Some 19,513 persons have successfully been registered on Day One (Tuesday, June 30)  of the New voters registration exercise in the Volta region.

This was disclosed exclusively to Volta Online by the Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Selormey Dogbey Adukpo.

According to him, the day one of the 38-days nationwide exercise was generally peaceful in the region with no reported incident of equipment failure.

He said turnout was encouraging on the first day, and lauded the enthusiasm of eligible residents to participate in the exercise.

On the COVID-19 protocols, Mr. Dogbey said the EC has put in place adequate precautionary measures at the various registration centres and appealed to applicants to strictly adhere to them.

A Volta Online tour of some of the registration centres in Ho on the first day saw the presence of at least two health personnel at each centre, checking the temperature of applicants.

There was also hand washing stations available for use by applicants before joining the queues, observing the one metre social distancing rule. All registration officials and most of applications were seen in their nose masks.

This year’s registration is being done in phases using the cluster system and a cluster is an amalgamation of five registration centres.

Explaining system to Volta Online, the EC Regional director said the registration team will move across each of the five centres within a cluster, registering people within a stipulated six days interval.

A total of 409 registration clusters have been deployed across the 18 constituencies of the region, to register estimated 1.2million prospective voters for the December 2020 general elections.
