A Clergyman has cautioned the youth to stay away from any activity that may result in chaos and confusion, in order not to be branded as agents of destruction.

Apostle General Emmanuel Astiko, Founder and Leader of Power Mission Church International (PMCI), was addressing the closing ceremony of a programme for over 650 children at the church’s headquarters on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Dzodze in the Volta Region.

The four-day programme was dubbed: “Youth – Future leaders of Ghana”.

Participants were drawn from six churches in the district. It was organised and sponsored by the Power Mission Church International.

He cautioned the youth to remain resolute and not to allow themselves, to be used to foment trouble and that they should also endeavour to live exemplary lives for their peer groups to emulate.

The “Man of God” observed that fomenting chaos and confusion to serve anyone’s political agenda, would not augur well for the country, and used the platform to ask the youth not to adhere to any programme by politicians that may cause mayhem.

He therefore, advised them to be law-abiding and work vigorously to project good image of the youth, adding, “Be resolute and say no to any form of actions that would mar your future career.”

He also cautioned Ghanaians to desist from undermining, backbiting and any other act, which could lead to litigation or conflicts, since the country need peace at all times, “before, during and after every election periods”.

Wallahs Academy Holds 10th Graduation Ceremony

0

Wallahs Academy Senior High School, a private senior high school in Ho, Volta Region has held the tenth graduation ceremony for its students on Saturday, June 16, 2018 on the school’s premises.

The graduation ceremony was held for 100 students, out of which 51 were males and 49 females for successful completion of their three-year senior high school programmes.

Wallahs Academy was established on 16th October, 2006 to provide an alternative for qualified junior high school graduates who could not gain admission into the public’s choked senoir high schools.

Though it started with nine students and seven teachers, it currently has a student population of over 440 and 40 workers made up of 19 non-teaching staff, and 21 teaching staff, superintended by a headmaster, an administrator, and three assistant headmasters.

The headmaster of the school, Frank Coffie Snr. thanked the almighty God for His grace and blessings for seeing the school through its ten years journey and asked for His continued protection.

He congratulated the students and urged them to let love lead them in all their activities to be able to give spiritual support to one another in times of need.

He encouraged them to always use the motto of the school as their walking stick and serve as good ambassadors of the school wherever they find themselves.

The Proprietor of the School, Maxwell Worlanyo Affram touted the achievements of the school saying, it has produced excellent students that contributed to the country’s human resource base since its establishment.

He said education is the bedrock of every developed country and urged government to continue to invest in the education of the citizenry while the private sector also plays it role in complementing government’s efforts.

The Volta Regional Director of Education, Madam Enyonam Afi Amafuga said the theme “Ten Years of Quality Private Senior High Education: Achievement, Challenges, and Prospects” could be described as very apt and appropriate.

Madam Amafuga

According to her, it re-echoes the sacrifices and commitment that the management and other stakeholders in education, especially the government of the day have been making to ensure private education is very affordable in the country.

She said though there may be challenges, investment made in the educational sector to promote the growth and produce quality future leaders are evident.

She encouraged the continuing students to eschew all forms of social vices including pilfering, promiscuity, same sex relationship and other forms of ungodly act that would destroy their personal well-being and the social and moral fiber of the country’s cultural heritage.

Madam Amafuga noted that as students, their core objective is to learn hard so as to excel in their examination and called for the existence of a healthy relationship between the staff and the students to continuously promote the good image of the school.

The Outgoing School Prefect, Desmond Borbor on behalf of the graduands expressed appreciation to the staff for their selfless dedication and total commitment which made their dreams of having quality senior high education to come to pass.

Help to Transform Wli Falls-Tourism Minister Tells Chiefs

0
Madam Afeku speaking to the media

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Catherine Afeku has called on traditional leaders and the management committee of Wli Waterfalls to support her and the Ministry to restructure the Waterfalls and make it Ghana’s tourism haven.

According to her, the Waterfalls remains one of the most preferred tourist destination sites despite its current dilapidated state, expressing hope that her planned interventions will no doubt, yield expected results.

The Wli Waterfalls, the highest waterfall in West Africa and known locally as Agumatsa Waterfalls – meaning, “Allow Me to Flow,” is located in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.

Tourism Minister addressing the people

Though the Falls attract tourists from across the world who flock there because of the stunning nature of the waterfall as well as the serene environment, management of the Falls fails to maintain the site to attract more tourists.

Madam Afeku who observed the poor conditions at the Falls including the absence of sanitary facility, rest stop among others as factors that turn away tourists from the Falls, asked for the support and cooperation from the chiefs and people to make the restructuring work.

The Minister made the call when she visited the Falls as part of a tour of some tourist sites in the region. She was accompanied by some officials from the Ministry and three tourist Ambassadors, Edem, Rapper, Lucky Mensah, Highlife Musician and Van Vicker, an Actor.

According to her, the situation at the Falls (similar to that of other tourist sites in the country) is as a result of poor management of revenues.

She explained that host communities of tourist sites have management committees who have employed tour guides and staff who collect revenues, part of which must be used to maintain the sites yet there is little to show for them.

This, she noted is not in the best interest of the communities, tourist sites, the tourists and the entire country.
Madam Afeku therefore mentioned that a new system will see the deployment of an automated payment system to maximise revenue generation.

Revenue generated would be shared among key stakeholders with majority been directed into improvement of the Waterfall and other facilities in the Wli enclave.

A Senior Tour Guide at the Waterfalls, Emmanuel Gblorkpor thanked the Minister for her plans to re-position the Falls and on behalf of the whole stakeholders of the site, pledged maximum support to the new arrangements.

Table Tennis Assoc. scouts for Players to Represent Volta at National Sports Festival

0

The search for the best backhand and forehand experts to represent the Volta Region in Table Tennis at the National Sports Festival is scheduled to come off on Saturday, June 16, 2018.

Scheduled to start at 11am at the Centre for National Culture in Denu, players from schools as well as communities across the Volta region are expected to battle for places at the Sports Festival in Cape Coast.

The one day single round robin Justifier which seeks to rank the players will also serve as a selection process for the National Table Tennis League next month with the best of five (5) games per match.

Head Coach of the Regional Table Tennis Association, David Senyo Ahiaba speaks to TalksenseSports ahead of the preparation for the two upcoming events.

“We are preparing for the Sports Festival, so it is a Justifier. For the boys, I am expecting 15 and the girls, about 10. The ones to win and score more points are the ones to be considered and we will use that to rank them. We actually want to use the same justifier to rank them and select players for the National table tennis League next month. So the first three will go to the Sports festival but for the league, they’ve asked for eight players. So as and when the league progresses, we add the rest of the players.”

Players who represented the region at last year’s edition at Kumasi managed 3rd places in the group stages of both male and female categories, failing to progress to the Semifinals. They were though ranked 5th overall at the end of the Festival.

The enthusiastic Association is therefore striving to redeem themselves at Cape Coast from July 29 to August 9, 2018.

We Want a Credible Bill- RTI Coalition

0
Kwesi Boateng Assumeng, Programme Officer of GACC

The RTI Coalition consisting of Ghana Anti- Corruption Coalition (GACC), Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) and SEND-Ghana leading the Right to Information (RTI) Action Campaign, an advocacy for the passage of the RTI Bill into Law has identified some shortfalls in the Bill which is currently before parliament.

The RTI Bill which is expected to make credible information easily accessible by the media and every Ghanaian to contribute to anti-corruption in the country, has been in parliament for well over 17 years because successive governments have failed to implement it despite the numerous assurances.

Even though progress has been made resulting in laying of a report before Parliament on the Bill by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs on May 23 and the subsequent second reading of the Bill on June 7, the campaigners have kicked against some portions of the Bill which they want taken off entirely or reviewed to ensure a credible Bill.

This came to light at a media engagement on Wednesday, June 13, in Ho, Volta Region to sensitise media persons on the RTI Bill 2018.

Participants at the event

Mr. Kwesi Boateng Assumeng, Programme Officer, GACC said passing the Bill into law with clauses such as 12 and 13 which border on exempt existing with tax liability, tax returns and withholding information that is in process regarding opinion, report or recommendation, which are inconsistent with the Bill, implies that “the RTI Bill is defeated.”

According to him, there should be serious consideration for the principles of maximum disclosure and Proactive disclosure which provide for public institutions to make updated information readily available to the citizenry.

The Campaign also sought to have Parliament’s interpretation on the Office of the President in the exempt clause provided in clause 5.

Mr Assumeng said there are Ministry of Special Initiative, Ghana Aids Commission, MASLOC among others under the Office of the President and lumping them together without any proper definition would amount to “Denial Bill or Law.”

“The Office of the President should be interpreted. Are we only talking about the Presidency or it’s all encompassing; capturing or bothering on all the other myriad of agencies that fall directly under the Office of the Presidency? If we leave it as it is, it is very problematic and you have agencies that fall directly under the Office of the President exempting information to say that, the law says these are exempt clauses so we cannot make it available. We’re saying, that should be rightly defined under the current Bill.”

He however applauded the Committee for working on few of the proposals including the fee- based where applicants will not pay except for retrieval and peculiar services and reducing the number of days an applicant can gain access to information.

The Executive Secretary, GACC, Mrs Beauty Emefa Narteh underscored the importance of the RTI Bill to the media industry as well as to every individual in Ghana.

She therefore asked the participants to take the training as a learning process so as to undertake informed programmes and reports in throwing their weight behind the efforts in getting a credible Bill or Law for the overall good of the citizenry.

Enterprise Ghana Invests over USD 50, 000 in Volta Region

0
Judith Attamah being awarded

Enterprise Ghana, a social programme with the aim to connect US investors to entrepreneurs in the Volta Region with the purpose of eradicating poverty, has supported a local Bee Farmer with an amount of GHS75, 000 for business expansion in addition to 4 other applicants who would be receiving various forms of support.

Madam Judith Akos Attamah of Honeyworld Honey from JA24 Foods Company operating in Greater Accra and Volta regions got awarded after a critical survey conducted on her business by the investors.

The others, Vozbeth K. Azumah and Napoleon Edem Donkor would receive funds to run a pilot of their project while Mabel Wurah and Florence Hini-Yevu-Agbi would receive some funds as loan to run their businesses.

According to Mr. Clint Morse, one of the investors, Volta Region is their preferred destination to invest because the region has a lot of business potentials mostly in the agriculture sector and that necessitated the project to financially support small scale business owners in the region to expand their businesses and create job opportunities.

Participants at the event

He said their first step in the region is to support the growth of businesses in the Ho municipality and its environs and then in the future revamp collapsing businesses across the region as a whole.

Clint indicated that 40 per cent of profits out of the GHS75,000 will go to Enterprise Ghana and 60 per cent to the beneficiary (JA24 Foods) to run the bee farming.

Speaking at a short meeting to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the excited beneficiary (Judith Attamah) noted that she has been in the system over the past five years yet her company could not expand nor attract publicity due to financial difficulties.

She expressed hope that with the support from Enterprise Ghana and its U.S partners, her company will see an expansion, increase in production and employment.

Judith revealed that JA24 Farms would purchase, out of the money, a van or pick-up to ensure smooth delivery of the honey to its customers.

About the Project and Way Forward

EB Consult coordinated the press launch of Enterprise Ghana, on March 26, 2018. Advertisements followed on radio and social media platforms about the investment opportunity being provided by Enterprise Ghana.

About 100 applications were received by the close of business day of April 24, 2018. The team reviewed all the applications and reduced the number of applicants to 12.

At a selection interview earlier this month, Judith Attamah of JA24 Farms emerged the overall winner with the other four applicants who would receive supports worth over $50,000.

Board of Directors has been commissioned by the investors to oversee the business, and it would engage more young entrepreneurs mostly in the Agriculture sector in the region with similar amount or more in the future.
