Hundreds of Muslims in Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region gave a rousing welcome to the Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with a call for an ECOWAS Mosque at Aflao.
The request was made by the Imam of the Municipality, Yussif Musah, when the Vice President and his entourage visited the area on Saturday, May 19 on a Ramadan Tour to pray with the Muslim faithful for Ghana’s peace. The entourage also paid a courtesy call on the traditional rulers in the area.
The Municipal Imam appealed to the Vice President to expand the Aflao Central Mosque to an ultra-modern one befitting the border town to accommodate Muslim faithful from Ghana and those migrating into the country from neighboring countries.
He noted that the mosque cannot contain the rising population in the area and numerous immigrants from Togo, Benin, and Nigeria among others who worship there.
Yusif Musah also used the occasion to call on the government to open job opportunities for the teeming youth in the community to prevent them from engaging in criminal activities.
In response, the Vice President promised to take into consideration their requests for necessary solutions.
He noted that Zongo Development Fund has been set up with an amount of 100 million Ghana cedis budgeted for it to soon be used for purposes of developing Zongo communities.
He said government is committed to delivering on its mandates and promises and would continue to be the favourite government the people must ever have and urged the youth in the community to take advantage of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) initiative as means to tackling unemployment issues.
At the ceremony, the Aflao Zongo Chief Sarki Sumani commended the government for recognising Zongo communities following the creation of Inner City and Zongo Development Ministry and called on the Ministry to ensure development and job opportunities in the Zongos.
The Vice President was accompanied by the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Peter Amewu of Lands and Natural Resources, Boniface Abubakar Saddique of Inner-City and Zongo Development, NPP Regional Chairman, Makafui Kofi Woanya among others.
