Hundred Years of Promoting “African Christianity”, the ARS Story

0

Mankind’s quest to recognise his relationship with God has led him to different ways or mediums of linking to the Supernatural.

Today, the world can boast of enormous religious diversities of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, African Traditional Religion, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism among others. All these religions are unique to a specific society and geographical location.

In deed it is said that a person’s religion or faith is determined by his environment or geographical location.

For instance, while a child’s adherence to Islamic religion would be high in Northern Ghana; same couldn’t be applied to a child born in southern part; since the south unlike the north is dominated by Christians.

Nonetheless, Africans for the matter Ghanaians before the arrival of the Europeans and Arabs have practised their own religion. Christianity, Islam and others were alien to the African.

Africans are so religious that religion has dominated their thinking to such an extent that it has shaped their cultures, their social life, their political organizations and economic activities.

While extremists stiffly reject the foreign religions, others ease up to say, things could only get better through self-identity and integration.

One of such persons is the founder of the Apostles Revelation Society, Prophet Charles Kwabla Nutornti.

His church which started as a prayer group in 1939 has grown into a big society with its unique practises.

The ARS Church is one of the biggest churches to have emerged from the Volta Region with its headquarters in Tadzewu; a once pagan community in the Ketu North District. The Church has branches across Africa and the world with tens of thousand followers.

The Prophet in subtle attempts to indoctrinate the Christian faith among followers of his Fetish father, made Christianity to suit an African Context by allowing members to worship the supreme God using the African culture.

Knowing that key elements of the Ewe culture is singing and drumming, he encouraged theophoric renditions of the local Agbadza, Zigi, Adevu, Borborbor and choral songs in order to resonate with the people.

In addition to the normal Christian sacraments, the church adopted typical Ewe practices including outdooring of twins, widowhood rites, installation of Chiefs, and protection of Pregnancy and acquiring of spirit of one’s profession.

The Prophet through his miracle and healing powers carried a lot of clout, drawing people from all walks of life to his homeland, Tadzewu. The Church established religious communities across the country whose members are charged to live righteous lives to set as examples to nonbelievers. One of such communities Dededo in the Ho West District of the Volta who at a point was adjudged a community with the one of the most disciplined members. Indeed, the Prophet also established basic and higher educational institutions that trains the youth to take leadership roles in future.

Prophet Wovenu has also believed that, every society must worship the Supreme Being through their culture and must not be compelled to adopt doctrines alien to them. Although the church has suffered some schism after the demise of the founder, its doctrines and beliefs are still being preserved.

Wovenu was Born in 1918 and died in 1999. This year the church would be celebrating hundred years of his life and death. They are therefore inviting the general Public to join them in December for the celebrations.

Volta Receives Hockey Equipment in Ho

Volta Hockey Club

The Volta Hockey Association has received equipment from Accra Citizens International Club and the National Coordinator, Dennis Ababio.

The donations were made on Saturday, May 12, 2018 during a day’s invitational Gala organised by the Volta Regional Hockey Association at the Ho Sports Stadium.

The one day Gala had Citizens International Hockey Club from Accra and Koforidua Hockey Club with host Volta Hockey Club engaging in a single round robin game.

A tough first match between Volta Hockey club and Citizens International Club ended 1-0 in favour of the host, after which Volta suffered a 3-0 defeat in the hands of the Koforidua Hockey club. Citizens then went on to play a 1-all game with the Koforidua lads.

It was a moment of joy, when Accra Citizens International Hockey Club donated 16 Hockey sticks to Volta Hockey Club while National Coordinator, Dennis Ababio donated 10 Juvenile Hockey sticks to the Association.

The Citizens also announced the adoption of Volta Hockey Club with the promise of constant support.

According to the Regional Coordinator, Peter Paul Osafo, who doubles as Coach of the Volta Hockey Club, the juvenile sticks are to develop and prepare the junior team for the Inter-Regional Basic Sports in August. He was grateful for the donations and promised to use them to further develop the game in the region.

“I will use this medium to thank the Citizens Club and the National Coordinator for their kind gesture and love shown us. We promise to also do our part; develop the game in this part of the country.”

Paul also confirmed to TalksenseSports (Davis Clottey) that they will have more friendly matches apart from regular training before departing for the Sports Festival.

“We will be camping before the Festival and that is what we will use to build up the team. But this is not the end of our preparation matches. We will travel to Koforidua for another match and probably Accra before the Festival in Cape Coast.”

The Association will expect indigenous players in other clubs for the formation of their squad towards the Sports Festival in July.

Volta’s Hockey team has a history of winning silver at the first ever Sports Festival (Unity Games) held in Accra.

SOA Sees Off Chalenge from Mawuko and Mawuli

0

Stars of Asha (SOA) female and male teams enjoyed victories on Saturday, May 12 in week 13 of the Volta Regional Handball League in Ho.

The female side who started the day’s matches climbed back to 2nd spot with 2 points after beating Mawuko Girls 23-18. Mawuko, also with 2 points but now 3rd after being leapfrogged by SOA had a poor start to the game.

SOA, having beaten their opponents twice already knew exactly what to do and took a 5-0 lead before conceding 1. The half time finished 13-9 in favor of SOA who went into the second quarter with more energy, pace and urgency. They slowed down due to fatigue, which Mawuko took some advantage of but not entirely to secure a win.

SOA will have their last game for the first round next week against Mawuli; an opportunity to close in on leaders TERESCO.

In the male game, Mawuli School failed to replicate last week’s performance with HTU against SOA although the victory margin wasn’t wide. Many who thought they were going to witness another cracker dropped their jaws at some points as Mawuli didn’t show a lot on the day.

SOA again took the lead and had Mawuli fighting back to draw level. The first quarter results (20-15) boosted the moral of both teams to go all out in the second quarter. Mawuli made use of a lot of chances that came their way that put a boot of scare into SOA but the latter quickly recovered and confidently won by 38-31.

SOA are still on the same points (4), with Ho Technical University (HTU) as PROSCO failed to turn up for the second match of the day which resulted in 10 goals and 2 points being awarded to HTU.

Stars of Asha male will play PROSCO at 2:30pm on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Ho Sports Stadium, but after SOA female had engaged Mawuli at 1:00pm.

The Volta Regional Handball Association still has the justifier and preparations towards the forthcoming National Sports Festival in the pipeline.

Lead Advocate for ‘Oti’ Region, Dr. Addeah Dies

0
Dr. Addeah (2nd from left) with leaders of JCC of Oti Movement

Dr. Kwaku Addeah, Secretary of the Joint Consultative Committee, (JCC) of Oti Movement  (proposed new region out of Volta Region) has passed on.

Information available to voltaonlinegh.com suggest the death of the lawyer championing the creation of Oti Region occurred on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

A communiqué by JCC of Oti Movement Leadership under the chairmanship of Krachiwura, Nana Mprah Besemuna II, confirmed his death and sympathised with his family.

“On behalf of the Chairman and members of the JCC, we wish to inform all Nananom, the entire citizens of our proposed Oti Region of the call to eternal rest of our brother and friend, Dr. Kwaku Addeah.

A JCC meeting on Sunday was curtailed to enable the Leadership visit the deceased family to confirm the sad news and commiserate with them.

“The delegation met the family who sadly confirmed the passing on of our Indefatigable Secretary, Lawyer and Spokesman of Oti Movement.”

The statement added “The family has agreed to allow JCC to bring two of our members to help the funeral committee to plan a befitting funeral for our departed brother.”

Dr.Addeah, while alive, played leading roles in the campaign to carve out Oti Region from the Volta Region in order to extend development projects to the northern part of the region.

He believed northern Volta had been neglected for so long and needed to be on its own as a region to attract development.

Whenever he appeared before the nine-member Justice Brobbey Commission of Inquiry, he said the JCC had enough justification for the creation of Oti Region.

In his view, there was “a deliberate British policy not to develop the northern side of the Volta Region and the northern region” as most of the areas of deprivation in Ghana are located in the three regions of the north, extending downwards to parts of the Volta Region.

The Commission of Enquiry was set up by President Nana Akufo-Addo in fulfillment of one of his campaign promises to examine petitions for possible creation of new regions.

1
Mr. woanyah with the shovel

The Volta Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Makafui Kofi Woanyah has backed his words with action as he cut sod for construction of NPP Constituency Office at Chinderi in the Krachi-Nchumuru Constituency.

At a joint ceremony held at Chinderi on Sunday May 13, 2018, the newly elected chairman of the region cut the sod for construction work on the office to start and also joined the Krachi-Nchumuru NPP Women to celebrate Mothers’ Day in the constituency.

He donated 100 bags of cement for the commencement of the project while promising to see to its completion within three months.

Mr. Woanyah made a pledge last month to provide constituency offices and modes of transport in all 26 constituencies to facilitate party work when he embarked on a five-day thank you tour to the constituencies in the region following his landslide victory in the Regional Delegates Conference of the party held on Saturday, April 21, at Hohoe.

The party grassroots in Krachi-Nchumuru expressed their gratitude to the Chairman for prioritising their constituency for the office project and prayed for God’s protection in his efforts towards keeping faith with the grassroots.

The team was led by the Director of Operations, Elikem Sewordor, Deputy Regional Organiser Shelter Adjorlolo, Deputy Regional Youth Organiser Emmanuel Quarshie, and Chairman Castro of Krachi East Constituency.

Ho Central MP Cuts Sod for Ultra-Modern Classroom Block at Tanyigbe

0

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho Central, Hon. Benjamin Kpodo has cut sod for an ultra modern 6-unit classroom block in Tanyigbe Traditional Area in the Ho Municipality.

Pupils of Tanyigbe Anyigbe Basic School who are forced to learn in dilapidated classroom infrastructure, a hindrance to good academic performance in the area, will soon get relief after the completion of the MP’s project.

The one-storey classroom block project comprising headteacher’s office, toilet, library and store room space has been awarded to LISIT Company Limited and scheduled to be completed within nine months with an estimated cost of GHC525, 000.00 (expected to be expended on foundation to roofing level).

Speaking at a ceremony to cut sod for the project, Mr. Kpodo said although he makes efforts to provide materials to meet the needs of schools in the area to improve on Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, not much has been achieved and that has called for the construction of such facility to motivate teaching and learning.

He said as part of quality education to enhance development, children in the area need modern academic environment with the needed materials provided to motivate them to stay at school to perform well just like the big schools.

He noted that he is available to support the traditional leaders and teachers to ensure quality education in the area.  He also called on parents to play their roles well in raising responsible future leaders.

The MP who is also a native of the area received a rousing welcome from the chiefs, teachers and the entire community at the ceremony to cut the sod.

Acting Volta Regional Director of Education, John Kodzo Teku was among other dignitaries who graced the event.  He commended the MP for his tremendous contributions towards education in the region as a whole.

Mr. Teku welcomed the project saying, such facility will help motivate the pupils to be regular in school, thus, improve on their academic works.

He used the opportunity to call on philanthropists and stakeholders to come on board to support the pupils with books for the library and any other needed teaching and learning materials.

Global Evangelical Church, Fiave Holds Dinner Party for Mothers Next Year

0
Rev. Agbenuvor with some members of Women Ministry, GEC-Fiave

Rev. I.C Agbenuvor, Parish Pastor, Global Evangelical Church, Ho Fiave Victory Chapel has disclosed that the church will hold dinner party for mothers in the church on Mother’s Day next  year.

He made the disclosure during Sunday Service on May 13 when he celebrated women of the church on the occasion set aside to celebrate mothers and by extension, women across the globe.

Rev. Agbenuvor before giving the sermon of the day, invited couples who were in church together and gave husbands the chance to celebrate their wives and they in turn, testified of how great an asset their wives have been to them and their family.

The men also wished all mothers and women in the church well and prayed for God’s protection and guidance over their lives.

Rev. Agbenuvor in a sermon themed, Building the Kingdom and Making Disciples as Women, called on mothers and women to avail themselves to God to use them to effect positive impacts wherever they find themselves.

According to him, ‘there are things women can do better than men and women can affect lives more than men.”

He made reference to how some women work hard; give their all to support their children while the men of the homes run around doing other things at the expense of the families.

He quoted Judges 5:6-7 to support his claim of the important roles women play in affecting lives and added, for a woman to be seen doing the kingdom business, she must be available, calculated and organised, have a defined assignment, be a dreamer who masters her territory and be daring and ready to contend for her faith.

Meanwhile, the Church will later this afternoon, hold a seminar on Healthy Living that will bring experts and dieticians together to speak to congregants. The seminar will be preceded by a health screening exercise at the church premises to know the health status of members.

Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, is an occasion that celebrates motherhood. The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Ann Jarvis, a peace activist who believed a mother is the one who has done more for a person than anyone in the world, held a memorial for her mother.

We Are Too Accommodating-Prof. Karikari

0
Prof. Kwame Karikari

Prof. Kwame Karikari, Board Chair, Graphic Communications Group has challenged the citizenry to rise up and demand for their rights from public officers.

Prof. Karikari who moderated a training workshop on inequality from 11th– 12th May in Ho, Volta Region said there is a huge disparity between the rich and poor and those put at the helm of affairs are virtually making no efforts to bridge this gap but widening it yet, Ghanaians tolerate them.

The two-day capacity building workshop for media and civil society organisations (CSOs) on inequality in Ghana was jointly organised by international non-governmental  organisation (NGOs ) including UNICEF, OXFAM, SEND-Ghana and the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) that champion the fight against inequalities in health systems, education, etc.

The training sought to increase capacity of the media and CSOs on inequality and how best to advocate for the fight against it.

Prof. Karikari blamed the two ruling parties in the Fourth Republic, the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress that they scramble for power only and not for social change that will reduce the inequality that stares in the face of majority of Ghanaians.

He said until the people visit local assemblies, their members of parliament, etc, and demand fair distribution of national resources, “democracy is illusive” because everyone has one vote during elections but when it comes to resources, the few elites get the larger share.

Justice Baidoo

Social Policy Specialist at UNICEF, Mr. Charlse Dzradosi in his presentation explained it became necessary for the Organisation to collaborate with the other partners because inequality affects Ghanaians, young and old and prevails in every sector of the economy.

He decried the inequality in the health sector saying, 54% of qualified doctors are in the nation’s capital, the rest spread around the other capitals with few in the rural areas.

Mr. Dzradosi said there is the need for journalists to identify the missing links in government’s policies and programmes, ask the right questions to ensure even distribution noting, “nobody should be poor because of where they are living.”

Mr. Sulemana

Mr. Zakaria Sulemana, OXFAM Ghana disclosed that though Ghana has made economic gains over the years, the gap between the few rich and the majority poor keeps widening and inequality “rising to unacceptable heights.”

To him, as inequality manifests in income, gender, disability among others, it threatens long-term social and economic development, destroys self worth and leads to poverty, social unrest, crime, disease, etc.

He therefore, called on the media and CSOs to collaborate with NGOs in the fight against inequality in the country, be it economic, social, political or spatial to make Ghana, a better place for all.

Meanwhile, Justice Baidoo, Communications Consultant took the media through possible ways of identifying issues of inequality and reporting on them using best practices to engender the right responses.
