GJA–Volta Media Awards Returns After COVID Break

The Volta Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA–Volta) has relaunched the Volta GJA Media Awards, reviving a flagship initiative that honours professionalism, ethical standards, and excellence in journalism across the region.

The awards, first instituted in 2017, successfully ran until 2019 before taking a break during the COVID-19 disruptions. But after five years, the fourth edition of event will held under the theme “Harnessing the Tourism Potentials of Ghana into the Future – Positioning the Volta Region as the New Frontier.” The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, in Ho.

Regional Chairman of GJA–Volta, Dr Harrison Kofi Belley, said the awards are intended to celebrate practitioners who have distinguished themselves through ethical and professional journalism, contributing significantly to the development of the Volta Region. He noted that the awards are open to journalists working in print, electronic, and online media.

Nominations will open on Monday, September 7, 2026, and close on Friday, October 2, 2026, covering works published or broadcast between January 2020 and July 31, 2026.

The 13 competitive categories include Sports Reporting, Education, Business and Economics, Health, Environment and Science, Agriculture, Gender and Disability, Tourism and Arts, Community Reporting, Best Radio and TV Programme, Best Student Journalist of the Year, GJA/Rasmuta Most Promising Journalist of the Year and GJA/Hon. James Gunu Journalist of the Year.

The Best Student Journalist of the Year category is open to students of accredited journalism and communication training institutions in the region. The GJA Rasmuta Most Promising Journalist of the Year award has been instituted in memory of the late broadcaster, Divine Nyasorgbor, while the GJA Hon. James Gunu Journalist of the Year will honour outstanding journalistic performance.

In addition, Special Recognition Awards will be presented to individuals and organisations that have supported journalism and contributed to the growth of the media industry in the Volta Region.

Chairman of the Awards Vetting Committee, Mr Anthony Bells Kafui Kanyi, who pioneered the awards during his tenure as Regional Chairman, expressed delight at their revival. He emphasised that recognition and appreciation of practitioners is crucial for sustaining professional standards and motivating excellence in journalism.

He further urged practitioners, institutions, and stakeholders to support the initiative, stressing that the return of the awards presents an opportunity to restore and build on the reputation of the GJA in the Volta Region.

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Hubert Mawuli Yevu-Agbi, pledged the committee’s commitment to ensuring a successful event, while appealing for collective support from individuals, institutions, and organisations.

The ceremony is expected to bring together journalists, media owners, government officials, corporate institutions, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to celebrate excellence and promote higher professional standards in journalism across the Volta Region.
