Asogli Chief Charges Politicians to Complete Abandoned Projects

Chief of Ho Dome and Warlord of Asogli State in the Volta  Region, Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, has called on politicians to move away from abandoning projects started by previous governments to completing them to serve the interest of the citizenry.

He decried the practice where various projects being undertaken across the country are stalled and entirely new ones started when different governments come to power, describing it as a disservice to the people and a drain on the state’s resources.

Togbe Howusu made the call when former President John Dramani Mahama who is contesting the Presidential primaries of the largest opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday, called on him at the Asogli Palace in Ho to announce his presence in the constituency.

The visit to the Ho Central Constituency by Mr. Mahama formed part of his planned one week (which was cut short following the violence that characterised the polling process during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election) tour of the Volta Region to meet with delegates of the party and ask for their support to win the upcoming primaries in order to lead the party in the 2020 general elections.

Togbe Howusu XII in welcoming the NDC Presidential hopeful in the absence of the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV, advised that whoever becomes elected as president of the nation has the responsibility to complete all abandoned projects.

He tasked the NDC to ensure it holds the primaries in a peaceful manner and called on candidates who will not emerge winners to rally behind whoever will be elected.

Meanwhile, Mr. John Mahama urged the delegates to vote for him by thumb-printing number 3 on the ballot paper in the upcoming primaries to lead the party to victory in the 2020 elections.

He appealed to them to disregard the claim that the “NDC is treating the Volta Region as a wife that has been locked and only visited when needed and so the wife should be open and allowed to see other men,” saying, now, “the man she has found has totally neglected her.”

The former President claimed projects started by his government had been abandoned by the current administration.

Citing the regional capital, he said the dual carriage road design which was expected to have included a bridge and an interchange at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) junction to avoid accidents on the road have been left out in the ongoing construction.

Mr. Mahama disclosed that the NDC was working on Prof Kwesi Botchey Committee’s report and will be coming back strong and better to win power from the New Patriotic Party and he is the best candidate to lead the party.

“The time to take power from the NPP is 2020 not 2024 that is why we have to go with someone who is known by the people and who can work to make life worth living for the citizens.”

Mama-Akura D/A Basic School in the Nkwanta North District of the Volta Region is crying for support for infrastructure to enhance quality education in the school.

A visit to the school by the reporter revealed that the school which has a population of over 400 lacks text books, classrooms, computer and science laboratories, and other teaching and learning materials.

As a result of the unavailability of classrooms, pupils from junior high school (JHS) 1-3 study under a temporary structure roofed with thatch while those from Kindergarten 1 to primary 3 go through the daily ordeal of sitting and writing on the floor.

In an interview with the Head teacher of the school, Mr Francis Ngangbi, he disclosed that the lack of basic educational materials was seriously affecting academic activities as teaching and learning in the school took place in unfavourable environment.

Mr Ngangbi lamented that the situation was disadvantageous to the pupils who often got distracted during lessons due to the lack of classroom and furniture among others because they would be sitting in for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with other pupils from privileged schools.

He therefore appealed to government and individuals to help provide furniture for the pupils.

Some of the pupils  who spoke to Voltaonlinegh  about the situation in their school appealed to the district assembly, non-governmental organisation,  philanthropists  and well meaning Ghanaians to come to their aid to improve teaching and learning in the school.

Traders at Nkwanta market in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Volta Region have appealed to the Assembly to provide them with security and warehouse for their wares.

The organiser of the traders’ association, Madam Fuseini Sahadatu identified the absence of security post and storerooms in the market as contributing to the increase in theft in the market which was making traders lose their capital.

She made the appeal when the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly handed over GH¢150,000 construction project to Clap Larrey Company Limited for the construction of a 10-seater toilet facility in the market and as well, the renovation of sheds that were razed down by fire some years ago.

Divorced Woman Commits Suicide to End It All

By: Voltaonlinegh.com |

A woman, aged 35, last weekend committed suicide by hanging to end it all, three months after the collapse of her marriage at Low Cost, a suburb of Aflao.

Elizabeth Amuzu Seshie was a trader and a mother of four.

A family source told the Ghana News Agency that the deceased has been married to her husband, named withheld, for over 18 years, yielding four kids between them.

The source said the deceased, about three months ago, vacated the matrimonial home as the relationship hit a snag after some intermittent misunderstandings in the marriage, leaving all the kids with the man.

According to the source, the deceased last Friday, January 25, this year, paid a visit to her former marital home but met only her eldest daughter, aged about 16, while the husband, a Porter, was absent.

The deceased allegedly sent her unsuspecting daughter on an errand outside the house, only for her to return and to discover the deceased hanging on a nylon rope tied to the roofing rafters in the bathroom of the house dead.

Mr. Eric Vondee, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASPOL), who is the Aflao District Crime officer, confirmed the story, saying the police was alerted by the BNI outfit at about 1630 hours about the incident last Friday.

He said he led a police team and found the body hanging with its neck in the nylon rope and tied to a roofing rafter in the bathroom of the house, with the tongue stretched out of the mouth.

Mr. Vondee said a kitchen stool and a plastic chair were found in fallen positions below the hanging body, suggesting the deceased climbed the two to tie the rope to the rafters to hang herself.

He said urine splashes were also visible on the floor below the body, meaning, she urinated while in pains.

The District Crime Officer said except the rope marks on the neck, he said there no marks of violence on the boy.

He said the body is being kept in the Ketu South Municipal Hospital morgue at Aflao, pending further investigations.

The Gbɔta clan of Mafi (Avakpedome and Tsetsekpo) in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region has handed over a-1,000 acre of land to INDO-Ghana Agro Ltd, an Indian farming firm for the production of vegetables.

The handing over took place on Tuesday, January 29 amidst dancing and drumming with the hope this would encourage their youth to venture into agriculture as they work hand in hand with the Indian farmers.

In a speech read by Mama Amewuame III, Queen mother of Avakpedome, she said the construction of the Akosombo and Kpong dams had left the Tongu communities in abject poverty as they were predominantly fishermen and oyster pickers and urged the investors to inculcate the habit of farming in their youth.

The Chief Executive Officer of the firm, Siddharth Mohindroo explained the firm has 2 goals, setting up a model farm and second, creating employment and other opportunities for growth and development for the Central Tongu youth.

“We seek to establish a model farm with our highly experienced Indian farmers and through operational efficiency.”

“We also want to involve the local people of Adidome and Central Tongu in the growth story by having them work with us grow this organisation,” he added.

The District Chief Executive for the area, Thomas Moore Zonyrah who led the farmers to the place asked for a good working relationship between the locals and the farmers and urged the youth to learn whatever farming techniques they could from them.

He warned that the project “is not a party project” but a project for the youth of Central Tongu and that no party member should be seen intimidating people they think do not belong to the NPP but working on the farm.

Mafi Avakpedome and Mafi Tsetsekpo are situated along the lower Volta basin between the sacred forest of Koleve, Dzodzeve and Avakpe.

First Lady Launches “Free to Shine” Campaign to Eliminate Mother to Child HIV Transmission

0

By: Voltaonlinegh.com |

The First Lady of the Republic, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo has launched the Free to Shine Campaign to speed up the elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV.

This campaign is a continental initiative of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV and AIDS, the African Union and the UNAIDS.

The Free to Shine Campaign, according to the First Lady, will deepen efforts and make it possible to end HIV and AIDS in children in Ghana within the next two years.

Collaborating with the Ghana Aids Commission, the campaign was launched under the theme, “Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission: The Key to an HIV-Free Generation and Keeping Mothers Alive.”

“In line with this theme, the Campaign seeks to achieve zero HIV infection in children by 2020, end AIDS in children by 2030 and keep infected mothers alive and healthy,” she disclosed.

She indicated due to the increased demand for services that will come with the campaign, “it is therefore very critical that we remove all bottlenecks associated with the supply side, to meet the expected increase in demand.”

“As a mother myself, I am pretty confident that any mother will do whatever it takes, to ensure that they have healthy children, who can live life to the fullest. This can be achieved quite simply. Test, know your status and treat.”

She continued that, several years ago, HIV was a death sentence – treatment was not available. At the time, it was a fearful and futile exercise to test and know your status. Even when you knew, you kept quiet about your status because of stigma.

“If you test positive, know that you are not alone because there are nearly 40 million people living with HIV globally. The most important thing is to adhere to antiretroviral treatment. Adhering to treatment will also ensure that you give birth to an HIV-free baby who will live and grow free of HIV.”

She also called on the leadership of the Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana and the Association of Private Health Providers, religious and traditional leaders, development partners and the private sector to support the Campaign and encouraged men to support their pregnant wives to test for HIV.
