Mawuli School, one of Ghana’s most respected second-cycle institution in the Volta Region, climaxed its 75th Anniversary celebration with a colourful Grand Durbar on Saturday, drawing dignitaries, alumni, students and well-wishers from across the country to honour its enduring legacy of discipline, academic excellence and national service.

The week-long celebration, held on the theme “Empowering the Head, Heart and Hand into the Future,” showcased the school’s rich history and its contributions to Ghana’s development since its founding in 1950 by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG).

The Volta regional capital, Ho, was brought to a standstill on Friday as members of the Old Mawuli Students Union (OMSU) arrived in a long convoy, heralding the climax with a spirited float through the principal streets. The display of unity and pride set the tone for the durbar, which was chaired by Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli.

Among the dignitaries present were prominent old students now serving in national leadership, including Hon. Governs Kwame Agbodza, Minister for Roads and Highways and MP for Adaklu; Hon. Edem Agbana, MP for Ketu North; Hon. Stephen Adom, Ho Municipal Chief Executive; Major General Bismarck Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff; Hon. Kofi Attoh, Chief of Staff to the Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Mawuli School Governing Board; Hon. Ben Dostei Malor, Deputy Ambassador to the United States; Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, former Volta Regional Minister; and Madam Elizabeth Ohene, veteran journalist and former Presidential Advisor. Hon. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, MP for Ho West and Chairman of the GETFund Board was also present.

Welcoming guests to the durbar, Mr. Benjamin Yaw Dei, Headmaster of Mawuli School, expressed gratitude to the EPCG, government, alumni and stakeholders for their unwavering support over the decades. He described the school’s 75-year journey as one marked by resilience, transformation and a commitment to nurturing responsible citizens. He called for continued investment in infrastructure and teaching resources to sustain the school’s vision of holistic education.

As part of the anniversary, OMSU handed over a newly constructed four-unit, two-bedroom staff residential apartment as the official legacy project, aimed at improving accommodation for teaching staff. Other year groups also made significant contributions. The 2000 Year Group renovated the iconic ‘White Block’ and donated items worth GHC30,000 to the Ho Central Female Prison to mark their 25th anniversary. The 2005 Year Group refurbished the school’s computer laboratory and restocked it with 40 laptops, while the 2015 Year Group handed over 10 canopies and ceiling fans for selected classrooms.

In a symbolic gesture of government support, the sod-cutting for a proposed 650-capacity dormitory was jointly performed by the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, and the Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu. The Education Minister announced a GHC300 million allocation under the 2026 Budget to upgrade infrastructure in selected senior high schools across the country. He commended Mawuli School for its enduring contribution to national development and urged students to uphold discipline and integrity.

“There is growing indiscipline in our schools, some even with teachers abusing learners. We would not accept that. We would apply heavy sanctions to any teacher who wants to take advantage of a learner,” Mr. Iddrisu stated. He added that students must walk away from Mawuli School with values that would shape their future, stressing that discipline and integrity remain the pillars of true education.

Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Bliss Divine Agbeko (Rtd), Moderator of the General Assembly of the EPCG, reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to education, linking the school’s legacy to the EPCG’s 175th anniversary. He said Mawuli School was founded to provide holistic education grounded in faith, discipline and service, and called on stakeholders to continue supporting the school’s vision.

The climax was preceded by a series of activities including health screening, choral and cultural nights, public lectures and a homecoming event for old students. A food bazaar at Baeta Park ran throughout the week, offering a platform for alumni bonding and community engagement. The celebration ended on Sunday with a Thanksgiving Service, where prayers were offered for the continued growth and impact of the school.

Mawuli School, known for its motto “Head, Heart, Hand,” continues to stand tall as the Pride of Volta, shaping generations of leaders for Ghana and beyond.
