MTN Ghana Foundation Hands Over GH¢15m Accident & Emergency Centre to Ho Teaching Hospital

The MTN Ghana Foundation has officially handed over a newly constructed and fully equipped Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre to the Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta Region, in a landmark investment valued at over GH¢15 million.

The expanded 30-bed facility significantly boosts the hospital’s capacity to manage trauma cases, sudden illnesses, and other life-threatening emergencies. It is designed to ease the heavy strain on the hospital’s existing 22-bed A&E department, which has long struggled with overcrowding and rising demand for emergency services. By expanding space and introducing advanced medical systems, the centre will improve patient flow, reduce congestion, and strengthen referral services across the Volta Region and beyond.

The new unit is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, including patient and cardiac monitors, portable ultrasound machines, defibrillators with pacemaker capabilities, electrocardiogram machines, ventilators, and arterial blood gas analyzers. Other notable additions include haematology and biochemistry analyzers, blood storage refrigerators, infusion pumps, suction devices, crash carts, blood warmers, hospital beds, stretchers, and examination lamps. To ensure accessibility for critically ill patients and persons with disabilities, the facility also features an elevator, alongside an electronic door and lift system.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, said the project reflects MTN’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare nationwide. She noted that emergency care is the gateway to every hospital, and the new centre—built to international standards—will save lives by enabling faster, more effective interventions. She explained that the intervention forms part of MTN Foundation’s broader focus on health, education, and economic empowerment, citing over 55 completed health projects nationwide, including the Foundation’s earlier construction of a 60-bed maternity and neonatal intensive care block at the Keta Municipal Hospital.

Board Chairman of Ho Teaching Hospital, Dr. Delanyo Dorvlo, described the facility as a major boost to healthcare delivery, stressing that the expansion will allow the hospital to handle critical emergencies more effectively. Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Hintermann K. K. Mbroh, commended MTN Foundation for the investment and appealed for improved training facilities to match the hospital’s teaching mandate.

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, also lauded the Foundation’s intervention, hailing the GH¢15 million investment as a landmark achievement that strengthens critical healthcare services essential to the region’s development. He described the project as a remarkable philanthropic effort that aligns with government’s vision to deliver quality healthcare to all.

By relieving the overstretched 22-bed department and introducing modern systems, the new Accident and Emergency Centre is set to transform emergency healthcare in the Volta Region—where timely intervention often determines survival.
