Residents in the Nkwanta South Municipality of Oti the Region, are calling for the immediate repair of a broken metal bridge that links the municipal capital to other adjoining communities.

They described the state of the bridge as a disaster in waiting, which requires prompt action from government.

Some traders who ply the route also lamented, the situation has forced vehicles to abandoned the bridge and use longer alternative routes at a higher fare, hence increasing the cost of doing business.

They added that, several complaints to the authorities to fix the bridge, went unheeded.

In a response, the Nkwanta South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), John Thasun said efforts are being made to get the bridge fix as the situation was becoming devastating.

BY: Benjamin K. Owusu | Voltaonlinegh.com |

Some supporters of the New Partriotic Party in the Nkwanta South Constituency of the Oti Region, have insentified their campaign to get the President to nominate the party’s Secretary, Felix Owusu-Gyimah as the next Municipal Chief Executive for the area.

Mr. Owusu-Gyimah was among 15 aspirants vetted at the Regional level for position and later shortlisted to Accra, for the national vetting.

But even before the President announces his choice of MMDCEs, there seem to be a ground swell of support for the candidature of the Nkwanta South NPP scribe.

At a press briefing, addressed by  Desmond Keyeke, the party supporters said the Mr. Owusu-Gyimah has been a committed and dedicated officer of NPP, whose good works must be rewarded.

According to him, the NPP party is noted for rewarding dedicated, selfless, and committed service for party work, for which the Constituency Secretary has a proven track record of trustworthiness, to promote transparency and a loyalty in all spheres of party works.

They said rumours of the appointment of someone else, if tends out to be true, will be disappointing, as it will hugely discourage commitment, sacrifice, hardwork and above all loyalty among the rank and file of the party.

They further threatened to leave the party if their preferred choice – Mr. Owusu-Gyimah is not appointed by president, a move, they noted would adversely impact the NPP’s chances in the next election.

That notwithstanding, the Regional Census officer said the exercise has been successful, even as they work to cover the  remaining seven per cent of households during the mop up exercise, which ends on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

Nkwanta - Sibi stretch of the Eastern Corridor road

BY: Benjamin K. Owusu|Voltaonlinegh.com |

The chief of Kpassa in the Nkwanta North district of the Oti Region, Ubor Konja Tassan VI, has threatened to lead demonstration against government to register their displeasure over the continual neglect of their deplorable roads.

Ubor Konja, who expressed frustration over the inability of successive governments since 2011, to complete the 50-Kilometer Nkwanta – Sibi stretch of the Eastern Corridor road, awarded to China Jiangxi International Corporation (CJIC) firm, said the long delay in the completion of the road, was making traveling on the stretch a burdensome venture for motorists, while also hindering the  socio-economic development of the area.

According to him, he was particularly disturbed by the negative impact of the road within the Kpassa township, which has been filled with loss chippings and other unwarranted materials by the contractor, that was killing commuters and other road users.

The frustrated chief has thereby vowed to mobilise his people to embark on series of demonstrations, to demand their fair share of roads under the government’s declared year of roads agenda.

Some residents who spoke to Volta Online backed the chief’s stance, saying they have had enough of the  empty promises from the authorities and want to see real action on the road, which they described as a death trap for road users. ‘The chippings on the road is causing harm than before. as it has been causing accident among motor riders and other vehicle,’a resident lamented.

Meanwhile, the Regional Minister, Joshua Makubu who visited the area on the back of the complaints, assured the chief and residents that, government was engaging with the contractor to ensure the project is completed to reduce their burden.

BY: News Desk | Voltaonlinegh.com |

A ground breaking ceremony last Sunday (July 4,2021) in Ho, for a permanent office complex for the Volta Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) became a ‘battle ground’ for some party bigwigs with flagbearer ambitions.

Though not physically present at the event, these Flagbearer Hopefuls nonetheless, flexed their muscles through individual donations for the project in a bid to probably prove to party supporters that they were ready to  succeed President Akufo-Addo.

First to call the shot, was Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, an absent special guest, through his delegation, Mr. Fred Oware, Chief Executive Officer of Bui Power Authority donated an amount of GH¢20,000.00 and 500 bags of cement with a promise to send further support in the course of the project.
Dr  Bawumia is being tipped as a likely successor of his boss, as he is seen as the one to “break the 8-year cycle” convention in Ghanaian politics.

Next was, Hon. Joe Ghartey, former Railways Minister who announced through a representative, a cash donation of GH¢25,000.00 for the new Regional Party Secretariat edifice.

The Essikado-Ketan MP, was the first to announce his intention for the NPP flagbearership slot, on the back of the party’s second term victory in December 2020.
Reports suggested that this move might had caused him a ministerial slot in President Akufo-Addo’s second term.

Also on the bill was, Trades and Industry Minister, Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, who sent an amount of GH¢20,000.00 and 1,000 bags of cement for the project through Mr. Kenwud Nuworsu, former Regional chairman of the NPP.

Mr. Kyeremanten is a known contender for the NPP flagbeareship slot since 2007 and he is highly tipped to try his luck once again in the 2023 contest.

There were however, donations from other individuals, including, President Akufo-Addo, and Mr. Francis Nyonyo, Council of State Member for the Volta Region who  both sent Gh¢50,000.00 each.
Same amount came from the NPP National Chairman, Mr. Freddie Blay, who also announced GH¢100,000.00 support from the national party, as well GH¢20,000.00 donation from his wife, Mrs. Gina Blay, the Ambassador to Germany.

Former Chieftaincy Minister, Hon. Kofi Dzamesi  also donated Gh¢20,000.00 worth of Cement for the project.

The project, which is a brainchild of the Regional Chairman, Mr. Makafui Woanyah, is estimated at the cost of Gh¢1.6 million, and scheduled for completion at the end of the year.

The ceremony, which attracted party officials at the Regional and Constituency levels, however, witnessed the absence of the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa and the NPP Regional Organizer, Mr. Korsi Bodja.

BY: News Desk | voltaonlinegh.com |

Details have emerged of a recent visit of some traditional leaders from Akorviefe in the Ho West District to the Jubilee House in Accra.

The delegation, which included Togbe Adza Osei VII, the Paramount chief, was led by the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa and the Ho West DCE, Hon. Ernest Apau to meet with President Akufo-Addo.

Their mission, Volta Online gathered was ostensibly to make a case for the President to retain the current DCE for a second term.

However, one interesting highlight of the meeting, as monitored in a video by Volta Online, was the personal request of the chief  to the president for a vehicle.

Togbe, who sounded nervous and fumbled through out the delivery of his written speech, nonetheless, mustered the courage to put his request across, and said; “Your excellency, your junior brother is no longer having a vehicle now, so if I put on my regalia [going somewhere], I have to stand by the road side and wait for trotro to take me to wherever I am going. so I’m pleading, if you can bless me with a means of transport so it will make my movements very easy.”

In a response, President Akufo-Addo promised to liaise with the Regional Minister, to find a solution to his plight.

Regarding the DCE nomination, the President noted that, he was awaiting the recommendations of a government committee tasked to make new nominations for MMDCEs but said, “absolutely, I am the one who has to make the decision.”

“So, obviously the fact you the traditional authorities are strongly supportive of your DCE, it will weigh with me,” he assured.
