Kpenoe Chiefs Demand Relocation of Volta Military Range

Togbe Kotoku XI showing the bullets to the camera

By: Ewoenam Kpodo | Voltaonlinegh |

Chiefs of Kpenoe Traditional Area, one of the set-ups of Asogli State in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region have demanded the immediate relocation of the shooting range of the 66 Artillery Regiment (Volta Barracks) over fears for citizens’ lives.

The chiefs said they feared that the continuous presence of the military range on their land would put the lives of people in the community at risk judging from how the military officers  operate in the area.

At a press conference organised on Tuesday morning, Paramount Chief of the area, Togbe Kotoku XI appealed to the government to pay heed to their demand to forestall any unfortunate happenings in future.

Togbe Kotoku who decried operations of soldiers in the traditional area said, “we experience bullets flying into the community” without any information and “this is relatively unsafe for us and we feel our lives are not safe.”

“These very bullets were handpicked from the community. We handpicked them. This is not a bullet of single barrel but a bullet coming from the shooting range and the military. Our lives are not safe and for that matter, we’re requesting that the shooting range be relocated,” Togbe said while showing bullets to the cameras.

The chiefs also accused the military of extending the boundaries of the 483.34-acre of land (formerly used for cocoa, coffee and timber cultivation) the area had given to government (with no proper compensation) some 50 years ago, to a little over 1,000 acres by erecting boundary poles without any further discussions with the chiefs and people of the area.

This they said had deprived the citizens especially the youth of farmland and “this forced the people to go in there to crack stone in the process of getting a livelihood” but the military had started meeting that with brutalities.

Togbe Kotoku who supported his claims with photographs of supposed victims of military brutalities said he directed for complaints to be lodged with the police and who later referred them to the military but nothing has since been done.

One citizen named Rev. Elikplim Atidigah  who was mentioned as victim of military brutalities showed a medical form he obtained  from the 37 Military Hospital in Accra last month following an alleged assault on him.

According to Rev. Atidigah, he went to his farm but the soldiers claiming ownership of the area, accosted him and beat him up severely leaving scars on him.

[Article] Why We Cannot Continue Wasting Our Waste

0

By: Godfred Nelson |

Do you know the amount of waste in kilograms you personally produce each day? What about where the waste you produce goes to be deposited finally?

An average Ghanaian produces about 0.51kg of waste per day, this is according to research by the World Bank published in the What a Waste 2.0 Report on Global Waste Generation and Management, while Sub-Saharan Africa generates in all about 174million tonnes of waste. This figure is expected to triple by 2050 with the growing trends of populations in the region.

While this figure may look quite minimal when considered on individual basis, it is an estimably huge when considered in the grand scheme of the population of the entire country.

It is May, and June is around the corner; torrential rains, choked gutters, an almost clueless meteorological agency and a painfully ill-equipped disaster management organisation admix to compound the woes of Ghanaians in flood prone areas.

The volumes of waste produced each day for now cannot be reduced especially with increasing population trends. It can only see an upsurge. While this can be a curse if left unmanaged, it is a blessing in disguise.

When we continue to waste waste as we do in this country, we cannot pay good attention to the economic value it brings.

In his State of the Nation’s Address earlier this year, President Akufo-Addo projected a revenue generation of about 2 billion Ghana cedis annually from recycling plastic wastes.

On creating lots of jobs, he also mentioned that about 82 per cent of plastic wastes would be recovered and recycled into value added products for the sub region. While this is quite ambitious, it is a commendable projection in dealing with waste.

We must be more innovative on the ground with waste collection to start with; waste must be well compartmentalised from homes and streets even before being disposed.

Comparing North America to Sub-Saharan Africa, a population of 359 million as at 2016, produced almost twice the waste produced by the 1.03 billion people in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This points out a very important fact, that is, the challenge with waste is not its volume of generation but the end use of the waste. Most developed countries produce more waste, but they have management technology and tools to match the generation, reason why there is little or no littering.

Majority of waste produced globally is from organic sources, food and green wastes-about 43 per cent of global waste. This is an opportunity for young people in technology and climate smart agriculture start ups to capitalise on for manure and organic fertiliser production.

Phone apps for such as “I Got Waste” developed and used by a start up in India can be developed to track the production, collection, disposal and hence the reuse of these organic wastes. This will require the readiness of venture capitalists and government to invest in start-ups who are willing to venture into waste management.

The end uses of waste are innumerable though its effects when left poorly managed are dire. The opportunities are limitless if heed can be paid to the dynamics of waste generation and management.

It is more expensive to the natural environment than it is to recycle and reuse waste, if the consideration for a good waste recycling regime is solely financial implications.

Most waste produced in the country ends up in the natural environment, soil, water bodies and so on, causing an increase in green house gas emissions thereby increasing mean surface temperatures.

Recently, I read on BBC news portal about how a whale was washed ashore and 26kg of plastic waste was discovered in its gut, on the same portal I read of how the deepest ocean dive discovered plastic wastes on the ocean bed.

The soil contains about three times the amount of carbon dioxide and other green house gases as in the atmosphere. The reason is partly because of bad waste disposal activities of man. When waste ends up in the soil, crop production and yields are at risk.

The choice as to what to do with the wastes we generate remain ours, while millions can be made from recycling and reusing them, millions more will be lost through the negative impacts of waste on health and productivity of the masses when left unmanaged.

By: KALD | Voltaonlinegh |

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta, in the Volta Region, Godwin Edudzi Effah has allocated an old building for the start of immediate renovation works to fit the facility as a new fire station to serve the municipality.

Mr. Effah on Friday led a team of officers from the Ghana National Fire Service headquarters to the defunct PWD premises (part of which currently houses the Ghana Highway Authority) for assessment of the facility following several consultations with stakeholders.

This has become necessary as the existing fire station (located at Anloga) which served the municipality has now been carved out into the newly inaugurated Anloga District, thus, leaving the Keta Municipality with no fire station.

The MCE acknowledged the stakeholders for helping the process which arrived at the suitable choice and strategic location for rapid response by the Fire Service during emergencies and noted that all other necessary facilitations have been made awaiting the renovation of the facility in order for Keta to have a new station by June.

“We had a fire station which is now located within the newly created Anloga District Assembly. Owing to this, there is the need that Keta Municipal Assembly gets its own fire station. I can assure you that the renovation works on the building would be completed by the end of June for handing over to the Ghana National Fire Service.”

Deputy Chief Fire Officer in charge of Logistics, Mr. Samuel Brenya after the inspection by the team, accepted the facility saying, “well, the facility is suitable and quite strategic for the work.”

“But as to when we shall resume work here, it’s left to the Assembly to finish with the renovation works quickly, which the MCE has promised to ensure,” Mr. Brenya noted.

Kalakpa is Crying for You, Help Us – Park Manager

0

By: Ewoenam Kpodo | Voltaonlinegh |

Park Manager, Kalakpa Resource Reserve, Samuel Darko-Akonor has called on chiefs and people of Abutia  and Adaklu  communities where the Reserve is located to lend their  support to surmount hurdles in protecting and conserving  the Park.

Mr. Darko-Akonor said officers and rangers faced difficult situations in addition to trekking long distances “on rugged terrain and in harsh weather conditions to combat illegalities.”

“In the discharge of our field duties, we face open confrontations from poachers, loggers of timber, cattle herders, illegal farmers and attacks by local communities, which in some cases result in casualties.”

According to him, one major challenge in managing the Park was dealing with the over 25 settlement of about 3,000 people living in the Reserve with low staff strength who are without the proper tools to deal with the “emerging dynamics in forest protection and conservation.”

The Park Manager therefore called for concerted efforts stop Kalakpa Resource Reserve from being a hotbed of illegalities.

“I will appeal to our traditional and community leaders and the good citizens of Abutia and Adaklu to join Management with one voice in educating those communities living in and around the Reserve on the effects of environmental degradation being caused by them from practices such as logging, charcoal production, poaching, farming, cattle grazing, and above all the unwarranted and frequent attacks on staff who enforce regulations.”

Mr. Darko-Akonor said these in a welcome address on the occasion of the inauguration of a new office building at the Park Headquarters of the Kalakpa Resource Reserve at Abutia on Thursday.

The building was dedicated to those who suffered casualties while protecting the Park including Victor Sesi in whose memory a monument was unveiled on the day.

Paramount Chief of Abutia Traditional Area, Togbe Abutia Kodzo Gidi V in a speech, gave government and management of Kalakpa Resource Reserve, 7-month ultimatum to evict and/or resettle the 25 settlements in the reserve or risk a take-over of the Park by the community.

Togbe Gidi said “it’s surprising, landowners have moved out but settlers remain there to do all the illegalities” yet successive governments had since 1975, failed to “relocate all settlers from Kalakpa Reserve for staff to work.”

“By end of this year, if the settlers don’t move out, our ancestors waged war that land and we will be forced to take it back,” he warned.

District Chief Executive for Ho West, Ernest Victor Apau pledged government’s commitment in addressing the issues of illegalities taking place in the Reserve and called for the support of citizens to arrest the situation and to relocate settlers living there in order to conserve the Park.

Executive Director, Wildlife Division, Nana Kofi Adu-Nsiah who noted the concerns raised by earlier speakers promised that his outfit would do its best and with the help of the traditional area, see Kalakpa to the level it ought to be.

Nana Adu-Nsiah said the Division was working things out to relocate settlers in the Reserve and other reserves across the country adding that, a 2-million USD discussion was ongoing and “as soon as we get the funds, we’ll raise the awareness to get them out.”

He also disclosed that 4 drones had been procured with a set of people going for drones training for effecting monitoring of illegal activities in the reserves.

Kalakpa Resource Reserve covers about 32,020 hectares of land stretching from Abutia (Ho West) to Adaklu (Adaklu District) in the Volta Region. It serves as home to rare animals including buffalos, bird species, and a variety of plants of economic importance.
