Nkwanta South Assembly Gets Tough on Communal Labour Defaulters

By: Benjamin Owusu | Voltaonlinegh |

The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly in the Oti Region has instituted punitive measures against residents who evade communal labor.

The punishment, according to the Municipal Development Planning Officer, Issac Agyapong would force inhabitants to show commitment whenever sanitation exercise was organised within the municipality.

He told Voltaonlinegh News in an interview that the sanitation exercise was part of the assembly and the government’s efforts to improve on environmental sanitation and eradicate filth in the country at large.

Over 26 shop owners and food sellers were invited to appear before the assembly committee on sanitation for failing to participate in a clean-up exercise organised by the assembly on Saturday at Nkwanta.

Deputy Sanitation Officer in the municipality, Patrick Gbafa said adequate publicity was given about the event but some recalcitrant shop owners and food sellers were seen operating their businesses and refused to participate in the exercise.

Mr. Gbafa said such people were therefore served with notice of offence by the assembly to explain why they absented themselves from the exercise and possibly arraigned before court.

Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, John Thasun urged the people in the municipality to take part in communal activities to rid the area of filth and noted defaulters would be punished.

Meanwhile, Assembly member for Nkwanta East Electoral Area, Robert Avedzi-Da, entreated his colleague assembly members to ensure strict enforcement of the sanitation bye-law in the municipality.
