The leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Volta Region chapter has announced that the 2019 edition of the Awards, the third in series would feature a new addition to the categories to celebrate a deserving journalist with the coveted Overall Regional Journalist Award.
This new category follows the Most Promising Journalist Award which was introduced in the 2nd edition of the Awards by the pacesetter region.
Chairman, GJA-Volta, A.B. Kafui Kanyi who made this known on Monday at the launch of the main event expected to take place on October 5, 2019, urged members to put in extra work to merit the two non-competitive awards.
Mr. Kanyi noted that the Overall Regional Journalist 2019 Award would look beyond a person’s works to consider his/her professionalism and conduct and the impacts of that on the journalism profession in the region.
Announcing the Awards Committee which has as its chairperson, a veteran journalist and former Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps of Ghana, Rev. Ruby Amable with Mathias Tibu, formerly of Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Maria Kwami Gwira, a media trainer and consultant, Nana Baffour Gyem-Darkwa of the Public Affairs Unit of UHAS, Kobla Ali Kukubor, formerly of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and Gerald Agama, formerly of Ghana News Agency, the chairman touted the team as a strong one and expected the best from them.
He called on members to submit good works as entries for the competitive categories noting, “all entries will be thoroughly vetted by the Committee and winners determined through cumulative scores for the various categories” while “appealing to individuals and corporate institutions to come on board and invest in the media by way of sponsorships.”
Awards Committee Chairperson, Rev. Ruby Amable who made a little change to a popular saying to arrive at “the best really comes from the east (Volta)” assured of the Committee’s readiness to diligently work to come out with the best for the region.
Rev. Amable who declared nominations open from Monday, August 26 to Friday, September 27, 2019 for practitioners based in Volta/Oti Region, invited entries on published works from November 1, 2018 to September 15, 2019 in Education, Health, Sanitation/Environment categories.
The others included Agriculture, Economics/Business, Disability, Sports, Tourism and Morning Show.
GJA-Volta in 2017, instituted and organised the first ever regional awards programme to recognise and reward outstanding media practitioners based in Volta/Oti Region working in the print, electronic and online media so as to motivate them to do better.
This year’s Awards which comes off at Volta Serene Hotel, Ho is on the theme, “Environmental Cleanliness: Media as Vanguards. Don’t drop that litter”.
