Some coastal communities in the Ketu South and Keta Municipalities of the Volta region have been severely affected by heavy floods caused by torrential rains in the past weeks. The continuous downpour has submerged homes, schools, churches, and other spaces, including cemeteries.
The affected areas include Agbozume, Agbawoeme, Ahiatakukope in Aflao-Duta, Viepe, and Awakorme in the Ketu South Municipality. In the Keta Municipality, the floodwater took over various parts of the Campus of the Keta Business College (KetaBusco), including the school’s kitchen and the frontage of the girls’ dormitory.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has reported that about 2000 residents have been displaced in the affected communities. In response to the situation, the Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Maxwell Lugudor, announced the temporary closure of basic schools in the affected communities to ensure the safety of school children.
Displaced residents are also putting up with relatives, while the local assembly mobilises the necessary support for them, he added.
Ms. Ivy Amewugah, the Volta Regional Director of NADMO, during an assessment tour on Monday, acknowledged the huge extent of damage caused by the floods, and assured that her out would collaborate with the national office to secure appropriate relief items for the victims. She however attributed the flooding in one of the communities to the construction of roads by a philanthropist without the proper accompanying drainage systems.
Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for Ketu South, who visited the affected areas over weekend, provided food items some elderly displaced persons, has called on the government and other charitable organizations to assist the affected constituents.
