the Mighty Gas station in Ho, near the Ho Teaching Hospital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning of Wednesday November, 11, 2020 at about 5:10am.

The cause of the explosion which injured a few persons, both staff and customers is unknown.

The fire which was restricted to the gas filling point alone due to the safety system put in place by the company was quickly curtailed by the fire service.

The few casualties are currently receiving treatment at the Ho Teaching Hospital and no deaths recorded.

Please note that the cause of the accident is currently unknown and still under investigation by the Ghana Fire Service. Mighty Gas is cooperating with the fire service and other regulatory bodies to ensure a thorough investigation.

Our sincerest sympathies to all injured and the general public of this sad event. We wish casualties a speedy recovery. To ensure continues safety of both staff and customers, the Gas station is closed temporarily to allow for thorough assessment, repairs and improvements.

The general public will be informed of any developments that comes up

Assemblyman Accuses MCE, Others over Neglect

The Assembly Member for Keta Central electoral area, Hon James Ocloo Akorli has registered his displeasure regarding neglect from some officials in the Municipal Assembly.

Mr. Akorli, disclosed that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Godwin Edudzi Effah and those in charge of environmental health in the Municipality have sidelined him during a fumigation exercise held in the Keta market which is under his jurisdiction.

He explained that, he was unhappy to hear that some activities have been carried out in his electoral area without any notification to his office.

Hon. Akorli also stated that, he has been an active player when it comes to the electoral area hence should not be exempted in such an important and crucial exercises.

He however said, measures are underway to get the MCE into few discussions to address the issue.

Keta EC Boss Calls for Calm Ahead of December Polls

The Keta Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr.  Philip Adzomadi has called on the youth to desist from any act of violence before, during and after the December 7 general elections.

This follows several engagements with the media and some security experts in the Keta Municipality to deliberate on measures to ensuring free and fair elections.

Mr. Adzomadi, indicated that some youth have always been initiated into acts of violence during elections, adding that in the course of these, some have been apprehended by the police.

He therefore urged the youth to avoid acts of violence during the election.

He also called on the police and the media to be on guard against any form of violence and election malpractices.

Volta NDC to Visit Rawlings’ Dzelukorpe Family

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta region has scheduled Wednesday, November 18, 2020 to visit the Late former President Jerry John Rawlings’ hometown Dzelukope to commiserate with the family in line with the Ewe culture and  Anlo tradition.

In a statement signed by the Regional Secretary, James GUNU, the secretariat is shocked and devastated by the sad news of the passing of H.E. Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings hence the suspension of all campaign activities in the region by the party.

According to the Statement, Former President Jerry John Rawlings was a grassroots man, legend, great asset, and a charismatic leader with vision who founded our NDC on probity, accountability and social justice.

As part of activities outlined by the Regional Secretariat, All Regional Executives, Members of the Political Committee and Council of Elders have since been deployed to the constituencies to hold emergency meetings to officially inform them about the untimely departure of our founder. The Constituency Executives shall do same at the branch and community levels.

they said, there shall be a Media briefing and opening of book of condolence at the Regional Secretariat Today, Monday, November 16th, 2020, Memorial walks at all levels of the party structure and Regional Vigil at the Jubilee Park, Ho on Thursday, November 19th, 2020 at 6:00pm.

They also noted that, as part of his (Former Prez Rawlings) commitment to inclusiveness, the Regional Zongo Caucus in collaboration with the Regional Secretariat will organise special Muslim prayers in Kpando, Hohoe, Aflao and other zongo communities starting Monday, November 16th, 2020.

The statement further  entreated all rank and file of the umbrella party to participate in all the activities.

Signing of Former Prez Rawlings’ Book of Condolence begins Today

As part of a week long national mourning declared by the state for the Late Former President Jerry John Rawlings, a book of condolence has been opened for Government officials, state institutions and the public starting from today, Monday, 16th November to Friday, November 20, 2020.

In a statement signed by  Nana Enoch Osei-Mensah, Head of Protocol at the office of the Vice President and the Moderator of the signing of the book of condolences, there will be a schedule for the entire process due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The exercise, according to the statement will take place at the Foyer of the Accra International Conference center from 9am to 5pm daily.

The statement has therefore attached the schedule list to assist the general public to get abreast with the processes so as to bring decorum to the entire 5 day activity.

FDA Reacts to “#The Return Bribe” story

The Food and drugs authority (FDA) has issued a statement regarding corruption and bribery allegation leveled against some staff of the authority.

The release came at a time when the Joy new documentary titled #The Return Bribe is scheduled to be aired regarding the alleged scandal in the authority by the multimedia group.

In the statement signed by the board Chairman of the authority, Sammy Ohene (Dr.), the matter came to the attention of the authority in April, 2020 and they are doing their best to see that the right procedures are followed to see to the finality of the allegations.

According to the statement, the authority urged the public to allow the National Security as well as committees instituted by the authority to conduct and complete investigation into the allegations.

He reiterated the authority’s zero tolerance for bribery and corruption and reaffirms its commitment to protect the health and well-being of consumers.

THE RETURN BRIBE DOCUMENTARY

In the Joy News documentary, it was alleged that the CEO of the FDA, Mrs Delese Mimi Darko, through the head of Legal Affairs at the FDA, Cynthia Dapaah Ntow, demanded $100,000 from the manufacturer of COA-FS to enable him continue selling his product.

An amount of GH₵600,000 was allegedly given to the head of Legal Affairs at the FDA as bribe, according to the documentary.

Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli state has lost his re-election bid as the President of the National House of Chiefs.

He lost to Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional area in the Western North Region.

Togbe Afede polled 25 votes as against Ogyeahohoo’s 47 votes at the election held on Thursday at the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi.

Paramount Chief of Lawra Traditional Area in the Upper West Region, Naa Puowele Karbo III also won the Vice-Presidential slot with 44 votes, beating competition from Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, Paramount Chief of Abeadze Traditional Area, who had 28 votes.

Prior to the voting, there was confusion over a court order barring some seven chiefs from partaking in the exercise.

Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II was the immediate past the President of the Western Region House of Chiefs.

Just In: J.J Rawlings Dead

Ghana’s longest serving Head of State, Former President Jerry John Rawlings is reported dead. He is said to have passed at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a short illness on Thursday.

The 73-year old former military ruler, in October this year buried his mother, Victoria Agbotui, who died at the age of 101.

Information gathered by Volta Online revealed Mr. Rawlings has been unwell after the burial of his mother on October 24 and has been on admission at Korle-Bu in the last one week.

Bishop Fianu Appointed Board Member of National Peace Council

The Catholic Bishop of Ho, Most Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu SVD, has been named with 12 other eminent persons as members of the re-constituted Governing board of National Peace Council, which was inaugurated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last Tuesday.

The new board chaired by Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, from the Christian Council of Ghana, has the following as members;

    • Reverend Professor Paul Frimpong-Manso – Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC),
    • Nana S.K.B Asante – National House of Chiefs (NHC),
    • Alhaji Mualvi Mohammed Bin Salih – Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission (AMM),
    • Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD – Ghana Catholic Bishop Conference (GCBC),
    • Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams – National Council for Christian and Charismatic Churches (NCCCC).

President Akufo-Addo in a brief remark, tasked the board members to employ appropriate strategies that will help in maintaining the peace and stability of the nation before, during, and after the December 7th Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

“The National Peace Council has become a point of reference for addressing various conflict situations in Ghana and particularly election related conflicts.

“So I charge you, members of the newly constituted board to continue the good work done by your predecessors and employ the most appropriate strategies that will continue to contribute to sustain the peace beyond the 2020 elections. You are a distinguished and eminent group of Ghanaians who the nation expects to be up to the task.”

In a response, Chairman of the Council, Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi assured the President and the people of Ghana that the board will do the best it can to maintain the peace of the country.
