The government has decided to scale down the grand celebration of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day anniversary due to economic constraints.
At a press briefing, Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu MP, announced that this year’s celebration will be held at the forecourt of the Jubilee House, instead of rotating among regional capitals.
According to Mr. Ofosu, the decision to suspend the rotational policy was made to save costs, as last year’s event alone cost the nation GH¢15 million, hence the government aims to prioritize responsible financial management while focusing on essential duties.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the rotational celebration of the Independence Anniversary across various regions, citing the need to cut costs.
The Regional-level celebrations have been cancelled, while celebrations at the District levels will be moderate and supervised by Regional Ministers.
There will be no parade or march past of security agencies and school children during the National Celebration, he added.
In addition, activities for the commemoration have been revised, with the 28th February Crossroads Shooting Incident to be commemorated, and the President’s Special Awards for Children to be presented.
A Guard of Honour will be mounted by the Security Agencies, and Cultural Performances and Recitals will be held as part of the celebration at the presidency, where the President will deliver a National Address.
