Tafi-Atome Monkey Sanctuary Seeks Eco-Friendly Infrastructure

BY: Daniel Orlando | VoltaOnline

The Tafi-Atome Monkey Sanctuary, one of the Volta Region’s most treasured eco-tourism sites, is calling for urgent support to develop sustainable accommodation facilities as visitor numbers continue to rise.

The sanctuary’s manager, Mr. Francis Acquaye, revealed that the site welcomes approximately 700 foreign tourists and 1,500 local visitors each month, yet lacks adequate lodging options to cater to the growing demand.

“We are experiencing a steady rise in tourist numbers, both local and international. However, the absence of eco-friendly lodging remains a major challenge. We are calling on government agencies, private investors, and NGOs to support us in developing sustainable accommodation that enhances visitor experience while protecting the environment,” he stated.

Established in the 1990s, the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary protects a population of Mona monkeys, considered sacred by the local community. Over the years, it has evolved into a key destination for eco-tourism, blending conservation, culture, and wildlife.

Tourism experts believe that with the right investment, the sanctuary could boost the local economy, create employment for the youth, and serve as a model for sustainable tourism in Ghana.

Meanwhile, the sector minister, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, in an interaction with the media during a recent tour of the region, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tourism development, stressing the need for strategic investment and collaboration to unlock the full potential of the Volta Region.

Hon. Gomashie emphasized that targeted investment in infrastructure and marketing would ensure that communities directly benefit from tourism revenue.

“Families live around these sites and care for them, but they don’t directly benefit from tourism revenue. With targeted investment, we can attract more visitors and ensure that the benefits remain within the communities,” she stated.

She also highlighted the lack of star-rated hotels and modern amenities, noting that these gaps often result in tourists making brief visits instead of extended stays that contribute to local economies.

The minister pledged to spotlight lesser-known attractions across all districts, ensuring every part of the Volta Region has an opportunity to showcase its tourism potential. “With the right support, these sites can become valuable contributors to national development,” she remarked.

As eco-tourism gains global attention, industry stakeholders remain hopeful that investment in sustainable tourism infrastructure will position the Volta Region as a leading destination, creating jobs, preserving cultural heritage, and strengthening Ghana’s tourism appeal.

Sogakope Assemblyman Murder: 8 Convicts Jailed, One Gets Life Sentence

BY: Daniel Orlando | VoltaOnline

Five years after the gruesome murder of Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, former Assembly Member for Sogakope South Electoral Area, the High Court in Ho has sentenced eight individuals for their roles in the crime.

Presiding Judge, Justice John Ekow Mensah on Thursday, May 22, 2025 handed a life sentence to the ringleader, Richard Adikyere, convicted of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and robbery. His accomplices, Emmanuel Xetro and Stephen Adzibolo, received 47-year prison terms.

Earlier during the trial, four other accused individuals—Obed Ayornu, Michael Sam, Samuel Kofi Zotorvi, and Christian Zotorvi—accepted plea deals and were each sentenced to 15 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, on March 1, 2020, at about 1:30 a.m., Adikyere, Adzibolo, and others stormed the residence of Adzahli in Sogakope, breaking in with cement blocks. They were armed with a pump-action gun and two pistols, one of which Adikyere had stolen in an earlier robbery.

They shot him three times at close range, resulting in fatal head and chest injuries, as confirmed by a post-mortem at the Sogakope District Hospital. Before fleeing, the attackers stole a significant sum of money.

Investigators revealed that one convict, Emmanuel Hedzro, used part of his stolen money to purchase a motorbike worth GH¢4,800. The criminals were tracked down and arrested at various locations, including Ashaiman.

During interrogations, Adikyere admitted to firing the fatal shots. The court ruled based on overwhelming evidence presented by the prosecution.

Tensions ran high after the verdict, as a handcuffed Adikyere attempted to attack journalists capturing his image.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Adzahli, father of the deceased, described the loss as devastating, calling his son the family’s breadwinner. Despite the pain, he expressed gratitude to investigators and the Ghana Police Service for their dedication to securing justice.

“They did a great job. This is a victory for justice, and I thank everyone who contributed,” he remarked.

Senior State Attorney, Andrews Dodzi Adugu reassured Ghanaians of the state’s commitment to enforcing the law, urging the youth to focus on productive ventures.

The deceased was a popular young businessman, known for his ventures in telecom products including mobile money services, which employed a number of young people in the area. His funeral attracted many people in spite of the Covid-19 restrictions at the time.

Ho Residents Call for Urgent Action as Floods Displace Many Homes

BY: Daniel Orlando | VoltaOnlinegh

A torrential downpour on Tuesday afternoon displaced several residents in the Ho Municipality, submerging homes and destroying properties. The unexpected rains, which lasted nearly two hours, triggered severe flooding across multiple communities, causing widespread distress.

Worst-hit areas—including Tsiyikpota, Akpenamawu, Redeem-Road, Bankoe, Agortome, and parts of Sokode-Lokoe—remain in a state of devastation, with affected residents counting their losses. Many were seen desperately salvaging personal belongings from flooded homes, while others have sought refuge with friends and relatives.

The floodwater also overran bridges on major roads, temporarily halting vehicular movement and exacerbating the crisis.

The disaster has reignited calls for immediate intervention from the Ho Municipal Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). Residents insist that desilting choked gutters in the area could have prevented the flooding.

“The water had nowhere to go because the gutters are full of debris. If the authorities had cleared them, this wouldn’t have happened,” lamented a resident of Akpenamawu.

Another resident from Tsiyikpota expressed frustration, saying, “We are tired. Every time it rains heavily, our homes get flooded. We plead with the Assembly and NADMO to act now.”

Residents argue that clearing the drains would enable free flow of rainwater, reducing the likelihood of future disasters. In addition to immediate relief, they are demanding long-term flood mitigation measures, including proper drainage systems and routine maintenance.

With the rainy season intensifying, pressure is mounting on local authorities to take swift and decisive action to prevent another catastrophe.

BY: Daniel Orlando | VoltaOnline

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is expected to receive a projected GHC10 billion this year, following a renewed government commitment to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL).

According to Dr. Kwesi Senanu Djokoto, Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) of the NHIA, the funding will significantly strengthen the Authority’s ability to reimburse health facilities on time.

Speaking as a panel member on TV3’s Health Forum, Dr. Djokoto emphasized the growing financial responsibility of the NHIA, noting that a significant portion of funding for many health facilities across Ghana now comes from NHIA reimbursements.

He stressed the importance of adopting more realistic tariffs for healthcare services, arguing that appropriate pricing is critical to ensuring both quality care for patients and sustainability for healthcare providers.

“Our reimbursement must reflect the actual cost of services. We need to pay realistic tariffs if we are to support our facilities effectively and ensure long-term viability,” Dr. Djokoto stated.

The discussion forms part of broader conversations on transforming Ghana’s healthcare sector through improved financing, infrastructure, and policy reforms.
