Hohoe NPP Debunks Claims of Removing NDC Flags in the Constituency

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Hohoe Constituency of the Volta Region has debunked claims that it removed flags belonging to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Members of NDC on Friday, July 13, 2018 accused NPP supporters of removing their flags prior to the visit of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to Hohoe as part of his 3-Day tour of the Volta Region.

At a press conference held on Friday, July 20, the NPP denied all allegations raised by the NDC saying, it is out of sheer envy and jealousy of the good work the government of NPP has done within just 18 months in office.

Delivering the press statement at the NPP office at Hohoe, the Constituency Chairman, Anthony Kondobrey said the allegation by the NDC that NPP supporters are responsible for the removal of their flags are all lies and for that matter, the executives and sympathizers of the NDC in Hohoe Constituency are behaving like “a jealous second wife who cannot stand the praises of her rival.”

He made it clear that anytime the NDC provoke them, they will remind them of their painful downfall in the 2016 general elections with more than a thousand difference vote which he said has been “the bitter truth for the NDC to bear.”

The statement advised the NDC to put away their hypocritical behaviour and pave way for good governance by the NPP to raise the flag of Ghana High.

It explained that the NPP government is making efforts to ensure Ghanaians feel very comfortable in their own nation through the implementation of the free education, introduction of the NABCO programme, reduction of utility tariffs among others.

The statement also assured the people of Hohoe and the Volta Region as whole of government’s commitment to completing the Eastern Corridor road before the close of the year 2020.

NDC Executive Promises to Work towards Party’s Victory in 2020

Joseph Kwame Antwi

The newly elected National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Officer for the Nkwanta South Constituency in the Volta Region, Joseph Kwame Antwi, has promised to make his party more vibrant in the constituency.
According to him, the activities of NDC in Nkwanta South has been dormant, hence the need to revive and reposition the party to meet the aspiration of its admirers.
He said this during the inaugural ceremony for the newly elected constituency executives in Nkwanta.
He however, seized the opportunity to thank branch executives for electing him and promised to work up to expectations.
The Member of Parliament for Nkwanta South, Dr. Geoffrey Kini, called on party supporters to bury their differences and forge ahead in unity for election 2020 as the NDC is preparing to recapture power from “the most incompetent Nana Addo, Bawumia and their New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.”
He added that the Akufo-Addo led government has already failed Ghanaians and therefore, gives the opposition NDC an upper hand to win the 2020 elections, with a united front.
He added that NPP had failed to deliver on its 2016 campaign promises to Ghanaians.
“The NPP in 2016 promised Ghanaians 1 district one factory, 1 villagge 1 dam, I million for each constituency, but are yet to deliver all these to Ghanaians”
He indicated that it is disheartening to learn the NPP National Chairman, Freddie Blay, places priority in purchasing 275 buses for his party at the time when the country lacks enough ambulances.
He therefore, encouraged Ghanaians to repose their trust in the NDC and vote it back to power in 2020 for a better Ghana.

Subsistence Farming In the Volta Region Needs Enhancement [Article]

0

The Volta Region as unofficially partitioned by its indigenes into Northern, Central and Southern parts have over the years engaged predominantly in small scale farming.

The land up north and central parts are considered much fertile, but in a rather sharp contrast, the porous sandy soil found in the southern parts are usually nourished with animal composts coupled with irrigation in order to attain fertility to grow crops.

Food crops produced up north and central of the region notably are tubers of yam, maize, pepper, cassava, tomato, cocoa etc.

The southern part produces shallots, tomato, carrots etc. Fishing is one of the main occupations of the people but has in recent times dwindled due to depleted fish stock in the sea.

After a successive annual celebration of national farmers day for the 33rd time, Volta happened to gain it for four (4) times.
In 1986, 1991, 2004 and 2013, farmers from the Central parts of the region (Akatsi, Juapong, Ho and Sogakope) respectively succeeded as the Best National farmers.

The Southern and Northern parts are yet to attain these great achievements of national awards in spite of their tremendous effort in feeding the nation Ghana in their very own way. Most farmers have at least been acknowledged at the various Regional and District levels over the years.

Challenges affecting the people of the Southern part remain the battle for dry lands as urbanization increases and the tidal waves and erosion from the sea makes situations even worse.
They have been able to invest their energy in irrigating mechanically and manually, their crops almost every day.

For the 33rd time of awarding hard work and acknowledging efforts of farmers at the national level, farmers in the Volta Region have had their fair share as the statistics on the ministry of Agriculture website indicates. The region is at par with Western and Greater Accra regions with 4 winners of the prestigious annual awards. Northern and Upper-West regions are the least national awardees as 2 time winners each, while the Ashanti leads for the 5th time last year, 2017.

Engaging some farmers in the region, they decried among other things, land acquisition for large scale farming as their major issues as custodians of land mounts pressure on them after some lease period of time. Some chiefs are unwilling to release their lands on favorable terms of conditions for commercial farming.

The second topmost agenda of the United Nations with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to; “End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture — source;. – United Nations’ website.

To achieve these goals by 2030, farmers in the Volta Region must avail themselves to improve yields and manage post-harvest losses. This can be done in collaboration with government on its flagship programs of “Planting for Food and Jobs and 1District; 1Factory (1D1F), which needs total commitment and proper arrangements in allocating resources.
Volta Region been one of Ghana’s food hub has 20,570km2 (7,940sq ml) as its area coverage with a population of about 2,118,252 according to the 2010 population census with majority of the demographics been youth.

Over the years, the people of Agotime Ziope have petitioned government to come to their aid to salvage their postharvest losses of tomatoes. Their produce (tomato) have to be sold cheaply to recoup part of their yearly farming investments. They have asked successive governments to establish a tomato factory in the locality but this has not materialized.
“Our desire and attempt to produce tomato in large quantity will only be in futility when there is no factory to process it. Tomato is perishable and there must be a processing plant to turn it into paste. This we the youth currently unemployed and are not in school are willing to do for a living but until government come to build a factory, we would prefer riding motor bikes to make a living” a farmer said in an interview.

The people of Mafi Kumase in the Central Tongu District have complained bitterly about their produce been priced cheaply since there is no measuring scale for their gari. The only gari factory available on visit by Fred Duhoe was visibly covered in weeds and has become a place of convenience for locals around. “From the planting stage, through harvesting and processing of cassava is quite tedious yet people come to take advantage of our gari and price it the way they like. We are certainly not making any profit out of cassava and gari but we have no option since that’s what puts food on our table” a local reveals in an interview with Fred Duhoe.

The people of Dambai and its environs due to bad roads have lost much of their yam produce before it reaches the cities.

The people of Dzodze produce palm fruits in large quantity while the people of Keta and its environs feed the nation with some amount of fish and salt alongside the vegetables. The people of Biakoye, Hohoe and Jasikan in their efforts feed the nation with maize, rice, mango etc.
The people of Kadjebi produce yam and groundnut in large quantity when a favorable average weather temperature of about 250C remains fairly stable throughout the season.

With the current technological trends in Agriculture, there is always a bumper harvest when there are fairly good weather conditions but most unfortunately, the food produced doesn’t last longer due to over-reliance of farmers on pesticides, weedicides and fertilizers.
In almost the past decade, Agriculture Science was a subject studied in the basic schools of Ghana while some schools have farms for practical.

Interacting with some idling youth of school going age in Ho, they revealed, “Farming is not attractive since they have no knowledge about the subject from school”.

The bottom line is, if these peasant farmers are given the requisite education on new trends of farming with its accompanied technological preservation methods, Ghana hope to be secured in terms of food security and prices of goods will remain relatively low.
The Adidome Farm Institute at Adidome in the Central Tongu District and the Ohawu Agric College at Abor in the Akatsi North District are among the specifically designated colleges for agriculture studies in the Volta Region which could help upgrade the knowledge of local farmers.

This was after the Agbogbomefia asked for investigations into Blay’s purchase of f 275 buses for the NPP at the cost of $11.4 million during its recently held National Delegates Conference in Koforidua.

Blay’s comment has since generated reactions from a section of the public condemning his reply to Togbe’s admonishing. They believe Togbe Afede’s comment was aimed at addressing the issue of the perception of corruption and should not have provoked such harsh response Mr. Blay.

Just two days ago, the Asogli youth issued a statement warning Mr. Blay to apologise to the Asogli State Council and the National House of Chiefs or risk incurring their wrath.

Togbe Afede XIV

The group believes an insult to their overlord is to the entire Asogli State. “Chieftaincy institution remains the embodiment of the people and must not be toyed with by any person irrespective of their status in society,” the statement said.

The youth of Asogli State’s call were similar to earlier ones from National House of Chiefs, Asogli State Council and Volta NPP through its Secretary, Mr. Joseph Homenya.

Tongu Council of Chiefs believe that by qualified privilege, Togbe Afede with his standing in society was obliged to call for investigations into Mr. Blay’s purchase of buses just at the last hour of his party’s delegate conference.

The statement said Mr. Blay’s went against the Chieftaincy Act and therefore called on all chiefs to condemn his conduct.

“This is an insult to chiefs and we call on all on chiefs in the country to stand against him and condemn Mr. Blay’s conduct. Additionally, Mr. Blay’s conduct contravened the Chieftaincy Act 2008, Act 759, Section 63, sub-section b.”

Dambai: Weed Takes over Abandoned ICT Center 4 Years After Its Completion

0

An information and communication technology (ICT) center that has been built at Dambai in the Krachi East Municipality of the Volta Region to serve students and people in the area has remained under lock since 2014.

A visit to the Center revealed very disturbing development indicating the facility has never been put to use four years after it was completed.

It was observed that weeds have outgrown the abandoned Center, reducing it to serve as domicile for snakes, reptiles and other wild animals for a long time while schools in the area continue to lack these facilities for effective teaching and learning of ICT.

The project which was started by Raphael Kofi Ojumako, then former District Chief Executive of Krachi East and completed in 2014 by his successor, Mr. Peter Awuranyi was to enhance the technological dexterity of students from Oti Senior High Technical, Asukwakwa Senior High School and citizens of Krachi East.

In an interview with some students and residents in the area, they expressed displeasure about how the project has been left to waste when it could have been put to use to benefit students and the public.

The abandoned Dambai ICT Center

According to them, the site had become a dwelling place for rats, snakes, squatters and some other dangerous animals which defeats the purpose for which the project was implemented.

The aggrieved residents are therefore calling on the appropriate authorities to revisit the Dambai ICT Center project so that it would serve its intended purpose.

Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Patrick Charty Jilimah in his reaction, confirmed the situation and blamed the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration for not taking proper care of the facility.

He disclosed that measures are being taken to clear the surrounding of the facility and do some repair works at the Center to make it operational.

Hon Jilimah also added that the Assembly is doing everything possible to engage an IT Expert to undertake administrative and training work of the facility.

He urged interested persons to take advantage of the facility when fully functional, to equip themselves technologically in order to fit into the world market of IT.

Nneka Youth Foundation Transforms over 11,000 Lives in Volta, Greater Accra

0

Founder of Nneka Youth Foundation, Cecilia Fiaka has challenged media practitioners to pay more attention to children and women and other vulnerable groups in deprived communities.

Addressing journalists from selected media houses at a workshop in the Volta Region, Madam Cecilia Fiaka expressed worry about the level of deprivation persons living in rural areas go through.

According to her, even when there are efforts to reach out to these persons in their areas, the bad nature of the road network as well as inadequate funds becomes a major challenging factor.

“I believe if in our own small ways, we can effect little changes in our home towns, then gradually the country will be a better place to live. It’s sad when you visit these areas and they look as if they are not part of the country. They are really deprived out here and so social vices are on the rise. It’s not as if the authorities don’t know about this, they do. Speak about them and leave the politics for another day.”

Mama Nneka, as Madam Fiaka is affectionately called by all indigenes, has defied all odds to affect lives of over 11,000 women, children and youth in 200 communities including Ve-Agbome and others in the Volta and Greater Accra regions with her initiatives.

Cecilia Fiaku, Founder, Nneka Youth Foundation

Founded in 2012, the Nneka Youth Foundation has initiated Vocational Entrepreneurial Pathway (VEP-Ghana) aimed at empowering, equipping and mentoring teenage mothers and out-of-school girls from rural and deprived communities.

A palm oil processing project has also been initiated by the Foundation to mechanize the ways of palm oil extraction to ease the burden of the women.

Aside this, a scholarship scheme and educational logistics support has also been initiated to support educational needs of some students at the secondary and tertiary levels.

There is also a book drive initiative, which provides text books to schools to aid with teaching and learning, thus, improving academic performance tremendously in the communities.

The Foundation in its own way has initiated community sensitization projects on the rights of the child and the responsibility of parents towards them.

Last but not the least on the Foundation’s initiatives is a summer camping activity organized every year for youth across the length and breadth of the country.

This year’s camping event is slated for this month and about 3,500 participants are expected to take part.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, about 600,000 of the 2.1 million people in the Volta Region are aged between 0–14 Years.

Women constitute 51 per cent of the total population of the Volta Region but little is said in the media about their needs and challenges.

According to her and other speakers at the one-day workshop held on the theme: ‘Empowering Children, Youth and Women: The Role of Media Practitioners’, in reality, there are often imbalances in coverage of women, youth and children.
