North Dayi District Calls for Investors in Kaolin Mining to Boost Local Economy and Job Market

The North Dayi District Assembly has called on potential investors to visit and invest in the district, particularly in the area of kaolin mining to produce in large quantities.

Exploiting kaolin mining, according to the district, will help the ceramic and paint industry, providing jobs and income for the local population.

The main agricultural products from the district are rice, coconut, and mango. Tourist attractions include beach resorts, the crocodile cave, and a 345-step staircase linking Anfoega Azigbe and Anfoega Agata and Agatanyigbe.

Hon. Edmond Kudjoe Attah, the District Chief Executive, speaking with Volta Online, stated that the assembly has established a strong relationship with traditional authorities and other stakeholders to promote peaceful coexistence.

“These collaborative efforts aim to establish an ecosystem of success and increase investor confidence,” he added.

The DCE mentioned that through the Volta Fair, the district is poised for incredible growth, progress, unlocking its full potential, creating jobs, and driving the local economy.

Horticulture Industry Urged to Keep Proper Records for Access to Financial Support

The Executive Secretary of Green Label Ghana Foundation, Mr. Anthony Tamakloe, has urged players in the horticulture industry to maintain accurate records of operational and financial transactions in order to secure grants and loans from financial institutions.

Mr. Tamakloe emphasized that the key to obtaining loans and grants from any financial institution is through proper record-keeping, which serves as a guide to assess the lender’s eligibility criteria. He made these remarks during a Horticulture workshop held as part of the Volta Trade and Investment, with the theme “Leveraging Horticulture to Access the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.”

The workshop convened farmers’ groups, individuals, and organizations to discuss the opportunities presented by the Africa Continental Free Trade Area. Mr. Tamakloe appealed to all participants to maintain transparency with financial institutions supporting their businesses.

Additionally, he encouraged farmers to seek financial assistance from commercial banks offering moderate interest rates and explore other sources such as USAID – Ghana Trade and Investment and USAID Africa Trade and Investment grants.

Mr. Abdul-Ramakrishna Adama, the Operations Manager of Maphlix Trust Ghana Limited, highlighted the immense export potential of horticultural produce from Ghana to the European Union and other markets. Abdul Razak Adama emphasized the favorable climate conditions in Ghana, facilitating year-round production of fruits, including mangoes, pineapples, and vegetables.

Mr. Adama called for stringent measures to improve transportation, storage facilities, and cold chain management to maintain product freshness during transit.

Mr. Fred Avornyo, Chief Operating Officer of Volta, stated that the horticulture workshop aimed to educate farmers and farmer groups about the prospects in the horticulture industry. He also emphasized the importance of joining horticulture business platforms to facilitate the easy transport of their products into the European market.

Volta Youth Entrepreneurs Summit Champions Pan-African Collaboration

The second edition of the Volta Youth Entrepreneurs Summit was held in Ho, over the weekend as part of the 6th Volta Trade and Investment Fair 2023. It broughtĀ  together aspiring entrepreneurs, small business owners, and notable figures in the business community to deliberate on the opportunities and challenges faced by young enterprises in the region.

Addressing the attendees, Ms. Emma Theofelus, Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of ICT and Technology from Namibia,Ā  encouraged young entrepreneurs to cultivate new networks and foster collaboration with like-minded individuals in the business sphere. She emphasised the importance of cooperation over competition, asserting that collective efforts can shape the future of business in the region.

The Deputy Minister highlighted the significant role played by the youth of Africa in answering the generational call, urging them to establish businesses that transcend borders and contribute to the continent’s economic growth.

Ms. Theofelus also revealed the commitment of the Namibian government to partner with young entrepreneurs in sectors such as shea butter, coffee, cocoa, and other agricultural products.

In a special appeal to African leaders, Ms. Theofelus called for a re-evaluation of the continent’s educational curriculum. She advocated for reforms that would shift the focus towards entrepreneurship, aligning with the vision of building a business-centric Africa.

Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister and an accomplished entrepreneur, provided valuable insights to the aspiring business leaders. He advised young entrepreneurs to set ambitious yet realistic goals when venturing into business, underlining the pivotal role of entrepreneurship in driving the economic fortunes of the country.

Themed “Bridging Borders: Amplifying Youth Entrepreneurship in the AfCFTA Era,” the 2nd Volta Young Entrepreneurs SummitĀ  ended successfullyĀ  with a renewed commitment to collaboration, entrepreneurship, and the economic empowerment of the youth in the region.

Ghana Targets Over GHc25.3 Billion Export Revenue by 2029

The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has organized a one-day workshop for exporters in the Volta Region, focusing on strategies to expand the countryā€™s export sector.

At the core of the discussions was the ambitious vision outlined in the National Export Development Strategy (NEDS), aimed at propelling the growth of Non-Traditional Exports (NTEs) from a modest GHS 2.8 billion in 2020 to an impressive GHS 25.3 billion by 2029.

Speaking at the workshop held in Ho on Thursday, 30th November 2023, Mr. Charles Darling Asiedu Sey, the Tema Branch Manager of the GSA, underscored the collaborative effort required to turn the vision into reality. He stressed the need for innovative solutions and a steadfast commitment to creating an environment conducive to international business growth, hinged on structural transformation to position Ghana as a formidable export-led industrialized economy.

To ensure sustainable export shipping practices in Ghana, Mr. Sey highlighted critical areas that demand collaborative attention, such as Customs (GRA) rules, warehousing, forwarding processes, and financial considerations. He also revealed ongoing partnerships with service providers to enhance the quality of shipping services.

“Efforts are underway to review export-related policies, simplify procedures, reduce bureaucracy, and foster a more favorable business environment,” he stated, further emphasising the importance of harnessing the full benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which commenced in January 2021.

“To fully harness the benefits of this agreement, it is essential to empower and strategically position Ghanaian exporters. This necessitates the adoption of a comprehensive approach that addresses the needed policies, regulations, and practices. Such an approach is crucial for unlocking the full economic potential and ensuring successful integration into the broader African trade landscape facilitated by AfCFTA.”

The seminar also featured a presentation by Mr. Paul Kobina Mensah, the CEO of Mass Logistics, on the ‘Planning, to reduce the cost of export shipments’. He shared valuable insights on various strategies for successful export businesses, further contributing to the collective effort to elevate Ghana’s export sector to new heights.

67-Year-Old Queen Crowned Best Farmer in Agortime-Ziope District

In a remarkable celebration of the 39th Farmers’ Day on December 1, Mama Wosife V, the Queen Mother of Lotsukorfe near Agortime Wodome in the Agortime Ziope District, has been honoured as the overall best farmer for 2023.

Agricultural Extension Officers in the district revealed that Mama Wosife has dedicated 16 years to farming in the Akpokorfe community. Her outstanding commitment is evident in her cultivation of 30 acres of Maize, 7 acres of Tomatoes, 3 acres of Okro and Cassava, 1.5 acres of Yam, 2 acres of Pepper, and 5 acres of Sweet Potato. Additionally, the Queen tends to 25 Goats, 6 sheep, and 42 fowls on her farmland, where she resides with her two children.

For her exceptional efforts, Mama Wosife received a bounty of prizes, including a 43-inch Television Set, 4 Spraying Machines, 8 cutlasses, 4 Wellington boots, and 10 Weedicides. She also earned a double bed mattress with 2 pillows, securing her position as the overall best farmer in the district.

The Agortime Ziope District acknowledged a total of seven farmers and officers for their outstanding contributions. Mr. Yao Keteku from Sileandre was named the best youth farmer, Mr. Midao Ekpo from Wuvi received recognition as the best Extension collaborator, and Mr. Ahiale Kwadzo Believer emerged as the most enterprising farmer. The title of overall best animal farmer was bestowed upon Mr. David Dogbe Kwashie.

Other awardees include, Madam Beatrice De-Gualle from Tsavanye – overall best crop farmer, and Mr. Stanley Dagadu – Best Agricultural Extension Agent in the district. Both received a 32-inch TV set and essential farming inputs, including Spraying Machines, Cutlasses, Wellington boots, and Weedicides.

Expressing gratitude, Madam Emilia Emefa Adzimah, the Agortime Ziope District Chief Executive, acknowledged the pivotal role of farmers as the soul of the nation. She extended warm greetings and appreciation to all farmers in the district, referring to them as national heroes. She emphasized the importance of recognising and valuing the contributions of farmers to national development.

The District Chief Executive also urged farmers, particularly the youth, to leverage the government’s Phase II of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme. This initiative aims to enhance the socio-economic status of farmers and further support agricultural development in the district.

Ziope Chief Calls For Action on Deplorable Road Network to Tackle Post-Harvest Losses

The Paramount Chief of Ziope Traditional Area, Togbe Lawluvi VII, has voiced his concerns over the deplorable state of road networks in the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta region, particularly in Ziope.

Speaking at the 39th District Farmers Day celebration held at Takuve, a farming community, Togbe Lawluvi highlighted the adverse impact of these road conditions on local farmers, leading to annual post-harvest losses in their tomato farms.

Emphasising the vulnerability of the highly perishable tomatoes, a staple crop for Ziope, Togbe Lawluvi called attention to the urgent need for road development. He announced plans for the traditional council to engage with the district assembly in the coming year to address this issue, specifically focusing on upgrading feeder roads crucial for facilitating farmers in the area.

Addressing the gathering, Togbe Lawluvi urged farmers to embrace modern technologies to enhance farming practices. He also called for the revival of the Tomatoes factory in the Agortime-Ziope district, citing the need for increased food supply and the importance of commemorating Farmers Day in the region.

In line with the celebration’s theme, “Deliver Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience,” Togbe Lawluvi criticised existing agricultural policies, noting their preference for large-scale farmers. He underscored the ineffectiveness of such policies for small-scale farmers, urging the government to ensure proper implementation and enforcement.

Mr. Mawuli Abusa, the District Agric Director, provided insights into the district’s efforts to address post-harvest losses. He revealed plans for a cold chain facility, in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), to add value to tomato production. Mr. Abusa highlighted the role of the second phase of the president’s flagship program, Planting for Food and Jobs, in promoting food security, export, and job creation.

The District Chief Executive, Madam Emilia Emefa Adzimah, stressed the need for allocating attention and resources to the agriculture sector. She emphasized the application of necessary technologies to ensure year-round food production and prevent post-harvest losses, contributing to overall food security within the district and the country.

Madam Adzimah further addressed environmental concerns, urging residents to avoid perennial bush burning. With support from the World Bank through the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP), she highlighted the district’s initiatives to plant citrus and coconut in ten communities, aiming to alleviate poverty, enhance productivity, and mitigate climate change challenges.

Togbe Azi Gafa III, Chief of Takuve, echoed the theme’s significance and expressed the pressing need for smart solutions to combat food scarcity and hunger. He outlined challenges faced by farmers, including diseases, lack of market access, and climate change effects. Togbe Azi Gafa III called for government intervention to provide practical solutions and support for the farming community, addressing the cost of modern farming machinery and climate change’s impact on agricultural activities in the area.

The Volta Regional edition of the 39th National Farmers’ Day unfolded at Jubilee Park in Ho on Friday, December 1, 2023, dedicated to honouring the nation’s farmers and fisherfolks for their outstanding contributions to the socio-economic development of the country.

Under the theme “Delivering smart solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience,” the event provided a platform to showcase key achievements and challenges within the agricultural sector.

Highlight of the celebration was the crowning of Mr. Mawuwoe Xesunali, a seasoned farmer from Atsiaklorbor in the Ketu South Municipality, as the Overall Best Regional Farmer for 2023. Xesunali’s agricultural expertise spanned 52 acres of maize, 35 acres of rice, 20 acres of sweet potatoes, 36 acres of vegetables, and a diverse assortment of livestock, including rabbits, pigs, grass cutters, cattle, and sheep. His unwavering commitment to sustainable farming practices earned him this prestigious acknowledgment.

During the regional ceremony, William Agbenyo, Director of the Fishers Commission, emphasized the fisheries sector’s significant contribution to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), reaching approximately 45 percent. Mr. Agbenyo also underscored the commission’s commitment to digitalization, providing fishing vessels with Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and Automatic Information Systems (AIS) to combat illegal fishing and enhance safety at sea.

Addressing the impact of the Akosombo Dam spillage, Mr. William Dzamefe, the Regional Director of Agriculture, reported substantial losses, particularly affecting crops like rice, cassava, maize, tomatoes, onion/shallot, okro, and pepper. He noted that about 6000 farmers were directly impacted by the flooding but assured the implementation of interventions to alleviate the hardships faced by farmers in the affected areas.

Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the Regional Minister, emphasized the Volta Region’s pivotal role in national rice production, contributing 23 percent to the local rice supply. He highlighted government interventions such as Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD), Rearing for Food and Jobs (RFJ), and One-District-One-Warehouse to ensure sustainable food security.

Her Lady Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has called on lawyers, magistrates, and judges to safeguard and strengthen the pillars of justice, which hold the key to a just and equitable society and serve as the bedrock upon which our legal systems are built.

According to Justice Sackey Torkornoo, every person, regardless of their background or circumstances, must receive the right judgment with dignity and respect.

Her Lady Chief Justice Sackey Torkornoo was speaking at the 15th Annual Chief Justice’s Forum held in Ho on Thursday.

The forum brought together all relevant stakeholders to discuss the state of justice delivery and explore the improvements and interventions necessary to guarantee continuous freedom and justice for all people in a timely and efficient manner.

She also called for collaboration, which is key to building the pillars of justice.

She stated that collaboration requires the active engagement of governments, civil society organizations, legal professionals, and concerned citizens.

“We need to work together and bridge the gaps in our justice systems, address systemic injustices, and ensure that the voices of the marginalized and vulnerable are heard and amplified. Additionally, we should embrace technology as an enabler of justice in this digital age.”

She urged members to leverage technological advancements to enhance access to justice, streamline legal processes, and promote transparency.

Sixth Volta Trade Opens with Cultural Splendor & Push For Intra-Africa Trade

The 6th Edition of Volta Trade and Investment Fair 2023 officially opened on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 with a vibrant cultural performance showcasing the rich heritage of the Volta Region at Ho Jubilee Park.

The event, held under the theme “Leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area for Economic Development,” attracted a diverse audience, including diplomats, traditional leaders, government officials, brand ambassadors, and students from second-cycle institutions in the Ho Municipality.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Dela Gadzanku, Chairman of the Ghana Association of Industries for Eastern, Volta, and Oti, emphasized that 2023 marks the year of accelerating the African Free Trade Area, with a particular focus on empowering youth and women. He highlighted the determination of the Volta Region to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA free trade zone for accelerated development.

Dr. Humphrey K. Ayim-Dake, President of the Association of Ghana Industries, characterized the fair as a convergence of industrial players and stakeholders, providing a platform to discuss policy matters, establish connections, and showcase products and innovations. Dr. Ayim-Dake expressed the association’s commitment to supporting policies that facilitate the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises within the African Free Trade Area.

Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, underscored the role of trade and investment as drivers of local economic development. He emphasized their potential to uplift millions from poverty, providing employment opportunities and delivering goods and services at competitive prices. Dr. Letsa called for collective efforts towards responsible investment, highlighting the importance of preserving the ecosystem as the foundation for material wealth and well-being.

Africa’s youngest MP and Minister, Ms. Emma M. Theofulus, Deputy Minister of ICT and Technology of the Republic of Namibia, who was also a special guest to the event, urged the youth to safeguard the rich potential of the region, emphasizing Africa as the only place they can call home. Acknowledging Africa’s status as the youngest continent, with a population expected to double by 2050, she stressed the need for a conscious effort to leverage human and natural capital resources to maximize the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Speaking at the ceremony Ms. Theofulus declared, “Every African child must be able to feel, touch, taste, and experience the fruits of the Free Trade Area.”

The 6ht Volta Fair commenced on Sunday,Ā  with several exhibitors from across the country and beyond in attendance. Some of them who spoke to Volta Online, were optimistic of making gains from the event.

AGI President Urges Government to Fine-Tune Import Regulations for Strategic Products

Dr. Humphrey K. Ayim-Dake, President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), has called on the Ministry of Trade and Industry to intensify efforts in fine-tuning the implementation of the Export and Import (Restrictions on Importation of Selected Strategic Products) Regulations, 2023.

The government aims to restrict the importation of certain products, and Dr. Ayim-Dake emphasizes the need for careful calibration in the execution of these regulations.

Dr. Ayim-Dake expressed AGI’s support for the regulation of imports, asserting that local industries possess the capability to manufacture large quantities of the imported items. These items include cement, sugar, canned tomatoes, soft drinks, animal and vegetable oil, margarine, fruit juices, noodles and pasta, ceramic tiles, mineral water, iron and steel, soap, and detergent, among others.

Highlighting the significance of a well-thought-out approach, Dr. Ayim-Dake stressed the importance of calculated, targeted policies and interventions that will contribute to rapid economic growth. He pointed out that high utility tariffs are exerting pressure on the beverage sector, making production challenging, and called on the government for renegotiations.

The 63rd Annual General Meeting of the Association of Ghana Industries was themed “Industrialisation through Sustainable and Efficient Value Chain.” Dr. Ayim-Dake affirmed AGI’s commitment to spearheading initiatives, advocating for policies that promote sustainable industrial practices, and fostering collaborations to strengthen the entire value chain.

Kwasi Ofori-Antwi, the Representative of K.T Hammond, Minister of Trade and Industry, stated that the government has been actively pursuing an industrial transformation agenda to reshape the industrial landscape of the Ghanaian economy. He urged industries to persist in adopting sustainable and efficient supply chain strategies to ensure the continuity of sustainable industrial operations.
