VRCC Grateful to UNFPA For Supporting The Region

The Volta Regional Coordinating council (VRCC) has acknowledged activities of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as it applauded them  for the great support they have offered the people of the Volta region in the past one year.

The UNFPA as part of their activities through the VRCC in the region assisted some young females to go into apprenticeship in areas including bakery, sewing, hairdressing, manicure and pedicure, decorations and among other trades.

The beneficiaries from different district across the region, who were present at the Government of Ghana/UNFPA Seventh Country Programme 2020 End of year review meeting, expressed gratitude to the UNFPA and the VRCC for the privilege given to them.

They said the various training they had as young ladies have helped them to be financially stable and also prevented them from being dependent on young boys for money in their various communities which in a long run push them to compromise sexually.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, thanked the UNFPA for their funding support and partnership with government in the campaign on improving sexual reproductive health, gender equality and a campaign against gender-based violence.

According to him, the review meeting offers such opportunity to access the benefits of interventions carried out by sub implementing partners during the 2020 program implementation.

He said the VRCC with the support of the UNFPA have been undertaking activities in the region in addressing the progress on child marriage and gender-Based violence particularly by empowering girls through livelihood skills training.

He said, the skills trainings are aimed at improving economic status of girls and reducing their vulnerability to gender-Based violence as well as its consequences including force marriage and cohabitation.

He commended sub-implementing partners and the development partners for their contribution to the development and growth of our region. “I wish to also commend the chiefs and people of the UNFPA operating districts for their continue willingness to host important interventions. They have shown commitment to national development”

“On behalf of the council, I wish to single out UNFPA for supporting agents and critical development interventions in the Volta and Oti regions since 2014. These interventions are aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality, promoting family planning, ending teenage pregnancy and domestic violence as well as promoting quality adolescent sexual and reproductive health” he added

Meanwhile, Madam Victoria Fato, A representative of the VRCC observed that, the role of the UNFPA, sub implementing agents and development partners are commendable and encourage them to continue their support to the region in the subsequent years.
