The Ghana Netball Federation in its quest to further spread the sport across the country has set Thursday, May 17, to inaugurate Interim Volta Regional Executives at Mawuko Girls Senior High School (SHS), Ho.
The inauguration, a move to revamp, reestablish, restructure and revive the sport in the region has become necessary as the Association formed in 2004 became dormant and gradually scattered.
The Ceremony which will begin at 11:00am at the Regional Physical Education (P.E) Unit is expected to have former NSA Sports Director, S. K Hlodze as the Chair with Regional Sports Director of the National Sports Authority Volta, Kwame Amponfi Jnr. as the Guest of Honour.
A seven-member interim executive, to be led by the Regional P.E Coordinator Bright Dotse will be handed the constitution of the Ghana Netball Federation with the mandate of developing the game in the region, from the grassroots. The executive to be inaugurated has its members cut across the region.
In an interview with Davis Clottey also TalksenseSports, Regional Coordinator, Selorm Dusu (who maintains his position) says the intent to spread the executives is to make sure each member works on developing the game.
“It was strategically planned not to have most or all of them at the Central zone. We don’t want the game to be developed around a particular zone only. By this, we looked at the interest of the people and how they are developing the game in their districts before adding them to the Interim executives. We also want the fast creation of District Associations. So far, we have cut across all the zones according to how the second cycle had divided the region. So they will work on getting formidable teams and Associations.”
Selorm also revealed the first and foremost mandate of the Interim Executives.
“Their first mandate is to be able to organise and put people together so that we can call for Congress, where we will do proper elections. So this Thursday at the National Federation; Rev Nikio and his other executives will come and put the interim executives into office and hand over the constitution to them.”
The Association plans to have a match between the host School, Mawuko Girls SHS and some selected players after the inauguration.
Volta Region is hopeful of raising a formidable team to battle the rest of the regions come July/August in Cape Coast after it failed to present a team for the revived National Sports Festival last year.
