The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, has been declared the winner of the presidential election held on Saturday, December 7.
According to the results announced by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs. Jean Mensah, which cover 267 out of 276 constituencies across 16 regions, Mr. Mahama has secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total votes cast.
His closest contender, Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), trails behind with 41.1% of the total votes cast.
The EC, chaired by Madam Jean Mensah, announced that the total valid votes cast stand at 11,191,422, with 239,109 votes rejected. The voter turnout has been recorded at 60.9%.
With only nine constituency results outstanding, the EC Chair announced that those results will have no impact on the overall outcome of the polls, hence declaring former President Mahama as President-Elect.
Results from the Parliamentary elections also saw the NDC sweeping almost a super-majority in the 276-seat house, in what many watchers believed was a protest vote against the outgoing NPP administration.
